Lopez, PA Posted on August 4, 2020 by Bob McGuireAugust 4, 2020

Hope you all enjoyed another nice week of good weather.  We did have one day of rain, but it didn’t last long.  Always pours, then quits, the sun comes out and it gets hot.  Good time to get some camping, swimming and picnics in.  The gardens are looking nice and starting to produce some good veggies.  Flower beds and hanging baskets are doing really well too.

Mike, Heather, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald took advantage of the weather and had fun camping for a few days.  Had fires, enjoyed the creek and just to get away was nice.

Bob Jr. and Tyler McGuire visited with us, his brother, Brian, and Nina Weslowski on Sunday.

It was such a nice evening on Saturday, we sat out late and did hot dogs over the fire on a fork.  Was so quiet and calm.

Thanks to Jason for the nice display of fireworks on Saturday.  We could see them from our upstairs window.

Since there are not many activities and things going on due to this virus junk, I don’t have a lot of news.  Folks are kinda staying close to home and going out when necessary.  Gotta do what you gotta do.  Practice social distancing, wear a mask, keep away from people if you’re sick or they’re sick.  Most of all…..WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN.

Alex and Ginny Stavisky and Ted and Faye Puzo are spending some time at their homes here.  Enjoying the nice weather and taking rides on their golf carts.

Next Civic meeting will be on WED. August 19th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  We would like to get some more interested in joining the Civic, for only $1.00 and help with ideas and projects.  We do have t-shirts, hoodies, koozies and a couple license plates for sale.  If interested, contact me.  If you have any ideas for a fund raiser, let us know.  With no Old Home Day, our funds are running low.

Happy Birthday to Stephen Mikolajczyk and Sherill Dayton, August 4th; Kyle Froese and Kathy Lebo, 9th.  Have a nice day.

I think the weather for the week, from what I heard, is to be hot and humid again, with temperatures in the 90’s.  Time to turn the air conditioner on, get in the pool or go to the creek.

Geez.  That’s about it.  Hopefully soon  more folks will be able to come to their homes, cabins and campgrounds to enjoy some summer time weather.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.

Had a nice week with only one day of rain.  Saturday and Sunday were hot  and I hear all next week is to be HOT!.  Saturday was kind of a quiet day, but Sunday was the day to hear the quads and motorcycles out and about enjoying the nice weather.   We had a very brief shower early Sunday evening.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly spent a few days at their home here, just taking care of lawn mowing and watching the animals.  Nice weather for just hanging around the house.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire stopped to visit with us on Sunday evening.  We did the face masks, social distancing; the whole nine yards, and enjoyed hot dogs over the wood fire.

Adel Bradshaw was here for a couple of days working on her flowers and enjoying the nice weather.

With the virus still hanging around, folks don’t venture out too far from home.  It’s safer to stay put.   So, there is not much news to report.

Civic meeting in August will be the third WEDNESDAY, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.

Going to round out the month of July with Birthday Wishes.  Happy Birthday to Dominic Sneidar who will be 4 on the 24th; Jan Marie Manuel, 25th; Marino Santarelli and Carole Kilgus, 28th; Madison Burke, 29th; and Casey Bonardi, 30th.  Have a nice day.

Alex and Ginny Stavisky and Ted and Faye Puzo are spending some vacation time here and enjoying the nice weather, wearing masks and doing the social distancing.    Enjoying rides on their golf carts.

B’s gang says Happy Birthday to Billy Stasiak as he celebrates on the 23rd.  Also, special wishes from Cecilia Rose for a great day!.

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week.  Wear the sunscreen and drink lots of water to stay hydrated.  Guess the gardens and flowers will need water if we don’t get the rain they need.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.

Hope you all had a good week  We had some hot days and also a couple of really stormy days.  Two different days it thundered, the wind blew like crazy and the rain came down so hard you couldn’t see outside.  There were places where the wind took down some trees.  Someone thought it may have been a little tornado but I didn’t hear anything so guess not.  The rain was welcome for the gardens and flowers; they were getting pretty dry.  The weather was nice for motorcycle riding, quadding, bikes, pool time and cookouts.

Civic meeting, WEDNESDAY, July 22nd, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Please wear a mask and we will do social distancing.  August and September meetings will be on the third Wednesday rather than Tuesday.

Congratulations to Alyssa Pequignot and Jordon Siddle as they became parents to a baby boy.  Brayson Thomas Lee Siddle was born on July 5th, weighing 7 lbs. 14 oz. and 20 inches long.  Both mother and baby are doing well.  The family lives in Williamsport.  Kevin Pequignot is the proud grandpa and Irene (Huray) Pequignot, Linden, the great grandmother.

Some folks are still coming to their homes, cabins and campsites, but staying pretty much there, due to a rise in the corona virus cases.

Don’t have a lot of news as most activities have been cancelled for the summer.  Hope next year will be a good year for everyone.

Happy Birthday to Matthew Santarelli and Barbara Craig, 17th; Adam Aharonian, 18th; Evalyn Lansberry and Sr. Ella Mae McDonald, 20th; and Matt Beaver, 21st.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Guess that’s all for now.  Enjoy your week.  Hope it’s a good one.  The Civic Association still has a few t-shirts, hoodies and koozies for sale.  If interested, contact me at the information below.   Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Another proud collector of the Lopez mugs. she got started late, but with other mugs has quite
a lovely collection. Thank you Evelyn.

Lopez, PA Posted on July 12, 2020 by Bob McGuireJuly 12, 2020

We had a pretty nice week weather-wise.  We did have a couple rain storms but they didn’t last long.  Gave the gardens and flowers a little drink at least.  The weekend weather was perfect as folks were at their cabins, homes, campgrounds for the Holiday weekend.  They pretty much stayed contained and enjoyed picnics, quad riding, pool time and games.  Had quite a few really nice fireworks displays that we watched from your back yard.  Sunday at 8 p.m. it was still 75 degrees and sunny.

