Lopez, PA Posted on February 28, 2019 by Bob McGuireFebruary 28, 2019

Well, another week with up and down weather.  We had a couple inches of snow; then the temperature went up and melted some; then Saturday evening we had freezing rain which made everything tricky.  Then, warm and melting ice, which made it muddy.  One day it finally did get up to 43 degrees, which felt like a real heat wave.  The wind is the big issue; just doesn’t seem to quit.  I’m hoping Mother Nature is going to be good to us and give us Spring very soon.  Everyone is so ready for warm and sun and no cold, snow or rain.   Hope everyone is feeling well.  There is so much stuff going around that seems to hang on.  That’s why we need the warm weather.  Makes everyone feel so much better.

Happy 85th birthday to Ray Barber, whose birthday was Saturday.  His sister, Carole Kilgus, had a little party for him at Pam’s in Dushore.  Family and friends gathered to help him celebrate this special day.  Many more, Ray.

The 2019 Lopez mug is going to be ordered very soon.  If you don’t have one reserved and would like to do that, contact Bob at the info below.  This year’s mug will be the VFW Fire Hall that was right in town.  Please do this ASAP so you don’t miss out.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-9238.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited on Sunday afternoon with his parents and brother, Brian.  We had an early birthday for Jr..  Had a really nice time.  Happy Birthday to him on Tuesday, the 26th.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 19th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

HINT:  “Did you know that vinegar has been around for more than 10,000 years?  It has been used as a preservative, a condiment, a beverage, and during World War I to treat wounds.  So, use it for many things around the house.”    To get a pleasant aroma throughout the house, combine 1 cup of water and 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice — or any combination of spices — in a large microwave bowl and cook on high until it boils.  Cook for a minute or two.  Combining 6 whole cloves and a half of a lemon in a cup of water will also work.  Makes for a spicey smell around the house.

Happy Birthday wishes to Mcguire Martin, March 1st; Keene Vinetelli; 5th; and Bethany Dendler, 6th.  Have a nice day.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your day; you just might need to attach cinder blocks to your shoes so the wind doesn’t carry you away.  You can still get out and get some of the invigorating air.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Here is a photo of the tearing down of the old school house.  Memories of yesteryear.

As I’m sitting here Sunday evening typing my news, guess what??  It’s snowing again.  This weather has been so crazy with sun, wind, snow, rain, high and low temperatures.  Sure wish it would just warm up and stay.  Mother Nature just doesn’t want to listen.  One day it did get up to fifty degrees.  Kids will like the snow so they can get in some more sledding time.  The flu bug will never go away with all this going on.   And, then I heard more bad weather for later in the week with snow, mix, the whole shebang.

Congratulations to Jacob Williams, 2018 Sullivan County graduate, who made the Dean’s List at LIU Brooklyn School of Business, Public Administration and Information Sciences.  Jacob is the son of Marc Williams and Amy Burkholder, Lopez.

St. Vladimir’s has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

The first Civic meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, March 19th, at 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Mark your calendar.

The 4th weekend in March is the 50th annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Show.  Mark your calendar now.  Will be held at the Wysox Volunteer Fire Department Hall.  Lots of dealers with all kinds of rocks, minerals and fossils; mini mine for the kids; UV presentation by  UVBOB; cabachon making; geode cutting.  Check it out.  Something you might be interested in.

Hope you all had a nice Valentine’s Day.  Mardi Gras is coming on on March 5th, if you celebrate that Holiday.

Happy Birthday to Armond Spinosa, 22nd; Jacob Williams, 23rd; Bob McGuire, Jr. and Christopher Sneidar, both on the 26th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  I need some hints, so if you have any you’d like to share, please e-mail them to me at address below.

I guess Winterfest and the Chocolate & Wine Walk, held on Saturday, were a success.   Dushore Family Market also had a Grand Re-Opening.  Wish them lots of luck with this new venture.  With Andy Bo at the helm, they’ll do great!! We were out of town.

Guess that’s it from my snowy back yard.  Enjoy your week.  Never know what it’s going to do next, but you can still get out and get some of that fresh, cold air.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 12, 2019 by Bob McGuireFebruary 12, 2019

The weather last week was up and down with temperatures as low as 4 degrees and as high as 54 degrees.  Early  Monday, it was 28 degrees and got up to 54 degrees and stayed until late in the day.  Saturday it was down to 12 degrees and didn’t go up past 21 degrees all day.  Sunday morning it was 4 degrees early, with a good frost sparkling on all the tree branches.  Sure would be nice to warm up and stay warm.

Mother Nature wasn’t very nice with all the warm weather and rain.  Because of that, the Eagles Mere toboggan slide cannot be built this year.  That’s really too bad as it was a major fund raiser for the Fire Company and so many people came from all of the world to enjoy the slide.  Maybe next year.

Sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Mrs. Rose Garey who passed away on the 4th.  Services will be held later, at the convenience of the family.

Sympathy to family, relatives and friends of Mrs. Irene Huray who passed away on the 5th.  Viewing was on Monday, the 11th, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, Dushore.  Funeral was held at Noon at Saints Peter and Paul Chapel,Church Street, Lopez,  with burial in the Parish cemetery.

President’s Day weekend coming up so another Holiday.  Winterfest will be held, snow or now snow, at Camp Brule.  Lots of fun things going on, especially the popular Polar Bear plunger.  Details have been in the Sully the past two weeks.  Support the Kiwanis Club of Sullivan County.

Congratulations to Mark, Jr. and Tatiana Fenster on the birth of their baby girl, Sophia.  Mark is a sister to Beth Sneidar and they often visit Lopez.

You know, when you don’t have a dog and you have to clean up after someone else’s dog, it’s not a fun thing to do.  So, please, if you walk your dog, please clean up after it, or keep it in your own yard.  Have heard from numerous folks of this happening.

Happy Birthday wishes to Khloie Bahr, 19th; and Clair Johnson, II, 20th.  Hope you both have a nice day.

HINT:  For those of you bothered with asthma, it’s been proven that orange juice helps reduce the number of asthma attacks, if you drink quite a lot.  Or, increase your Vitamin C intake.  A study done shows improvement in lung function following the increased Vitamin C intake to help reduce  bronchospasms or bronchial constriction.   Increased Vitamin C is also good this time of year with the colds going around.   Guess you just have to try it and see if it works for you.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Hope you all have or had a very nice Valentine’s Day, depending on when you get your paper.  Always nice to spend time with loved ones on these special days.

Don’t think I have anything else to report.  Enjoy your week; won’t be too miserable, I don’t think.  Get out and enjoy the fresh, brisk air while you can.  May be some snow on the horizon, but I heard no big storms.  Let’s hope that’s right.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.  I need some new hints, so if you have any, please e-mail them to me.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 12, 2019 by Bob McGuireFebruary 12, 2019

We sure do have crazy weather.  Below zero a few days and with the wind chill, it was horrible.  Kids had a couple of days off school because of icy roads and frigid temperatures.  Was minus 7 degrees on Saturday and really cold and windy.  Sunday was a better day when, in the afternoon, the temperature went up to a “balmy” 46 degrees.  For us, that is “balmy”.  I heard the week is to be pretty quiet with temperatures in the 50’s and maybe a little rain.   Since Phil didn’t see his shadow, an early Spring is predicted.  Let’s see if that is true.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home here.  Just had a little snow removal to do.  The deer seem to know when they are home.  I guess they see the truck and know that corn will be out for them.  They enjoyed dinner at Colley Pub on Saturday evening.