James Walsh, Dushore, a service veteran, came to Lopez on Saturday, the 4th and visited each cemetery and played taps.  What a tribute to our men and women.  Thanks so much, James.  It was so appreciated for you to do this and we did hear the playing of taps.  Thanks, Jack, for giving me that information.

Remember, the Civic meetings for July, August and September will be held on WEDNESDAY, rather than Tuesday.  July 22, August 19, and September 16, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion where we social distance and wear masks.

Last I heard, the latest virus number is 10.  We were doing so good with none and now we are climbing.  Let’s hope it doesn’t go up any more.  Just take the usual precautions and all will be fine, I hope.

Happy Birthday wishes to Samantha Burke, 10th; Dan Stasiak, 11th; Quinn Vinetelli, 12th; Woody Woodford and Averie Bahr, 13th; David Black and Molly Johnson, 14th.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to David and Lavonne Black and Matt and Sherill Dayton as they both celebrate on the 14th.  Have a wonderful day.

The bear(s) are still around all different times of the day and evening.  There have been some pretty good pictures on Face Book of what they’ve been up to.  The deer, bunnies and chipmunks are around looking for treats.

I see the Sullivan County Fair has been cancelled.  That’s too bad, but for the best, due to rise in virus cases.  It’s really a shame that so many summer activities have had to be cancelled.  Hopefully next year will be a really good year for everyone.

Guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week.  I heard chance of rain EVERY day, but it’s been predicted before and never happened, so we’ll see.  Get out in this nice weather.  If it does rain, it will still be warm.  Just take an umbrella.

Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopez.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on July 12, 2020 by Bob McGuireJuly 12, 2020

We had some really nice weather during last week.  Lots of sun, warmth and breezes.  Saturday it poured early, but gave the gardens, flower beds and baskets a nice drink.  Sunday came came in afternoon and all got a nice drink again.  Made everything spring right up.

NOTICE:   THE JULY, AUGUST, AND SEPTEMBER CIVIC MEETINGS WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, RATHER THAN TUESDAY, DUE TO A CONFLICT WITH SOMETHING ELSE THAT COULDN’T BE CHANGED.  STILL 6 P.M. AT THE PAVILION.  DATES ARE JULY 22, AUGUST 19, AND SEPTEMBER 16.  MARK YOUR CALENDAR SO YOU WILL REMEMBER.

The animals are still around.  Bear(s), coyotes and fox have been seen roaming.  The mother bear and two cubs are visiting many people in town and I heard there is a mother bear and three cubs up on State Game Lands outside of town.  Be on the watch for these guys.  Someone posted on Face Book that they put their dog out and heard so much commotion.  When they checked, the bear had the dog in his mouth.  They made lots of noise and the bear finally let go, went to the neighbors to harass the dogs there.   This was in Mildred.  We just have too many bear around here and they come earlier and closer all the time.

Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.  I imagine lots of picnics, family time and pool time over that weekend.

Saw on TV the other night that Sullivan County is now up to four confirmed cases of COVID 19.   Don’t know how the others are doing, but hope they are recovering well.  Would be nice if the whole thing would go away, but doesn’t seem like it will anytime soon.

Special 95th birthday wishes to Mary (Mamie) Kravetz as she celebrates on the 2nd of July.  Also on the 2nd is Don Springer and Stacey Olsen; Brandan McCobin, 4th.    Hope you all have a nice day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Christ Darrow for July 2nd; and Bill Stasiak, 6th.  Have a great day.

Happy Anniversary to Kurt and Linda Schroeder, 3rd; Mike and Heather McDonald for 13 years on the 7th; Jeff and Kristin (McDonald) Mensch, 5 years also on the 7th.  Have a wonderful day.

Bob Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited for a short time with  his parents, Bob and JoAnn McGuire.  We did the face masks, social distancing, the whole thing to stay safe.

I guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week.  I heard it’s to be warm but chance of showers every day.  Hopefully the weekend will be good for the Fourth Holiday.  So, get out, get some fresh air, work in the garden, plant some flowers, take advantage of the nice weather.   Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on June 26, 2020 by Bob McGuireJune 26, 2020

Hope you all had a nice Father’s Day and celebrated with your loved ones.  Was a nice week for a change.  I think there was one day with a storm, but can’t even remember what day.  It was mostly sunny, breezy and nice.  Sunday was quite hot and humid.  Pool time for many.

The bear has been around again.  Was seen on Wednesday on Main Street at Mark Williams, Tim Brown’s and right on Carmela’s porch by her kitchen door.  Was also seen a couple of times on Church Street and on one of the porches on Maple Terrace.    She has a good time tipping over the burning barrels and this time trashed a couple of grills.  Never know what’s next.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home here.  They had Mrs. Bear and her two cubs Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.  Diane had left the riding mower by the pole barn and she and Joe were sitting on the porch having a cool drink and they came down from the woods.  Mrs. Bear smelled the mower and the cubs were playing on the mower.  She finally took the cubs and went off into the woods.  They are getting to be more friendly and coming at earlier times.  The guy down the road from us is working on a house.  He had the garage open and was in the basement and when he came out he said a bear must have gotten one bag and taken it outside and tore it open.  So, people, keep a watchful eye out for these buggers.  They may be really cute, but you don’t want to mess with them.

Sorry to report there will be NO Old Home Day for 2020, due to COVID-19.  Just not worth the risk of someone getting sick and there are so many stipulations still in effect. Since there is no Old Home Day, I do have t-shirts, hoodies and koozies for sale, if anyone is interested.  Contact me at the info below.  Trying to do some sales to have money in the “coffers” to pay the bills.   There also is NO flea market this year, due to the same.   Hopefully next year will be much better and things will be normal again.

The gardens and flower beds are looking really good.  The lilac bushes got frozen so no flowers on them this year and I always loved the smell of them.  I think most of the apple blossoms also froze.

More businesses are slowly opening up and more folks getting out to support them.  However, remember to wear your mask, do social distancing and WASH YOUR HANDS when you get home.  This virus is not over yet, so it’s still good to take precautions.

Happy Birthday to Jean Woodford, 24th; Andy Matychak and Garrett Burke, 27th.  Hope you have a fun day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Matt Karchner who celebrates on the 28th.  Hope it’s great.

I guess that’s it from here.  It’s bed time for me late on Sunday evening when I’m done with my news.  Enjoy your week.  I heard it’s to be pretty nice, with a few storms.  However, we were to get showers all week and only had the one.  I guess the rest missed us.  We do need a little rain to keep the gardens and flower beds wet, but not a down pour like what we have had.

Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

WEBMASTER NOTE:

The 2020 Lopez Commemorative Mug is the Sulick Hall. Much interesting history is credited to this building.  Mr. Sulick had a butcher store on the lower right. Not sure what was in the lower left first, but remember John (Shoester) Huray there with his shoe shop.  He could actually make a pair of shoes from scratch to finish.  Many card games were played on the top of a large barrel.  Upstairs was a large hall which held basket ball games and Voelke Balls were held.  There was also a living quarters in back which from time to time housed area residents.

Lopez, PA Posted on June 17, 2020 by Bob McGuireJune 17, 2020

Hope you all had a good week and got many things done with the nice days we had.  Was a pretty good week with warm weather and sunny days.  Rain did come in Wednesday evening after 7 p.m.  On Saturday, Mama Bear and her two cubs made the rounds.  Sunday we had a low of 29 degrees, with a good frost.  Hopefully you had your flowers and gardens covered or maybe you had some “fried” things.  Was sunny, but chilly all day.  Around 10 a.m. Mama Bear and her two cubs were back.  Tipped over the burning barrel at the neighbor’s home.  The two cubs went up a tree while Mama walked around, down the neighbor’s driveway, down over the bank, back up to the neighbor’s house and right up on the porch.  Finally, she and the cubs went off into the woods.  They’ll be back, I’m sure.  They come earlier all the time.  They were also seen in one of the yards on Main Street and got into another burning barrel there too.  So, they know Lopez pretty well.

Not a lot going on around town.  I did hear a ton of motorcycles going both Saturday and Sunday so they were all taking advantage of the nice weather.  There are always quads and dirt bikes being ridden too.  It’s also nice to smell the charcoal grills making a delicious meal.  Swimming pools are starting to be used when it’s warm enough.

Adel Bradshaw was in for a couple days to check on her house and so was Joe and Diane Fanning who came in to mow the grass and take care of their home.  I know there were others who probably were around but I didn’t hear from them or see them.

The gardens are looking really good and the flower beds and hanging baskets are so pretty.   The humming birds especially like some of the different, colorful flowers and it’s always fun watching them chasing each other around.

Happy Birthday wishes to send to Dana (Bling Bling) Dempsey, 20th; Jack Caccia, 22nd; and Cindy Stavisky, 23rd.  Hope you all have a grand day.

Congratulations to the Sullivan County High School Class of 2020.  Hope you all have great success in whatever you choose to do.

Sunday is FATHER’S DAY!!   Have an enjoyable day with those that are special to you.

Can’t think of anything more for this time.  Enjoy your week.  I heard it’s to be really nice and mostly rain free.  I’ll take it.  Get out and take advantage; sit on the porch, read a book; get your hands dirty in the garden.  Just Get Out!!  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Just a note from the webmaster: If you see Bob or Lisa Burke, wish them a VERY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY YOU TWO.

Lopez, PA Posted on June 3, 2020 by Bob McGuireJune 3, 2020

We finally had a pretty nice week for a change.  Was warm, sunny and breezy and was good.  We did have a couple of thunder storms that dumped a lot of rain on Friday.  Sunday was the coolest morning when the thermometer read 38 degrees.  Did warm up, but not much and the wind was wicked all day.  Guess it’s time to cover the flowers and gardens to keep the frost away.

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and friends of George (Georgie) Baton III who passed away on Monday, the 25th, due to an automobile accident.  He will certainly be missed.

Sympathy also the the family and friends of Paul Robinson who passed away.  He was the owner of the former Grid Iron Hotel here in town.  Nice man.

Don’t forget, Tuesday, June 16th, 6 p.m. Civic meeting at the Pavilion.

Summer is about here but kids have been out of school since this pandemic.  Please drive a little slower when going through town and on Church Street.  Lots of little ones, as well as older ones, out and about and I’ve seen some speeders.  Take it easy.  We don’t need any unnecessary accidents.

Well, Sullivan County is now up to three confirmed cases of the virus since another person just tested positive.  Sure wish this would end.  Please take precautions when going out.  Wear a mask, practice social distancing, use hand sanitizer before and after touching things in public.   Most summer activities have been cancelled.  Just have to make the best of a not so good situation right now.  Hopefully by the New Year it will be over and done with.

Happy Birthday to Sandy Kriel, 14th; and Nathan Kinsey, 17th.  Have a nice day.

B’s Gang sends birthday wishes to Nina Weslowski on the 14th; and Marty Slocum on the 16th.  Have a super day.

There are some that are slowly starting to come to their homes or cabins here, especially since the weather is getting nicer.  There are turkey hunters around but I don’t know if anyone got any.

The bear has been around.  Lowden’s had a Mama and two cubs at their house that took out their grill.  Didn’t bother the burning barrel.  Tim Brown had one that did turn over the barrel and snooped around.   They are cute, but sure can do damage at one’s home.

Like watching the birds at the feeders and the deer on the hill across the street.  They can entertain a person for a few minutes different times during the day.

I guess that’s it for now.  Heard we are to get some rain during the week, but a little warmer.  If you have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Enjoy your week.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

NOTICE…… good news, the pretty girl going into the Lopez school in the April 8th news is Agnas Bushofsky. She is Rossanne Lukachik’s aunt. Now maybe some one can ID the ladies in the April 18th news edition.