Winterfest is fast approaching.  Will be Saturday, February 16th.  Will be held snow or no snow.  Lots of fun activities, especially the Polar Plunge.  Sully has lots of information in last week’s paper and I’m sure there will be more, or check it out on sckiwanis.com for more information.

Finally getting over our colds.  They just seem to hang on.  Hope you all aren’t bothered with colds or flu.  We went  to Forty Fort on Friday and visited Bob’s sister, Lola and Mike Mattie; and his niece, Georgia, Michael and Mcguire Martin.

Happy Birthday to Lisa Kellogg Williams, 13th; Tommy VanDyke and Krystal Vermiere, 14th; Haley Latch and Shawn Laird, 15th; and Allison Lowden and Tim Brown, 17th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all.  Hope you get to spend time with your loved ones and have a great day.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  ” Ginger capsules, ginger ale, ginger tea and ginger snap cookies are good for morning sickness, upset stomach and nausea”.   Did you know cherries are good for gout?   Skip the medication and eat some cherries.

That’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; seems like it’s to be half decent.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 4, 2019 by Bob McGuireFebruary 4, 2019

Up and down weather all last week.  Monday very windy and cold; Tuesday was MINUS 8 degrees; rain and sun on Wednesday; Thursday, Friday and Saturday was snow showers off and on.  Had some icy roads so schools were closed or delayed because of that.  Sunday we had snow showers off and on.  Monday was to be a really nice day with sunshine, but cold.  I heard we could get 4-8 inches of snow Tuesday night into Wednesday morning??  Did it happen?  An arctic blast is supposed to hit us also.  Just think….”SPRING” is just around the corner.  I bet the snow birds who left Sullivan County are glad they are enjoying the nice weather in Florida.  It’ll get better; just hang in there.

Sympathy from the community to family, relatives and friends of Ed Walton who passed away on Sunday.  The family has a cabin at Lesterville.  I always enjoyed visiting with him and Kay on Old Home Day.  He loved it up here and spent a lot of time at the cabin when he could.  He gave many donations to the Civic Association for up-keep of Cold Spring.  He would always call and tell me of their anniversary and how many kids and grandkids there were.  Nice man; he will be missed.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Get well to any of you who have been bothered with colds or flu.  We’re just getting over miserable colds that were no fun.  Hope it passes you all by.

Winterfest at Camp Brule is coming up in February.  Watch the Sully for information on this.  Lots of activities of interest, including the famous Polar Bear plunge.

Mark your calendar for the fourth weekend in March for the 50th annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show.  This is our golden anniversary.  More information to come as it gets closer.

Happy Birthday to Kyra Vinetelli and Brian Dendler, February 1st; Tyler McGuire, 2nd (Ground Hog Day); Dee Whatley, 4th; Helen Amon, 5th; and Alex Aharonian, 11th.    Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT: ” Mix 1 TBSP of Dawn Dish Detergent; 1 TBSP rubbing alcohol and 1/2 Gallon of warm/hot water.  Pour over walkways and they won’t re-freeze.”  (Good one for this time of year.)

Had a nice phone call from Joe Caccia who wanted to know how things are in Lopez and checking up on friends.  He said it’s been cold in IL also and hoping for warmer weather.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Bundle up; it’s going to be COLD!!!   Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

As I sit here at the computer on Sunday evening, at 7 p.m., typing my news, it is a whopping 7 degrees and with the wind chill, must be way below zero.  That wind is just whipping around and sounds like a big truck outside.  It was 35 degrees early in the day, but then we had rain, then snow, so it all went downhill the rest of the day.  I heard Monday was to be the coldest with temperatures way below zero and bitter cold.  Warm up, maybe by Wednesday, but I did hear another storm coming Wednesday into Thursday.  Have to see what Mother Nature will bring us.  The neighbors did enjoy sledding on the hill across the street and had a pretty fast path going down the hill.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Wasn’t out much so don’t have a lot of news.  I think I did see T.J., Alison, and Jase Lowden,  along with Wesson, at their home on Church Street.  They are from Marlton, NJ. They visited with his his parents, Ted and Mary, on Maple Terrace.

Happy Birthday to Mike Stavisky, (Alex’s son), down there in sunny FL, 24th; Owen Evans and Scott Aharonian, 27; Jennifer Pequignot-Laird, 28th; and Lisa and Jason Burke, 30th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Had a nice phone conversation with Alice Fedorchak the other day.  She seems to be doing well in Montoursville, but does miss her friends here.  She always tells me to say HI to everyone, so I’m doing that.

HINT:  ” Research has discovered that sucking on zinc lozenges can reduce cold symptoms because the zinc attacks the cold virus living in the throat.”  (This is good to know at this time of year with so many being bothered with colds).

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; it’s gonna be bitter COLD and very windy.  Maybe just stay inside and look out the window.  If you do go out, bundle up so you don’t get hit with frostbite.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading.  Keep sending the hints.  I’m starting to run short.  I’ll be here next time.

Weather has been so screwy lately.  Cold, very windy, cloudy and sometimes some sun.  I guess that’s winter.  No snow to speak of so far, which is good as far as I’m concerned.  We had a light dusting on Sunday morning.

Sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Barbara (Neufer) Harvey who passed away on January 2nd.  A memorial gathering to celebrate her life was held on the 7th at Fiore Funeral Home in Bangor.  Interment will be at a later day, at the convenience of the family, at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Cemetery in Lopez.  Barbara was a big help with her Church here and could always been seen Old Home Day helping with their food stand.

Sympathy from the community to the family of John Borick who passed away on the 11th.  Funeral was held on Thursday at St. Vladimir’s Church with burial at St. Vladimir’s Cemetery.  John was a big part of Lopez  and did so much for the community and his Church.  He spent a lot of time here when he wasn’t in NJ.

Keep a watch on the Sully for things that will be coming up that may be of interest to you.  Always something to keep one entertained.

Good luck to the Sneidar families as they now have Colley Pub open.  Check it out on Face Book.  Have heard some very good comments.

St. Vladirmir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday to Alice Fedorchak and Jim Rouse, 21st; Irene Pequignot; 22nd.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Alex and Ginny Stavisky, 22nd; and Al and Jeannie Kapler, 23rd.  Congrats and many more.

HINT:  Found out a good tip over the weekend.  Did you know if you put your flour, pasta, oatmeal and other things in the freezer for a couple weeks, it will kill anything in it.  Then you can put it in your pantry or containers.   Most anything can be kept in the freezer.  Thanks, Renie, for this tip and I’m going to do that.

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week; seems like it’s going to be pretty quiet for the most part.  Something may be coming Thursday night into Friday, but a little early to tell yet.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238, mail me, see me, or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on January 10, 2019 by Bob McGuireJanuary 10, 2019

We’ve had some crazy weather already in the six days of January.  Frosty, warm, rain, temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s.  Never know what the day would bring.  Friday the weather was warm enough to hang clothes out on the line…..and they dried.  Was frosty early in the morning, but warmed up nice for the afternoon with the sun helping.  We did have a couple of flurries on Sunday afternoon.  The big thing is that we’ve had wind non-stop for such a long time.  Of course Bob told my niece who lives in Arizona that we went the snow their way.  They had quite a bit and were even able to make a snowman.

Hope those of you who go by the Julian calendar and celebrated Orthodox Christmas over the weekend, had a Blessed day with family and loved ones.

There will still be some things going on in the County for your enjoyment.  I don’t think the Eagles Mere Toboggan slide will be running as they need twelve inches of good ice for this and we’ve not had that.  Unless it gets really frigid, I think it will have to wait until next yer.