Lopez, PA Posted on June 3, 2020 by Bob McGuireJune 3, 2020

Hope you all had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend and took the time to say a prayer and honor those who sacrificed their life so we could be free.  Our week was pretty nice for a change.  Monday and Tuesday lows were in the 50’s; Wednesday was 38 degrees but warmed up and was sunny and breezy.  Thursday there was a frost with only 26, but by 2 p.m. it had warmed up to 70 degrees.    Friday we had some rain late in the day.  Saturday the low was 60 degrees.  Can you believe that.  Got up to 80 degrees by 5 p.m.  Was warm, sunny and nice.  Sunday was more clouds than sun but still warm and a nice day for those celebrating the holiday.  Sunday evening we were treated to some fireworks from three different places.  They were nice and enjoyable.

In my walks over the weekend I saw many folks out and about and things going on.  Some were working in their gardens and flower beds; some were mowing lawns; say quite a few quads and dirt bikes going back and forth.  There were families taking walks and some enjoying the pond and Nessie.  I could smell the food cooking on the grills as they were having cook-outs.  All in all, a great holiday weekend for a change.  So glad the rain held off for the weekend.  I talked to some that had heavy rain on Saturday.  We had really black clouds for a while, but they passed over and we got nothing here.  Mother Nature was finally good to us.

People are starting to come a little more often, but still taking precautions and doing the social distancing and wearing masks when out shopping. Businesses are slowly re-opening, with restrictions.  Little by little, maybe we’ll finally get back to about normal.  Because of this virus, most summer activities have been cancelled.  Let’s hope next year everyone will do much better and this virus will be long gone and a thing of the past.

Congratulations to Joel Barnosky who was promoted from Lt Col to Col USAFR on May 27th, via Zoom.  Joel and his wife, Bernadette, and son, spend time when they can at the homestead in Lopez..

Civic meeting on Tuesday, June 16th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Flea market for June 20th has been cancelled and hope another date is in the future.

June 2nd —   Don’t forget to get out and VOTE.

Happy Birthday wishes to Lydia Stasiak, June 5th; Lynn Malkemes, 8th, and Matt Dayton, 10th.  Have a good day.

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week.  I heard warm weather, with some rain likely, but that’s much better than cold and frost and very windy.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; see me or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on May 21, 2020 by Bob McGuireMay 21, 2020

Well, another week with some “iffy” weather.  Had some low temperatures in the early morning and some days it warmed up and some it did not.  A few days of frost.  Lots of sun.  Of course, lots of wind.  Saturday was really nice and lots of motorcycles were out and about.  Sunday was nice until light rain started to fall around 4 p.m. in the afternoon.  I don’t like the weather report I heard for the week……chance of showers every day………..hope it will change.  Seems like summer will just pass us by.

Businesses are slowly getting back open, but still with restrictions.  Maybe soon it will be back to “normal”, what that is.  Check out the dining and entertainment page for take-out foods and other things that may have gotten back to being open.  I know there are many, many people waiting for the barber shops and beauty salons to open.

We only had one confirmed case of the virus in Sullivan County.  I see on TV the other night when they showed the map, Sullivan County now has two confirmed cases.  Hope that will be it.

There will be a Civic meeting on Tuesday, June 16th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion so we can do “social distancing”.  Hope we can get some summer activities planned.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Susan Aharonian, 24th; Tanya Stasiak, 25th; Michele Craig and Jake Gardner (will be 92), 26th; Nick DeSanto, 29th; and Bruno Day, 31st.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Tony and Patti Sneidar as they celebrate on the 26h; Joe and Diane Fanning, 28th; and  Jack and Joyce Walsh on the 29th.  Have a great day.

B’s Gang sends birthday wishes to Sandy Pardoe as she celebrates her special day on the 31st.  Hope it’s a fun day.

Guess that’s it for this time.  Enjoy your week.  May need the umbrella, but get out anyway.   Fresh air will make you feel good.  Not much going on with gardens and flower beds with all the frost and rain.  Maybe get that done soon.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Webmaster,  Got an interesting note from my buddy Alex, and thought it should be shared cause memories can be heart warming:

“I was thinking about the Lopez Memorial Day services having to be canceled this year.  Somehow that hit me.  I remember when we lived in Pennsylvania we would always bring the kids to Lopez that weekend.  It wasn’t just for a holiday but a lesson in patriotism and civic pride.  Every year new questions would arise for me to answer.  As part of our day we would visit the cemetery after the services.  Mike, about 6, was counting all the Veteran flags when Cindy asked me,  “Dad, why did they have to die?”  I could only answer that question with a hug.  Without fail, our kids proudly display the Stars & Stripes at their homes.  Mom and I could not be more proud of them.
This year, as always, I will be seeing Mary Gavlick placing the wreath in front of the Lopez  Memorial.  Take care and we hope to see you all sometime this summer.”

Lopez, PA Posted on May 17, 2020 by Bob McGuireMay 17, 2020

Hope everyone had a nice Mother’s Day weekend. For May, the weather was pretty miserable some days.  Monday wasn’t bad.  Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday was only 28 degrees in the early morning, with frost.  Warmed up some later in the day.  Friday was horrible with rain that turned to snow that covered the ground.  Saturday was only 20 degrees early with frost again and light snow off and on during the day.  We did have a couple of warm days when the temperature was up in the 50’s.  Sun felt good, but that sure didn’t last.   Mother Nature’s boyfriend was ever present with his wind blowing most of the time, sometimes pretty hard.

Congratulations to Klyer Burke for Distinguished Honor Roll for the 3rd marking period.  Congratulations to Charles Armioia, Paige Burke, Joey Malkemes and John Carmelo for Honor Roll.  Great job to all of you.

The fox has been back.  The neighbors saw him roaming around down there trying to catch a rabbit but it got away.  Be on the watch for the “sly guy” and hope he’s not after the chickens.

There will be NO civic meeting for the month of May.  There will be a meeting on Tuesday, June 16th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion so we can do social distancing.   The flea market that had been scheduled for June 20th has been postponed to a later date, which we don’t know yet.