The Kiwanis Annual Winterfest will be held at Camp Brule coming up in February, so keep an eye on the Sully for that. Their big attraction is the Polar Bear Plunge.  They do have lots of activities to take part in.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Did you know that taking a garlic and parsley capsule every day will lower your blood pressure.”

Happy Birthday to Craig Germany and John McDonald, Jr., 9th; Crystal Pequignot, 12th; and Adel Bradshaw, 20th.  Hope you all have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Ted and Linda Beaver, 12th; Ted and Mary Lowden, 17th.  Congratulations and have a nice day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Tyler Higley as he celebrates on the 13th.  Have a good one.

If you’d like to become a member of the Lopez Civic Association or pay your dues, please see Heather McDonald.  New members always welcome.

I think that’s it for this time around.  Enjoy your week; may need the umbrella, if it’s not too windy, to keep the rain away.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and keep sending those hints.  I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 26, 2018 by Bob McGuireDecember 26, 2018

Well, here we are almost at the end of the year.  We’ve had some up and down weather for the week. We had some rain, some sun, clouds and cold weather. Heavy rain on Saturday and drizzle on Sunday that turned to light snow.  I’ve been watching about a dozen turkeys graze in the cemetery and the lot across the street.  Don’t see many deer at all.  Don’t see many hunters around since the season has closed.  Hope everyone got the deer they wanted.

Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited us on Saturday and had a good time here.  He got his Senior picture taken by his Pop Pop.  Hardly seems possible he’ll be graduating in 2019.   Always nice to see him.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes to V Rev Mother Christophora and Christian Santarelli, both on the 19th; Alyssa Pequignot, 20th; Kaeleigh McDonand and Lillie Ann Bahr, 23rd; and Ginny Stavisky, 31st.  Hope you all have a super day.

Happy Anniversary to Anthony and Bethany Sneidar who celebrate 3 years on the 28th.  They and their two little boys are now residents of Lopez, on Church Street, in the family home.  They are super excited to be living here.  They have also purchased the Colley Pub, along with his Dad and Mom, Tony and Patti.  Good luck to all of them in this new adventure.

Have you paid your 2019 Civic Association dues?   See Heather McDonald.

HINT:  ” Cold remedy:  To hot tomato juice, add the juice of one or two cloves of garlic, the juice of half a lemon, and about 1/16th  teaspoon of cayenne pepper.  Drink!!  The results are amazing and sure to fight off any cold with force and speed.”  (With that combination it should.)

The Civic Association still has a few retro hoodies and t-shirts available.  If interested, contact me at the information below.  Make nice Christmas gifts.

This is the last Sullivan Review until after the New Year.  I want to thank all of you for reading my column and any comments that came my way.  Hints are also welcome.

Guess that’s it for this year.  I wish all of you, including the great Sully staff, a Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year.  Hope that it’s good for everyone.  Have news, you can still call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  I’ll be back for the January 3, 2019 issue.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

I think winter weather is here.  The week was up and down with temperatures, frost, flurries, sun and clouds.  One day it did manage to get up to 45 degrees.  The weekend wasn’t too bad for Santa as he stopped by Lopez to visit with the kids.  The Civic Association would like to thank Theresa, Maddie, Macrina, Irena and Julianna Pochatko, Gloria Weisbrod, Carole Kilgus, Pat Arcaro and Linda Patson for the great job they did putting this event together.  Also, to anyone who donated snacks, sandwiches and drinks.  The kids enjoyed games, coloring and singing while waiting for Santa.  The Pochatko girls did an amazing job with that.  The kids enjoyed their gifts from Santa before he went on his way to the next stop.  Thank you everyone and see you next year.

Congratulations to Kyler Burke and Aaron Kinsey as they made Distinguished Honor Roll.

HINT:  “To get a pleasant aroma throughout the house, combine one cup of water and 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice — or any combination of spices to your taste — in a large microwave-safe bowl and cook on high until it boils.  When it reaches that point, cook for a minute or two.  When cooled, remove from microwave and you’ll have a nice smell.  Or, you can combine 6 whole cloves and a half lemon in a cup of water and microwave for a couple of minutes.  Will make the house smell yummy.”  (Family will think you are baking something good to eat.)

Bob and JoAnn McGuire enjoyed their mineral club Christmas Party held on Sunday at Villa Senna in Towanda.  Great time to get together and visit for all.

Happy Birthday wishes to Dylan Amon, 13th; Noah Brown, 14th; Carter Vermiere, 17th; and Rev Mother Christophora and Christian Santarelli, both on the 19th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Hardly seems possible that December is going by so fast.  Take a look, as you travel, at all the Christmas decorations and what folks have done to bring the spirit of Christmas to all.

Hope those of you who went hunting were successful in getting your deer.

Don’t forget to see Heather McDonald before the end of December to renew your membership in the Civic Association or to become a member.  Just a buck for either Regular or Associate membership.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Last I heard NO storms on the horizon and just to be cold, so that sounds good.  I did hear from my niece in Richmond, VA, that it had been snowing all day Sunday and wasn’t stopping.  We can be glad it missed us…….this time.  North Carolina was in the same situation.  They had 10 inches and still coming down.  Many places had no power and trees and wires down.   This year the weather has been so unpredictable.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 7, 2018 by Bob McGuireDecember 7, 2018

The weather has been a bit better lately.  We had some clouds and some sun on Thursday.  The weekend wasn’t too bad, but did have rain.  The snow has almost melted from the grass.  Sunday it did manage to get up to 54 degree with a misty rain.  I heard the week is to be storm free, but cold.  I’ll take that.

Thanks to Clair Johnson, Heather, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald and Bob and JoAnn McGuire for doing the decorating at the Monument and the Pavilion on Saturday.  Mother Nature was kind to us.  The day was not rainy, snowy, cold,  or windy and we got done pretty fast.   Hope you enjoy it as much as we did getting it ready for the Christmas and New Year Holiday.  Will be left on until after Orthodox Christmas.

There are a lot of decorations around town and around the County for all to enjoy.

Civic dues are due by the end of December for the new year.  To pay yours, or become a member, see Heather McDonald.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Thanks to Bob McGuire for making the frame and wire covers for our Lopez sign.  Now the wind doesn’t blow our letters all over town.   Looks good.

Congratulations to Dustin and Gaige Burke who were lucky hunters.  Good luck to the rest of you who are out there trying to get your deer.

No Civic meetings until March 2019.

Happy Birthday wishes to Elexus Dunkleberger, 6th; Tony Sneider, Jr. and Robyn McCobin, both on the 8th; Andrea (Matychak) Anderson and Irena Pochatko, both on the 12th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Before you store a cooler after summer use, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda into it and stuff with crumpled newspapers to prevent a musty smell.  Try to store with the lid open to allow air to circulate.  When ready to use again, dump the baking soda into the sink drain.  Run water and the drain will be refreshed.”

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; should be quite nice, I hope.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Tis the Christmas season

The snow covered everything in a layer of fluffy white.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 2, 2018 by Bob McGuireDecember 2, 2018

Hope you all have an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday with loved ones.  We had some pretty cold temperatures during the week.  Was only 17 degrees on Wednesday; 6 degrees on Thursday and 0 degrees on Friday.  Saturday we had pouring down nasty rain.  Sunday was foggy and cloudy but sneaked up to 48 degrees.  The week isn’t to be too bad.  Last I heard, it’s rain most of the time with a cold front coming through on Thursday.  The hunters will be out to bag their buck.  Good luck to all.   With all the rain and no snow, it will be a little harder to track the deer, but I’m sure there will be lots of lucky hunters.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent some time over Thanksgiving with her daughter, Irene Pequignot and family in Linden.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, spent a few days over the holiday at their home on Church Street.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire, along with Bob Jr. and Tyler, Hunlock Creek, had Thanksgiving on Saturday with Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski on Main Street.  Lots of good food, fun and visiting.   Jr. and Tyler were back on Sunday to help Brian with a project he was working on.

Tent City is occupied by some of the Borick clan that are here to try their luck getting a deer.  Hope they have good luck.

I saw lights on at cabins around town.  Many hunters will be around for the next few days for the hunting season.

Our Lopez bridge is done.  Check out the Lopez website at lopezpa.com and see the progress and the finished bridge.

Civic dues for 2019 are due.  Please see Heather McDonald to pay yours.

Saturday, December 1st, there will be Christmas decorating at the Pavilion and monument, at 10 a.m.  Any volunteers who would like to help, please come.  Many hands make light work and we’ll be done in a flash.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

I think that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; should be half decent.  Have news call me at 928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 21, 2018 by Bob McGuireNovember 26, 2018

Well, we had our first winter storm and Mother Nature was really cruel to us.  She dumped 10.6 inches of snow Thursday into Friday.  School got out early Thursday and was cancelled on Friday.   It did warm up some on Friday afternoon and Saturday so some of the snow melted, but there is still a lot in the fields.  The neighbor girls had a pretty fast sledding track on the hill and liked riding down.  Haven’t seen the weather report for the week, but someone said cold, but dry.  Hope so.  Another report I heard is very cold winter with LOTS of snow.  That can’t be right.

St. Vladimir’s Church Ethnic Foods dinner will be on Sunday, the 25th, Noon to 5 p.m. at the Social Hall.  Eat in or take out.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek,  enjoyed visiting on Saturday with his parents, Bob and JoAnn McGuire.  They brought lunch and we all had a good time.

The last Civic meeting for the year was held on Tuesday.  Will convene again in March.  Membership dues are now due.  See Heather McDonald to pay yours.  New members welcome.

On Saturday, November 10th, the Neufer family — 60 strong — gathered at St. Vladimir’s Hall to celebrate an Old Home Day Redo!  A key member of the family, Barbara Harvey, wasn’t able to attend the traditional Old Home Day in August, so in honor of her birthday, we decided a redo was in order!  From our traditional weenie roast and pinata to way more food then could ever be eaten, a great day was had by all.  Family came from as far as Pittsburgh, just for the day!

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-1099.

I guess deer season is coming up after Thanksgiving.  Good luck hunters.  Bear hunting is also in there somewhere so hope you bag the big one.

Happy Birthday to Serenity Laird and Reese Baton, 23rd; Cassidy Brown, 30th.  Have a good day.

Hardly seems possible that the month is almost gone and we’ll be into December and Christmas.  Seems like we just had Halloween.

That’s it for this time.  Enjoy your week.  Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.  Give thanks to those who can’t be home because they are fighting to keep us free.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Our new Main street bridge is done.  Thank you bridge crew for a job well done.

Had a nice few days and many days of rain, wind, cold and some snow flurries. Lots of early morning frosts.   It did get up to fifty degrees a couple of days.  Weather is changing and I think winter will be here to stay.  Looks like cold weather most of the week with some snow on the way.  Guess we just have to take it and hope it doesn’t get too bad.  There are reports of a cold winter; lots of snow; not much snow.  We just have to wait and see.  The birds are sure enjoying the bird feed and suet feeder.

Are you bothered with SAD?  What is SAD, you ask.  Well, I’ll tell you.  It’s Seasonal Affective Disorder and the Mayo Clinic describes it as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning in the fall and continues into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody.  Make daylight hours count and hope you all get through the winter with no problems.

The last Civic meeting will be held on Tuesday, the 20th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Membership dues are now due for 2019.  To pay yours, or become a member, see Heather McDonald.

Don’t forget.  This is the last weekend for the New Albany Fire Department play.   A Fractured Sequel will run on Friday and Saturday, the 16th and 17th, at 7 p.m., New Albany Social Hall.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent the weekend at their home here.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.  They also have the Ethnic Foods Dinner coming up on Sunday, the 25th at the Hall.  Eat in or take out.

If there is anyone who was around for the 1976 Lopez Centennial celebrations and has any movies of the activities, please contact Bob at the Information below.

We have our new bridge in town.  It’s all finished and is quite nice.  Check out the progress on lopezpa.com.  Should last for many years.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire enjoyed Saturday visiting Bob, Jr. and Tyler in Hunlock Creek.

Happy Birthday wishes to Alek Laird and Mike McDonald, 19th; and Jaeden Patson, 20th.  Hope you have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to TJ and Alison Lowden as they celebrate  on the 17th.  Congratulations and have a good day.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; might have to bundle up to keep out the cold.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 7, 2018 by Bob McGuireNovember 7, 2018

Had some nicer weather during the week with lots of sun and warm days.  On Tuesday it went up to 54 degrees; Thursday was 54 degrees and Friday it hit 60 degrees.  We did have some miserable rain and wind a few times too.  I think we’ve had enough rain for this summer and next.  There were frosty mornings also.  How many forgot to turn your clocks back one hour Sunday morning.  Sure don’t like it getting dark so early now.

The rain held off for the Halloween party at the Pavilion on Wednesday.  Thanks to Brian and Nina for chairing this event.  Quite a few kids, along with parents, showed up.  There was cookies, punch and hot chocolate to enjoy and the “goodie” bags were filled to capacity this year.  Thank you to all who donated to make the evening a good time.  The judges were Tim and Lori Higley and Roda Stasiak.  They had a difficult time to pick the winners as there were some really good ones.  However, here are the winners:  0-3 —  Prettiest, Haley Mensch; Funniest, Axl Baton; Scariest, Emerson Brumwell.  4-7 —  Prettiest, Tessa Chapman; Most Original, Odin Setzer; Scariest, Xander Kapler.  8-11 — Prettiest, Kaeleigh McDonald; Funniest, Sara Silfie; Scariest, Dylan Silfie.  12 and up —  Prettiest, Elizabeth Kapler; Funniest, Brandy O’Conner; Scariest, Cheyenne Richlin.   After judging was done, Brian McGuire had his hay filled trailer ready, decorated with all kinds of Halloween spooky things and lots of lights.  Everyone boarded and he took them around town to those who had their porch light on and they were given a treat.  Back to the Pavilion for last minute cookies and punch and on home.  Everyone had a really good time and look forward to next year.

DJ Fitzgerald stopped over on Thursday evening to visit and have a cold “brewsky” with Brian McGuire.  Always a good time

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Don’t forget this Saturday and Sunday is the New Albany Volunteer Fire Company play.  Saturday is at 7 p.m. and Sunday is a 2 p.m. matinee.  Looks like another good one, titled “A Fractured Sequel” this year.  Get out and enjoy.  They do a great job with these plays and it’s a good way to support the Fire Company.   November 16th and 17th is the next round.  Those start at 7 p.m.

St. Vladimir’s Church will have their Ethnic Foods dinner on Sunday, November 25th at the Social Hall.  Time is Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or take out.  Nice to support the Church, so go and have an enjoyable meal.

Irene Pequignot spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Irene Huray, after spending some time on Saturday visiting with Mick and Lola Mattie in Forty Fort.  Good time and lots of catching up with these cousins.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire enjoyed lunch on Saturday at Bo Brothers in Wyoming with a few of his class mates and talked about planning a reunion next year in May.

Did you make it to the polls and vote?  Sure hope so.  It’s your right to do so.