I sure hope this virus will be over soon.  It’s so sad that folks can’t get together to visit and for those who cannot see loved ones in nursing homes or hospitals.  At least with modern technology, a lot of people can do Skype, Facetime or Zoom to get in touch.  Not only that, there are so many that are out of work and would really like to get back in the work force.  It’s going slow and hopefully will be in full gear soon.  We just have to do the best we can.  Wear masks, gloves, do social distancing and WASH YOUR HANDS!!

Birthday wishes to Cory McDonald and Deacon Burke, 15th; Marian Hubiak, 19th; and Janet Weidner, 22nd.  Hope you all have a sunny day.

Happy Anniversary to Tim and Bobbi Jo Brown as they celebrate on the 21st.  Have a happy day and many more.

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week.  Maybe it will be a little warmer and no snow.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on May 6, 2020 by Bob McGuireMay 6, 2020

Weather has been up and down.  We had some rain last Monday; frost on Tuesday; sunny on Wednesday; heavy rain all day and into the night on Thursday.  Ended up having four plus inches by Friday morning.  There was flooding in some areas, which was sad as it just gets cleaned up and we get more rain.  Just can’t seem to get a break.  Saturday and Sunday were really nice with the temperatures hitting the 60’s and 70’s mark.  Was still 70 degrees after 7 p.m. on Sunday evening.  The sun felt good and I’ll take more of these sunny, warm days.  Maybe the sun will dry up the wet, gushy ground.

CHANGE – There will be NO Civic  meeting in May.  There will be NO Memorial Day services in town.  The Flea Market scheduled for late June has been POSTPONED  to a later date.  So, disregard what was written last week.    Hopefully, we will be able to have a June meeting and get things organized and going.  Watch the Sully for up-dates.

Sympathy to the Matt Dayton family on the passing of his brother Monroe (Butch) Dayton on April 29th.  He spent a lot of time at Matt’s cabin on Route 487.

With the nice weather over the weekend, I heard many motorcycles going out of town; heard lawn mowers running for folks to do first time spruce up of the yard; saw folks working in their garden and flower beds; and saw and heard the motorbikes running around.  Was a good weekend to be out and about.

The bear made his rounds again.   Was at the neighbor’s and tipped over the compost bin, went through the garden and the bee balm patch that had just been transplanted.  I did see on Face Book a mother and three cubs in Mildred area.

Lots of birds around, but no hummers yet.  Should be soon.  Flowers are blooming and look really nice.  Others don’t look so good from the frost we had earlier.

Hope many of you got your “bird” on turkey day.  Haven’t heard anything from anyone about that.  Will probably be pictures in the Sully.

Happy Belated birthday to Kyler and Paige Burke who celebrated on May 1st; and to JoAnn Day on the 2nd.  Hope you had a nice day.

Happy Birthday to Ken Pochatko, 6th; Ted Lowden; 7th; Diane Fanning, 9th;  Elizabeth Spinosa, 10th; Xander Kapler and Kessler Gilbert, 12th and Jase Lowden will be 2 years old on the 14th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Don’t forget, Sunday is MOTHER’S DAY.  Honor your Mom or anyone who has a “mother” role by doing something nice for them, even if it’s a phone call, a card or a Face Book message.  Make them feel special.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Last I heard it’s to be cooler and maybe a shower or two.  Hopefully frost and snow are over with.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Do to the China virus situation and the maintain distancing option, Lopez will not have a Memorial Day program this year.  We ask instead that every one be safe and remember all those that gave their all, those that were injured, and those that were lucky enough to return home unharmed.  They are the ones that made us safe and keep us safe.  Honor all Vets past and present. From Lopez,  to the people that produced the Memorial Day programs and the participants over the past many many years, THANK YOU.
Bob, civic pres.

Lopez, PA Posted on April 28, 2020 by Bob McGuireApril 28, 2020

About the only thing to talk about is the weather and that wasn’t so good most of the week.  We had early morning temperatures in the 20’s and some days didn’t get up to 40 degrees.  Had some snow squalls and, of course, the ever present wind.  Sunday I looked out the window and watched the rain turn to snow for a bit, then turn back to rain.  We had pouring rain almost all day and as I type my news at 11 p.m. Sunday night, it’s still raining.  From the snow and cold last week, the daffodils looked kinda droopy.  Hopefully they’ll perk back up if we get some warm, sunny weather.  With all the rain, it sure is muddy and can’t do much in the garden.  Just too wet right now.

Not much to report since most folks are not going anywhere.  Those “essentials” are working and I thank them for all they are doing to keep this virus under control.  Our Stay at Home will be lifted on May 8th, but with social distancing still in effect and six feet away from others if you do go out, I think a lot of people will still stay home, to be on the safe side.

We are going to try and have a Civic meeting on Tuesday, May 19th.  It will be at 6 p.m. and at the Pavilion, due to social distancing.  Unless things change and our Stay at Home rule is changed.   Hopefully we can still have our annual Flea Market on Saturday, June 20th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Don’t have anything else to report, so that’s it from my soggy back yard in Lopez.  Enjoy your week.  I think you will need your umbrella.  The only day I heard is to be nice is Tuesday.  Rain the rest of the week.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.  Be safe; stay well.

HERE IS THE REST OF THE STORY.

Not much to talk about but the weather and the virus.  I’d rather talk about weather.  Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were in the low 20’s early in the morning and we still have that gosh darn wind.  Friday was down to 15 degrees early and started snowing late in the day and all night.  Woke up Saturday morning to 5 inches of snow on the ground.  Enough for the plow to go through early.  Was wet and heavy.  Sunday was down to 19 degrees, but did warm up to 62 degrees in the afternoon and that felt good.  Lots of sunshine and wind, but not as bad as the other days.  We’re really due for some nice weather and hope we get it.  About time Mother Nature says enough is enough and will send some sunshine and warmth.

We have another animal to add to our little zoo of critters.  A red fox was seen by many over the weekend.  When I first saw it, I didn’t want to believe it, but then when I heard others saw it, I knew it had to be.

Sympathy from the community to the family of Dorothy (McCobin) Kocher who passed away on the 13th of April.  From what I was told she lived in Lopez many years and was the valedictorian for her high school senior class in 1947.   She most recently was living in Florida.