Happy Birthday wishes to Brian McGuire, 11th; Mr. Ferdie Marek, 12th; Aiden Sperry, 13th; Monica Black, 16th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to V Rev Gary and Georgette Matychak as they celebrate on the 10th.  Have a great day.

Bridge is looking good.  It’s almost done.  The sidewalks are done; it’s now two lanes and there’s just a little cosmetic things to finish up on.  Great job to those guys for their diligence and hard work.  I know it’s their job, but they had some really bad weather when they couldn’t work and then worked harder to get things done on time.  Check the Lopez web site to see pictures of the progress.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week.  Might be rainy, but will be warm, so take an umbrella when you go out.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 1, 2018 by Bob McGuireNovember 1, 2018

Guess our winter is on the way.  Mother Nature can’t make up her
mind.  Thursday was cold and windy.  We had rain and more rain all day
Saturday, along with cold and wind.  Only got up to 38 degrees.
Sunday was a little better with sun for a while.  Then, the clouds
took over and it got windy and light rain in the afternoon.  Did get
up to 45 degrees.  From the report this Sunday evening, I hear the
week is to be a little better, but more rain, but temperatures in the
50’s, if you can believe that.  Would be nice to have more warm
weather before winter really does set in, but we have no control over
that.

FLASH!!!  Don’t forget, Sunday, November 4th, turn your clocks
BEHIND ONE HOUR.

Mark you calendar for Sunday the 25th of November, Noon to 5 p.m. when
they will have their ethnic foods dinner.  Eat in or take out.  More
info, call the above number.

St. Vladimir’s Church haspierogies for sale.  To order, call
570-928-1099.

Also, don’t forget on November 10, 11, 16 and 17 the New Albany
Volunteer Fire Company will have their play.  Matinee on Sunday at 2
p.m. on the 11th.  Otherwise, they start at 7 p.m.  It’s called “A
Fractured Sequel”.   Hope you can go and support the local Fire
Company.

Wasn’t out and about a lot this week…..too darn cold, windy,
and rainy.  Geez!  What will I do when winter comes?  Hibernate, I
guess.

I’m sure there are other things going on around the County, so
keep an eye on the Sully for those.

Spending the weekend with Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski were
Victoria and Brock from Quakertown. They had a good time at the
Mildred Halloween party.  Brock won funniest and Brian won scariest.
They also liked chillin’ while they were here.

In appreciation for theirdiligence and hard work in getting the
bridge done on Main Street, theLopez Civic Association treated the
workers to coffee and donuts on Thursday, at the Pavilion.  They
worked in a lot of bad weather.  They had delays and they worked when
the creek was high from the flooding.  The work should be done soon
and looks really good.  To see photos of the progress, go to
www.lopezpa.com. Good job, guys.

With the colder weather hereor on the way, the Lopez Civic
Association does have a few hoodies and regular sweat shirts for sale.
If interested, contact me at the information below and I’ll see if I
have what you may need.  They also make nice Christmas gifts.

Happy Birthday wishes to Tim Bullis, November 5th; Devon DeSanto
and Tai Iwancio, 6th; Terry Bullis, 7th; Grayson Burke (3), 8th.  Hope
you all have a nice day.

The frost sure has been on the pumpkins and the flowers have all
died.  Leaves are gone and no color at all this year.  Just wasn’t
nice looking, I guess because of so much rain.  Next year, maybe.

HINT:  “After you remove the flower ends of broccoli, slice the
stems thinly and toss them into a green salad or add them to stir-fry
veggies for extra crunch and food value.  You can also peel the stalks
and cube them for stir-fry dishes.”
“A clean cottage cheese container can be recycled for storing chopped onions.”

I guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, whether nice or not.
Just get out and get some fresh air.  Just take an umbrella in case
you might need it.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see
me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks
for reading and I’ll be here next time.

The bridge is coming along and the fantastic five were invited to a coffee and donut party by the Lopez Civic Association to show their appreciation.

The five were Max,  Fuzzy,  Justin,  Jared,  and Dawson.  Thanks guys.

I guess winter must be here or coming.  The week’s weather was up
and down.  Four days of frost; nice, sunny, warm days; Saturday rainy
and cold; Sunday very cold and windy but sunny.  Someone mentioned
snow flurries, but I haven’t seen any yet.  I would be happy not to
see any for the whole winter.   Don’t really look forward to what is
coming, but I guess Mother Nature has things in store for us.  Our
leaves and color are gone for this year.  Wasn’t very colorful this
time due to all the rain we had.  Hopefully, next year will be much
prettier.

Don’t forget.  November 10, 11, 16 and 17, New Albany Volunteer
Fire Department will have their annual play.  Watch social media for
more information.

November 25th, Noon to 5 p.m. St. Vladimir’s Church will have
their Ethnic Foods dinner.  Eat in or take out.    Mark your calendar

you might be interested in.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent some time at her daughter’s, Irene
Pequignot, in Linden.  The family all got together for a birthday
party in her honor while she was there.

Halloween is on the horizon.  Got your costume ready?  Civic

Pavilion.  Treats and prizes.  Trick or Treating will be after the party.

Wow!!  Frost was on the pumpkins on Sunday morning.  Saturday was
a cold day too.  Sun was out on Sunday, off and on, but there was a
cold breeze.  The leaves are all off the trees and the hills are drab
looking.  I heard we are to get some nice weather later in the week
and I hope that’s true.  Listening to TV just now on Sunday evening,
they are saying rain for Tuesday and cold the rest of the week.  Don’t
like that report at all.  We need more warm weather.  We had hardly
any summer.  But………Mother Nature does what Mother Nature does.

I got an e-mail from Doug Weaver voicing his opinion on some
comments I’ve made in my news about archery hunters.  I do agree with
him “that a majority of the archery hunters, both “he” and “she” are
ethical, safe and promote wildlife conservation objectives”.  I
apologize to Doug, his hunter friends, and any others I may have
offended.  I do take comments seriously and I thank him for his
e-mail.  Good luck hunters.

Mark you calendar so you can attend the New Albany Volunteer Fire
Department  play this year.  It will be held on November 10, 11, 16
and 17.  Plays start at 7 p.m. except for the 11th, which will be at 2
p.m.  This years’ title is “A Fractured Sequel” and will focus on “The
Love Boat”; Charlie’s Angels; Cheers; LaVerne and Shirley; Married,
With Children; The Beverly Hillbillies; and “The Golden Girls”.  Watch
social media for more information.   Hope you can support the local
Fire Company.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call

There are probably other activities that will be coming up, so
keep your eye on the Sully for those you might be interested in.

Happy Birthday wishes to Ted Hubiak 20th; Aine Lee McDonald,
21st;  and Maddie Pochatko, 24th.  Have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Kevin and Terry Bullis, 20th; and Bruce and
Helen Amon, 24th.  Congratulations and have a great day.

Don’t forget that Election Day will soon be here.  Get out and
vote.  Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th.  Mark your calendar now
so you won’t forget.

Get your Halloween costume ready and come to the Civic
Association party on the  31st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Treats and
prizes.  Hope to see you there.

St. Vladimir’s Church will have their Ethnic Foods dinner on
Sunday, the 25th of November from Noon to 5 p.m.  You can eat in or
take out.  Have questions, call 570-928-1099.   Mark your calendar and
support the local Church and have a good meal.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever the
weather is.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me or

Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend.  Weather wasn’t bad at
all.  Saturday and Sunday were really nice after a cool start.  The
week is to be pretty warm and good also.  The leaves are changing and
slowly falling off the trees.  Little early but with all the rain, I
guess that didn’t help.  I haven’t seen geese going South yet, but
probably soon.