Happy Birthday wishes to send to Katherine (Kapler) Applegate, 25th; Mickey Mowery, 26th; David Spinosa, 28th; and Abby Matychak, 30th.  Hope you all have the best day.

Since we’re under this Stay at Home rule, don’t see too many people around.  I did see quite a few daffodils that have come up, to be covered with snow.  Hope they will spring back.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week.  Time to get out and get some of that fresh air.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; call me or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on April 17, 2020 by Bob McGuireApril 17, 2020

Hope you all had a Happy Easter, despite the conditions we are under right now.  Just made the best of what we do have to be  thankful for.  The weather was not the best for the week.  We had pouring rain during the day on Thursday that changed to snow in the evening.  Had snow again on Friday.  The wind was wicked all week.  Saturday and Sunday were nicer, but the wind was still pretty evil.  There was a frost early morning almost every day, but didn’t stay around long.

The bear is back.  Visited Roseanne Lukachik on Monday evening and got her feeders.  Also stopped by Ted and Mary Lowden’s and got their suet feeder.   We didn’t have the bear, but have a pesky squirrel that got into our bird feeder, right between the wires.

Since I haven’t been out, haven’t seen too much news to report.  I watch the birds and turkeys in the field and see the neighbor girls walk the dog often.  I do take walks.  It’s nice to be outside to get the sun and fresh air.

Don’t know how long before folks can start their gardens and flower beds if they can’t get to places to purchase them.

Remember, NO Civic meeting on the 21st.  Hopefully for May.

Happy Birthday wishes to send to Roseanne Lukachik and Tom Beck, 18th; Holly Ann Sperry, 20th; Jon-Paul Matychak, 23rd.    Have a nice day.

Hope everyone is well and not bothered with the flu or the virus.  Hopefully it will be out of here soon and things will get back to normal.

Guess that’s about it.  Enjoy your week.  After Wednesday, it’ll get nicer.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Have a good week and I’ll be here next time.

This photo was taken way back when (late 40’s early 50’s) in front of Mrs. Peworchik’s house and she is on the left. Anyone recognize the other two gals.

How’s everyone doing?  Hopefully, as well as can be expected.  I was sorry to hear that Sullivan County has their first case of the virus.  I knew it was bound to happen, but I hoped it wouldn’t.  Let’s hope the person will recover fully with no after effects.  Still have to take precautions and stay home as much as possible.

The weather for the week wasn’t too bad, other than the wicked wind.  Lows were in the 20’s and 30’s with warm up during the day.  Sunday was the best day and was nice to get out and take a long walk.  Better weather is coming.  I just know it.

Congratulations to Kyler Burke on winning the S.C. Council on the Arts Literary Contest for her eerie fantasy story.  Read it in last week’s paper and continuing in next issues.  Kyler won the top award in four of the last five years she has entered.  Great job, Kyler.

St. Vladimir’s Church has halupki and pierogie for sale, the second and fourth Sunday of the month.  Available at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by and stock up.

The Che-Hanna Rock and mineral meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, the 8th, has been cancelled due to the virus.  Don’t know exactly when the next meeting will be.

The Civic Association meeting that was to be held on Tuesday, 21st, has also been cancelled until such time as we can again have meetings.

Happy Birthday wishes to send to John Risser, 12th; Joyce Walsh, 13th; Kristin Iwancio, 15th; Pat (Romania) Burd and Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, 17th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Sheldon and Penny Sperry as they celebrate on the 13th.  Congratulations and many more.

With folks staying in as much as possible, there isn’t much news to report.  Make a phone call to a neighbor or friend and see how they are doing.  They will appreciate it, especially those living alone, who would just like to hear a friendly voice.

Well, guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  May get some rain, but it’s to be a lot warmer than it has been.  I’ll take it.  Might make us feel a little better during this virus situation, which I hope will be over and done very soon.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.  Stay healthy; stay safe.

Can anyone ID the this girl going into the Lopez school way back then? Let me know. uvbob1942@gmail.com

Hope you all made it through the week.  This virus is something else.  Hopefully it will be over with soon.  We just have to abide by the rules and hope for the best.  The weather wasn’t too bad for the week.  Lows were in the mid 30’s with warm-up into the 50’s, which was nice.  Saturday we did have pouring rain and wind.  Sunday, early morning, woke up to pouring rain, thunder and lightning, but didn’t last all that long.  Drizzled on and off during the day.  Let’s hope better weather is on the way and this virus is gone.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale the second and fourth Sunday of the month.  Available at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by and pick up yours.

Don’t see many people out and about as there is really no place to go  Best way to keep in touch is by phone or internet.  Call a neighbor or friend, especially if they live alone, and just visit for a while to make sure they are ok.  They’d probably appreciate the call.

I’ve seen quite a few turkeys across the road in the field.  One day there were two males just a struttin their stuff.  Had their chests puffed out and their feathers all fanned.  Guess they were checking out all the females in the field.

We do have a lot of birds at our feeders and they are neat to watch.  The chipmunks are back and looking for treats.

Hopefully by the time you want to get plants and flowers, you’ll be able to go for those things and not worry about viruses.  Social distancing will be a thing of the past.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Shawn Pequignot, 6th; and Jaron Williams, 11th.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary from B’s Gang to Bill and Roda Stasiak as they celebrate on the 6th.  Congrats.

That’s about it.  Enjoy your week; take in some sun and get a walk in.  I hope we get some nice sunny, warm days.  Would really help with all the depression going on right now.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Have a great week and I’ll be here next time.

Hope all of you are well.  Gotta kick this virus in the ass and get it gone!!  It’s a shame that it’s causing such havoc and more businesses are closing due to Presidential or Governors orders.

Weather was here and there.  We had some early morning temperatures in the teens, one in the 20’s, and a couple in the 30’s.  Sunday morning was a glorious 11 degrees early and didn’t hit 40 degrees all day.  I’m writing this on Sunday evening and hope we get no snow that’s been predicted for Monday.  Can’t Mother Nature just give us nice, warm, sunny weather.  Tired of this up and down, hot and cold.