Bill and Linda Pfeiffer, Hughesville, visited Bob and JoAnn
McGuire on Sunday.  Pleasant time for all and was so nice to see them.
The peanut butter fudge she made and brought is delicious.

Halloween is on the horizon.  Got you costume ready?  Civic
Association will have their annual Halloween party on the 31st, 6 p.m.
at the Pavilion.  Treats and prizes.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 16th, 6 p.m. probably
at the Township Building.

Darway is planning a Fall Festival on Oct 20th from 1:00-5:00.
This will include face painting, a clown, pumpkin painting, games,
small animals, “Trunk or Treating” starting @ 4:00.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire visited his family in Forty Fort on Sunday.
This included Lola and Mike Mattie; Georgia, Michael and Mcguire
Martin.  Got some Halloween decorations done and had a good time while
there.

Happy Birthday wishes to Brad Hubiak and Bob Burke, 14th; Josh
Anderson and Ken Smith, 17th; and Marie Cikovic, 19th.  Have a nice
day.

Happy Anniversary to Ted and Fay Puzo as they celebrate on the 14th.
Have a nice day.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever your
plans.  Get out and take a look at all the neat Fall and Halloween
decorations.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me or

What a perfect weekend for outside work and things going on.  Sunday was really nice, after a brief shower.  There were lots of four-wheelers taking advantage of the weather by getting in a nice ride.   May get some rain this week but last I heard, next week is to be quite warm again.  Maybe we’ll get Indian summer.  Looks nice to look out the window and see the sun out.  Geese should be moving soon.  The birds are at the feeder like they haven’t eaten in days.

It is archery season now, so those of you who don’t hunt, it would be a good time to stay away from the woods.  Sometimes a hunter just does not pay attention and will shoot before he realizes it’s not a deer.   Good luck hunters.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 57-928-1099.

Sympathy from the community to family, relatives and friends of Marie Sysock who recently passed away in California.  She and her family were long time residents of Lopez, before moving out there.  Very nice lady and will be missed.

Happy Birthday wishes to Gwen Hontz and Dylon Pequignot, , 7th; Irene Huray and Leah Elizabeth Risser, and Ryan Weisbrod, 8th; Sally Houseknecht, 12th; and Tom Iwancio and Mickey Bednar, 13th.  Hope you all have a nice day of celebration.

Had a call from Barbara Craig.  She and her husband, Jim, now live in Florida, but she says she misses Lopez and to tell all her friends Hello and she’s thinking of them.  She said “it’s a balmy 85 degrees here and we’re loving it”.

HINT:  “A safe, effective way to repel insects from your houseplants, including aphids, spider mites and mealy bugs. Put a drop of Dawn Dish washing Liquid in a spray bottle, fill the rest of the bottle with water, shake well, and mist your household plants with the soapy water.”

Still no work being done on the bridge in town.  Maybe the place where the pieces are being made got flooded from that last Hurricane.  Hopefully, we see some progress soon.

Hardly seems possible that October is here and Halloween is on the horizon.  Time to start thinking of your costume and come to the party at the Pavilion on Halloween, the 31st, 6 p.m.  Still seeing Fall and Halloween decorations out.

Guess that’s it from here.  Enjoy your week; probably won’t have many more of the better weather.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for your.

Well, we had weather and then we had weather.  Some days were good; some were not so good.  The weekend was cold, damp and windy.  Almost a frost on the pumpkins on Sunday, but stayed above freezing.  We still need some nice, warm, sunny days before the cold comes and stays.  Some leaves are turning and some look pretty drab.  Don’t look forward to what may be coming later.  We hardly had summer, but maybe we’ll get Indian summer, which would be nice.

TJ, Alison, and Jase Lowden, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, spent the weekend at their home on Church Street and visited his parents, Ted and Mary, on Maple Terrace.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, October 16th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building since it will probably be too cold at the Pavilion.   Membership dues are now due.  See Heather McDonald to pay yours for 2019.  Still just a buck.  Looking for new members to join and help out in the community.

It’s nice to see the two signs that say “watch children” and “children at play” on Main Street and Church Street.  Lets hope that drivers will see the signs and slow down.  If you’re in such a hurry to get some place, leave earlier and take it easy.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, was in for a few days at her home here.

St Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Halloween and Fall decorations are starting to appear.  The colors of the pumpkins, wreaths and Fall flowers really look so nice.  I imagine the geese will be traveling to warmer weather soon.

There are October activities coming up so watch the Sully for these.

HINT:  ” Did you know you can use Alka Seltzer to soothe insect bites?  Dissolve two tablets in a glass of water.  Use a cloth or cotton ball to apply it to the affected area.  The red will go down and the itchiness will vanish in about fifteen minutes.”

Happy Birthday to Elizabeth Kapler, October 1st; Joe Fanning, 2nd.  Have a good day.

Special birthday wishes to my little friend, Kyleigh McDonald, who celebrates her 9th on the 2nd.  Have a super, duper day.

Happy Anniversary to Tony and Donna (Lansberry) Cikovic as they celebrate on the 2nd.  Have a great day.

Still waiting on things to be delivered to work on the bridge.  It was coming along really well until the mistake was made so that’s holding things up for quite some time now.

Bob and I visited our son and grandson, Jr. and Tyler in Hunlock Creek on Thursday.  Then went on to Forty Fort to visit his sister and family and did some shopping.

Guess that does it for this time.  Enjoy your week.  Maybe it will warm up, but the brisk air does a person good too.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on September 19, 2018 by Bob McGuireOctober 29, 2018

Had some nice weather and some not so nice.  Almost all week it showered off and on.  Saturday and Sunday turned out really good days.  Bowhunters Festival was on the weekend, so they did have a couple of nice days.  Now, we’re to get rain from Florence on Monday into Tuesday , with 2-4 inches possible, along with flooding again.  Don’t need it.

Sympathy from the community on the passing of Monty Gulich on Thursday, the 13th.  You couldn’t ask for a more pleasant man.  Always joking and had a nice word to say about anyone.  He will be missed. Burial Service was held on Tuesday, September 18th, at St. Vladimir’s Church, Lopez, with the Rev. Dennis Hendershot, his pastor presiding.  Interment was in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez.

“What’s going on with the bridge work?” you ask.  Well, it’s on hold right now and nothing is being done.  Seems that something was made wrong and has to be re-done.  This was about 3 weeks ago and still nothing.  Hopefully, soon or they won’t be done by the date planned.

October coming up soon and things will still be going on in the County so keep an eye on the Sully to see what, where and when.

Happy Birthday to Bob Day, 23rd; Annaliese Froese and Jon-Paul Matychak, 25th; Ted Beaver and “Dinky” Burke, 27th; and Kurt Schroeder, 29th.  Have a good day.

B’s gang send birthday wishes to Tommy Finan as his special day is the 25th.  Have a good one.

Happy Anniversary Chris and Michele Craig as they celebrate on the 27th; and to Dustin and Sam Burke on the 28th.  Congratulations and many more.

HINT:  “If you spray WD-40 on the distributor cap, it will displace the moisture and allow the car to start.”  “Keep a can of WD-40 in your kitchen cabinet.  It is good for oven burns and any other type of burn.  It takes the burned feeling away and heals with no scarring.  Remember, the basic ingredient is fish oil.”  (Never know this but I don’t think I’d try it anyway.)