My neighbor said she saw a bald eagle flying over Lopez on Sunday.  I missed it.

I know it’s early, but mark your calendar now for the Civic Association annual flea market,  Will be held on Saturday, June 20th, at the Pavilion, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Table space is available and small pavilions may also be used.  If interested in space, contact me at the information below.  Time to clean out the basement, garage or attic and make a couple bucks.  Something for everyone.  Hopefully by then this virus will be long gone and a thing of the past.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month.  Pick up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.

If we can, the next Civic meeting will be Tuesday, April 21st, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Don’t know if things will still be shut down and we will not be able to socialize yet, but we’ll see what happens at that time.   I did hear that this virus is going to be around for some time.

I have a couple of the 2019 Lopez mugs available.  VFW Fire Hall, $20.00.  If interested, let me know.

Since there can’t be much going on, there’s not much to report.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Tim Higley as he celebrates on April 1st.  Have a great day.   (Know what day that is!)

Happy Birthday to V Rev Andrew Matychak whose special day is the 5th.  Hope it’s nice.

Happy Anniversary to Julio and Mary (Maximiek) Santiago who celebrate their anniversary on the 5th.  Have a nice day.

Guess that’s the news.  Be safe; stay healthy; keep your distance from others if you have to go out.  Last but not least………WASH YOUR HANDS.

Enjoy your week.  Maybe get out and take a walk.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Finally getting some nicer weather.  Had some good, not so low, early morning temperatures during the week.  Monday hit 65 degrees late afternoon. Lots of welcome sunshine.  Still pretty windy, but getting better.   Robins are out in bunches, along with the turkeys.  I heard that the ticks are out already, in big numbers.  So, be on the alert if you are quadding or walking in areas of high grass.  Please check yourself and your clothing to make sure you don’t have any attached to you.  Stupid things are as bad as this Coronavirus going around.

Congratulations to John Carmelo for second period Honor Roll.  I missed him in last week’s news.  He’s a new boy in town and I didn’t know of him.

FLASH:   Just to let you know, the 51st Annual Che-Hanna Gem and Mineral  Show, scheduled for March 28th and 29th has been cancelled, due to the virus.  Sorry to make this announcement, but hope to see you all next year.

We have a couple of the 2019 Lopez mugs, depicting VFW Fire Hall still for sale.  If interested, contact me at the info below.    The 2020 mugs have been ordered.

Hope you all are feeling ok so far.  But…..never know when that Coronavirus will hit out area.  You know the drill.  Wash your hands; stay away from crowds; if you’re sick, stay home; etc., etc. etc..

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale the second and fourth Sunday of the month.  Available at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by to get yours.  They do go fast.

Happy Birthday wishes to round out the month of March go to:  Aaron Kinsey, 21st; Irene Risser, 28th; and Heather McDonald and Trevor Kinsey, 30th.  Have a nice day.

If you stop in the post office, wish Alyssa a Happy Birthday as she celebrates on the 21st.  Have a good day, Alyssa.

Most activities and events in Sullivan County have been cancelled.  Hopefully, not for too long.  Watch the Sully for them when this is over with.  I guess the kids will be happy to be home from school for a couple weeks, but it’s hard on working parents to either stay home or find sitters.

Guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week.  Last report I heard it’s to be warm; maybe a couple rain showers.  Get out and get some fresh air, even if you need to take the umbrella along.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Take care and I’ll be here next time.  Thanks for reading.

Our weather was fairly nice during the week.  Temperatures were mainly pretty good early morning.  We did have a lot of sun,  a little rain and a snow shower, but nothing major.  There were geese flying North, a robin was seen by my neighbor in his yard, and the turkeys have made their presence known.  Sunday was a perfect day and got up to a balmy 51 degrees.  There was quadding and dirt bike riding that some enjoyed.  Did you remember to turn your clock AHEAD on Sunday morning so you weren’t late for things?

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and many friends of Alice Fedorchak who passed away on the Monday, the 2nd.  Funeral was held on Friday, with burial at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Lopez.  She was a long time Lopez resident and such a good friend and neighbor.  I enjoyed visiting and sitting on the porch visiting with both her and Mike.  She was most recently living in Williamsport and I enjoyed the many phone conversations we had.  She always said to tell everyone Hello.  She will be missed.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month.  Available at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by and get yours.  They do go fast.

Congratulations to Charles Armioia and Paige Burke for making the second period Honor Roll.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, spent a few days at their home on Church Street and took advantage of the nice weather.

Civic meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 17th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Gianna Mae DiRocco, 16th; Don Risser and Sheryln Dendler, 17th; and Joe Tabor, 18th.  Have a good day.

“B” sends birthday wishes to Steph Putnam, 17th and Kristin Putnam, 18th.  He also wishes Lori Higley a “Nifty” birthday on the 19th.  Hope you have a fantastic day.

For those of you bothered with a sore throat, put a pinch of cayenne in two ounces of water and gargle.  For flu and virus, take raw garlic clove in applesauce two times a day.  Maybe it will help, maybe not.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, visited on Monday with us and with Brian McGuire.  Tyler is on break from RIT in Rochester, NY.

With the warm weather, I don’t think much ice fishing got done, but we did see someone on Lake Jean a couple weeks ago.  Wouldn’t get me out there, for sure.

Keep an eye on the Sully.  There will be many activities coming up.  There’s always a dinner or a benefit you may be interested in.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th.  Wearin’ of the green that day and all that goes with it.  I’m sure there will be green beer and green foods served at most places to help celebrate.