Get well wishes to Ted Lowden who spent the weekend in the hospital having his gall bladder removed.  He’s on the road to recovery and hope he continues to improve.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you might do.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on September 15, 2018 by Bob McGuireSeptember 15, 2018

What a cold, nasty weekend it was.  There was a cold, windy rain.  It could cool down slowly, not so fast all at once.  From what I’ve heard, we’re to get rain during the week from the storms down South.  Too bad it couldn’t go to CA where they desperately need the rain for the wild fires.  I did hear it’s supposed to warm up, but don’t know when exactly.   Kids still liked to ride their scooters even if it was slightly raining.

Tom Beck and his grandson, Trey Beck, both from Sunbury, visited with us on Saturday afternoon.  They were in the area so stopped by.  Was a nice time.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 18th, 6 p.m., weather permitting.  If it’s too nasty, will be held in the Township Building.

The Bow Hunter’s Festival is coming up on the 14th, 15th and 16th.  Will be at the Forksville Fairgrounds and always draws a lot a people from all over to take part.  Fun for adults as well as the kids.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it will be nice for that weekend.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent some time at their home here.  Always some yard work to do while they’re here.

I hope you all took a moment to say a prayer and remember those who lost their lives on 9-11.

Happy Birthday wishes to JoAnn McDonald and Carmela Walosin, 19th; Mya Evans, 20th; and Roland Dayton, 21st.   Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Scott and Susan Aharonian, 14th; Ed and Kay Walton, 16th.

HINT:   “Kids get into the darnedest things!  Like Vaseline and baby oil rubbed into their hair?  Dawn is mild enough to use on their hair and strong enough to remove the most stubborn grease.”   “Partially fill a strong zip-type sandwich bag with Dawn dishwashing liquid, close and freeze. The liquid soap stays cold much longer and it can be re-frozen many times. It will conform to the place you need an ice pack.”

Can’t think of anything else.  Enjoy your week; before long it will really be cold and you know what else.  I won’t mention that word.  Tooooo early for that yet.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on September 9, 2018 by Bob McGuireSeptember 9, 2018

Have been having some nice weather after a couple of rain showers during the week.  The Holiday weekend turned out quite nice for those having picnics and family get-togethers.  Hope you all had a splendid time.

The weather for the week is to be hot and humid with “spotty” showers here and there.  So, we may get some rain and we may not.  Temperatures are to be in the high 80’s and low 90’s.  Still pool time, quad and motorcycle riding yet to be done.  The gardens look to be about done, but the flower beds and hanging baskets still look pretty nice.  Next, it will be leaves changing and hearing geese going South, but I hope not too soon yet.  We’re still seeing geese in the cemetery here.

Sullivan County Fair is over  and I’m sure it was a success again this year.  If you went, I hope you had an enjoyable time.  There’s always lots to do at the Fair.

TJ, Allison and Jase Lowden, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, spent the weekend at their home on Church Street.  First time here with the baby.  They also visited Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 18th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Should still be warm enough.  (I hope.)

Bob and I, along with Bob Jr. and Tyler, Hunlock Creek, enjoyed a cook-out with Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski on Monday.

Happy Birthday wishes to Miles Baton, 8th; and Alexia Vermiere, 13th.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Gus and Edith Tamburro and Jim and Barbara Craig as they celebrate 58 years on the 10th.  Many More.  Both couples had homes in Lopez.  Tamburro’s are back in Marlton, NJ.  Jim and Barbara have sold their home in Media and are now living in sunny Florida.  Miss all of them here.

HINT:  ” Salt water can be used to prevent wicker furniture from turning yellow.  Also, spread salt between bricks and blocks on your patio, sprinkle water and you have created you own weed killer.”

I’m sure there will be Fall activities going on in the County so keep an eye on the Sullivan Review for those things you might be interested in.  Might be some last minute yard sales if the weather is nice.

Guess that’s it for now from this neck of the woods.  Enjoy your week.  You’ll need the sunglasses and AC for sure.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Weather has been warming up pretty good.  The weekend was nice and lots of quads and motorcycles took advantage to go for rides.  Hopefully, this will last for a while.

Bob and I saw a bald eagle last week on our way to Wilkes-Barre, out on Route 487 toward Red Rock.  We stopped in Hunlock Creek to visit with Bob Jr. and Tyler; went on to Forty Fort to visit Mike and Lola Mattie and their daughter and grandson, Georgia and Mcguire were also there to visit.  Went on our way to get some shopping done.  Was a nice day out.

Happy Birthday wishes to Kristin (McDonald) Mensch, the 5th.  Hope you have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Shawn and Crystal Pequignot as the celebrate on the 4th.  Also to Joe and Rose (McDonald) as their special day is on the 5th.  Have a nice day, folks.

HINT:  “Some uses for WD40:  Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.  Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bikes for easy handling.  Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keep them running smoothly.”

Hope you all have a good Labor Day Holiday.  From what I hear the weather is to be above normal temperatures, so that will be in our favor.  Will be nice for last summer picnics, and pool time.   Quads and motorcycles are good any time.

There will probably still be activities around the County the next couple of months, so keep an eye on the Sully to see if there is something you might be interested in.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you plan to do.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Geez.  I guess Mother Nature sure doesn’t like us.  Like someone said, I wish we could ship this rain to California to help put out those fires.   Heavy rain; quits for a short time; rain again; goes on and on.  We need some warm, sunny weather to help dry things up.  Creeks are filled and some have over flowed.  Some areas were hit hard again with this last rain.  Lots of clean up to do now.

The Civic Association would like to thank the following for their help in making our Old Home Day the success it was.  Thanks to Gordie and Joanne Durland for the hay wagon; Patson Mechanical Contracting for the hay; Fitzpatrick and Lambert for the tractor; Mildred Fire Company for water for the dunk tank and also for the use of their french fryer; Mildred Ambulance on stand-by; and Cory McDonald for his generous donation toward fire works.    A big THANK YOU to Brian McGuire for his diligence and hard work getting things ready for OHD. He worked in the rain and mud from early morning until late evening to make sure everything would be done and ready.  Despite the mud and puddles, most went very well.  Mother Nature just didn’t have it in mind to give us a good week.  Hopefully, next year will be much better.

And, Saturday, , Dushore went through the same thing with Founder’s Day activities.  Lots of rain but I guess most things went on anyway.  Let’s hope the week brings some better weather.

On Monday, Sr. Ella Mae McDonald, JoAnn McDonald, and Leo McDonald toured Sullivan County for an enjoyable day.   Stopped at the Byzantine Cemetery in Lopez to check on John McDonald’s grave site and stopped to say Hello to the McGuire’s.

Bob and I spent Sunday afternoon with Bob, Jr. and Tyler in Hunlock Creek.  Brian McGuire also stopped by for a visit.  Nice family time.

Bridge work is coming along slowly due to all the rain and flooding.  Take a look at www.lopezpa.com and check out the progress.

Don’t forget……Tuesday, the 21st, 5 p.m. civic picnic at the Pavilion.  Bring a dish to pass and your table service.  This is open to the community and to those who volunteered their time and energy on Old Home Day.    There will be a civic meeting at 6 p.m.

School starts on the 23rd so be aware of kids waiting for the bus.   Good luck to all in the new school year; and to those who are home schooled or cyber schooled.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Kevin Pequignot, 16th; TJ Lowden, 17th; Andrew Froese, 20th; and Mary (Maximiek) Santiago, 21st.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Annversary to Bill and Bonnie Killian as they celebrate on the 16th.  Congratulations and many more.

HINT:  “If you have flies, spray with Windex.  If you have ants, spray with Fabreze.”   (Thanks, Sr. Ella Mae McDonald)

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Check the Sully for up-coming events that will be taking place.  Might be something you’re interested in.

Do you realize before long it will be Labor Day and summer will be about gone.  I won’t mention what comes after that.  Just don’t want to think about it.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week, whatever your pleasure.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.   I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on August 10, 2018 by Bob McGuireAugust 12, 2018

We’ve sure had our days of rain and power outages.  It rained all week and made it very hard to prepare for our Old Home Day activities on Saturday.  But, all turned out well and things got done and the Old Home Day turned out well, despite the mud and puddles all around.  The kids liked playing in the puddles.   There was no rain at all on Saturday.

The Civic Association would liked to thank ALL those who worked so diligently and you, the public, for making our day the success that it was.  There was a nice crowd and I hope all had a good time.

The annual Civic picnic will be held on Tuesday, August 21st, 5 p.m. at the Pavilion.  This is for all in the community and for those who worked Old Home Day.  Bring a dish to pass and your table service.  There will be a civic meeting at 6 p.m.   Mark your calendar now and hope to see you there.

I know there were a lot of folks who came in for Old Home Day weekend, but I didn’t get names, etc., so if you’d like your family news in, please let me know and I can do that for next week.

Happy Birthday wishes to Kari Spinosa, 11th; Al Kapler, 12th; Linda Beaver 13th; Lisa (Beaver) Sperry, 14th; and Dustin Burke, 15th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

The Homza reunion was held at Connell’s Dam on Saturday.  Visiting

Irene Huray and Irene Pequignot on Saturday was Mickey and Karen Bednar; Paul, Marge and Lynn Bednar.  On Sunday was Shawn, Crystal and Dylan Pequignot; Kevin and Alyssa Pequignot and friend, Levi.  They all went blueberry picking and had no encounter with Mr. Bear.

St. Vladimir’s has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

There will be a Job Corps CRC picnic at the Pavilion on the 16th at 5 p.m.  This is for the community and to let you know what Job Corps is about and how they are doing.  It is open to all, so hope you can go.

That’s it.  I know there will be more OHD news for next week.  Enjoy your day; looks to be quite nice.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Scenes from LOPEZ OLD HOME DAY 2018

Lopez, PA Posted on August 6, 2018 by Bob McGuireAugust 6, 2018

Good grief!!!  As to the weather, what can I say except we sure had some torrential down pours for about five days straight.  Basements flooded; roads flooded and were closed, mud slides and some roads washed away.  Sunday was an exceptionally nice day and hope we will get lots more of them.

Don’t forget……………..SATURDAY, the 4th, is the day.  Lopez Old Home Day, Noon to Midnight.  Chicken dinner is back; lots of good food, games, hay rides, dunk tank, bingo, raffles and Country Store.  Music by the Gypsys, 2-5 p.m.  DJ “B” from 9 p.m. to midnight.  Awesome fireworks.

I’d like to shout out a special Thank You to the great group of volunteers who gathered on Saturday to clean the pavilions and grounds to get ready for Old Home Day.  That included Molly and Clair; Dave and Ruth; Vito and Pat; Brian; Heather, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh; and Nina.  Good job done by all in record time.

Marc and Lisa Fenster, grand daughters, Lily and Eve Lopez; and Marc and Tatiana Fenster, all from Philly, spent some time at their home on Church Street.  The girls enjoyed playing with Kaeleigh and Kyleigh and going swimming and biking.

SS Peter and Paul Byzantine Church had services on Sunday afternoon.  The Priest blessed the new dome and cross that has been erected; looks really nice.

I have something I’d like to pass along to anyone driving on Church Street.  Very shortly we will have 12 kids, yes 12 kids, living on Church Street.  They like to bike ride, scooter ride, color the road with chalk and do summer things.  Please be aware and drive slowly.  It’s not Route 66 and it could avoid an accident. So, please SLOW DOWN when traveling that street.  There is a sign at the top of the hill that says, “Watch Children”, but I don’t think it’s paid attention to.

Happy Birthday wishes to Stephen Mikolajczyk and Sherill Dayton, both on August 4th; Kyle Froese and Kathy Lebo, 9th; Randy Lebo, Jackie Craig and Mary Lowden, 10th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, visited her mother, Mrs. Irene Huray, on Sunday.  Also, Sophie Bednar, Owego, NY, is spending a few days there.

HINT:  “Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season. It will repel them.   Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner for a nice smell.”

There are many more things going on around the County, so keep an eye on the Sully to see what might interest you.

Tent City is starting to fill up for their annual get-together.  There will be many campers, tents and trailers filling the fields and lots of adults, kids and pets for all to enjoy their time here.

Sympathy from the community to Eleanor Grandinetti on the recent passing of her son.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; may need the umbrella and slicker, but it will be quite warm.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Bridge work continues in spite on poor weather.  Looking good guys.

Lopez, PA Posted on July 27, 2018 by Bob McGuireJuly 27, 2018

Weekend wasn’t a total wash out.  Did have some heavy rain late Saturday and early Sunday.  Power was off from 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. due to equipment failure.  I guess the gardens and flower beds got a really good drink.   Last I heard, it’s to rain most of the week.  Sure will be pretty soggy in spots.

Carole Kilgus was honored at an 80th birthday party on Saturday, held at Connell’s Dam.  Many family, friends and neighbors gathered to wish her many more years of health and happiness.  Lots of good food and visiting too.  The little kids even enjoyed swimming.  The rain did hold off until all were packed up and on their way home.  Looking forward to the 70th next year, Carole.

NEWS FLASH:  Don’t forget Lopez Old Home Day is ONE day this year.  Will be on Saturday, August 4th, from Noon to Midnight.  Hope to see you there.  For details, check the ad elsewhere in the paper.

There will be a work bee to get ready for Old Home Day on Saturday, the 28th; 10:30 a.m.  Volunteers welcome to help.  Come to the pavilion and see what you can do to get the job done.

At our last work bee, working with tree branches, leaves, etc., someone mistakenly took one of our leaf rakes home.  Check to see if you have an extra rake.  Return would be appreciated.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Sullivan County 4-H Model Rocketry launch will be Saturday, the 28th, at Harvey Vough’s farm at 10:30 a.m.  Alumni welcome.  Rain date will be Sunday, the 29th.

Joe, Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent some time at their home here.  Also joining them were grand daughters Haley Latch, St. Georges, DE, and Rachel Ruggerio, Elkton, MD.  The girls did a good job raking the grass after it had been mowed.  And, had a good time here. The blueberries are ripening and ready to pick.  I know of some folks who went to pick and the bear was there two different days.  Think I’ll stay away from that area.

You could mark your calendar now for Tuesday, August 21st for the annual Civic picnic at the Pavilion.  Will be at 5 p.m. with the meeting at 6 p.m.  Bring a dish to pass and your table service.

Bob Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, stopped by to visit Bob and JoAnn McGuire and Brian McGuire on Friday on their way to RIT in Rochester, NY.  Tyler will be a Senior at Lake Lehman Jr./Sr. High School so is looking into colleges and what he might like to take.  From Rochester, they went to Cambridge, MA, to check a couple colleges there.   Time sure flies by.  Seems like a short time ago, he was just a little kid playing in the creek and looking for cray fish.

Happy Birthday wishes to Dominic Sneidar (2), 24th; Jan Marie Manuel, 25th; Marino Santarelli, Mark Hartnett and Carole Kilgus, 28th; Madison Burke and Matt Dayton, 29th; and Casey Bonardi, 30th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  ” Once a month use original Dawn as you would shampoo. It will remove excess oil from your hair and scalp and strip away any build-up of styling products without any damage. Perform this once a month and you won’t have to buy expensive salon products that do the same thing.”

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week, even if it is rainy.  Will be warm so you can still go out and about……use an umbrella.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Weather has put a damper on the bridge work, but it still progresses.