I think that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  I heard it’s to be “stupendous”!!  Hopefully that will happen.  Then, we’ll probably get more cold weather.  Wish it would get warm and stay warm.  This yo-yo type weather is not for me.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Weather for the week wasn’t too bad.  Had a couple of days in the teens in the early morning.  Other days were in the 20’s and 30’s each morning.  Some days it did warm up; others it didn’t.  We had rain late Tuesday afternoon; Thursday we had some snow.  We still had that whistling wind each day.  There were quite a few turkeys in the field across the street, I guess just checking things out.  Saturday we had a snow shower that covered the roads with snow.  The roads got plowed, but the wind blew so hard it blew the snow back across the road on the hill above us.  Sunday was sunny and not quite so cold, but that darn wind still blew.   Now, I hear it’s to hit the 40’s during the week, but rain almost every day.  We’ll see what happens.  It’s pretty muddy and the ground is so soft.  Lots of ruts on the dirt roads where vehicles have traveled.  With more rain, it will get quite messy.  The month of March started out pretty nice, so does that mean March is coming in like a lamb and will go out like a lion?  Hope it will go out like a lamb too.

FLASH!!!!   Remember to turn your clocks AHEAD on Saturday evening or Sunday morning.   Wish they would leave it one way or the other and not have to do this in March and November.

Sympathy from the community to the family and friends of Ralph Edkin who passed away on February 23rd.

Sympathy from the community also to the family, relatives and friends of Joe Sbardella who passed away on February 24th. His wife, Rose (McDonald) was a former Lopezian and they had a home in Mildred.  After moving back to Warren, RI, they came to Sullivan County often during  the summer, always coming and helping at Lopez Old Home Day.  He was a very friendly, nice fellow.  He will be missed.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale every second and fourth Sunday of the month.  They will be available at the Church Hall, from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by to get your supply; they don’t last long.  They make a really good meal.

Ted and Fay Puzo, Ashtabula, OH, spent party of their winter vacation with Alex and Ginny Stavisky in Palm Bay, FL.  Alex said, “Happy to say the weather was excellent and both took some sun back home to Ohio”.

Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 17th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, spent the weekend at her home here.  Was a nice day for travel.

Sorry to hear, due to the warmer weather, that there will be no toboggan slide in Eagles Mere.  That was a major fund raiser for the Fire Company.  Been having bad luck the last few years with the weather to warm to build the slide.

Fifty-first annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 28th and 29th at the Wysox Fire Company Social Hall.  Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  Educational displays, dealers with all kinds of gems and minerals, mini-mine for the kids, cabachon making by you to take home, geode cutting, UV programs by UVBOB, door prizes and food available.  Something for everyone so stop over and take a look.

I had a phone chat with Diane Fanning on Sunday and she said maybe an early spring.  Down in Landenberg they have crocuses and daffodils coming up and they have had many robins when it’s been warm.  Don’t know where they go when it’s cold, but she said they don’t seen them.   It’s really early here for robins yet.  Hopefully soon, along with the humming birds.

Have some birthday wishes to send out.  Happy Birthday to Anthony Sneidar, March 1st; Keene Vinetelli, 5th; Bethany Dendler, 6th; Janelle Day, 9th; Ruby Malkemes and Tally (McGee) Tierney, 10th; Dan Zhou Tomasak and Julian Bonner, 11th; and Bob McGuire and Theresa Pochatko, 13th; Elizabeth Weisbrod, 14th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Happy Anniversary to Joe and Tina Taber as they celebrate on the 14th.  Have a nice day.

Congratulations to Tony Sneidar on his retirement from the Philadelphia Fire Department.  He can now enjoy his time here at his home in Dushore.

Keep an eye on the Sully for events going on that you may be interested in.

Guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week.  It’s to be warm, but take the umbrella with you; it may be needed.  Don’t forget to turn your clocks AHEAD on Saturday or Sunday early.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

As I was typing my news late Sunday evening, I happened to look out the window and it’s snowing lightly, small glistening flakes; maybe some light rain mixed in it.  I think by midnight, when I checked,  we had an inch, maybe more.  During the week, after cool mornings, it warmed up a bit.  Lows were in the 20’s except for Saturday, 6 degrees and Sunday 9 degrees.  We had a pouring rain early Friday that changed to heavy snow and really came down.  School had been cancelled the night before and that was a good call as it got worse as the day went on.  There was enough to shovel and plow.  Did go up to 50 degrees on Monday and Tuesday and that felt good.   Was nice enough to dry laundry on the line and just love the smell of freshly air dried clothes.  Of course, the wind is always with us, no matter what.  I did hear this week it’s to get up in the 40’s, which a chance of rain showers.   I did see some kids sledding on the hill across the street on Saturday.

St. Vladimir’s Church has halupki and pierogies for sale the second and fourth Sunday of each month.  Available at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by and stock up.  The do go fast.

Coming up on Friday is Valentine’s Day, so have a great day.  On Saturday is Winterfest at Camp Brule starting at 7 a.m. and also the Wine and Chocolate Walk in Dushore starting at noon.   Apparently, no toboggan slide in Eagles Mere this year, due to the warm weather and ice not thick enough to make the slide.

Happy Birthday wishes to Allison Lowden and Tim Brown, 17th, which is also President’s Day; Khloie Bahr, 19th; and Clair Johnson II, 20th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Still time to get your order in for the 2020 Lopez mug.  Still $20 and the order will be going out.  If you want one reserved, please contact me at the information below.  This year’s mug will be Sulick Hall.

Hopefully we’re going to get an early Spring.  I think everyone is ready to get out of this up and down weather.  Hope everyone who is bothered by colds and the flu is feeling much better.  I guess that Coronavirus is really causing problems.  We can only hope it doesn’t hit here; the strain of flu we have now is quite bad.

Will leave you until next time and have an enjoyable week.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me in person; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 7, 2020 by Bob McGuireFebruary 7, 2020

As I’m sitting here typing my news on Sunday afternoon, the snow is falling.  First, it’s big puffy flakes, then it’s fine.  The fields and the road are getting covered, but it’s still warm enough to try and melt some of it. The plow did go through late afternoon as there was enough to plow and shovel.  Later in the evening it turned to snow and rain.  The week wasn’t too bad after early morning frosts; the wind still with us.  Phil DID NOT see his shadow so that means early Spring.  If you can believe that.  I’m going to hold him to it.  Now, they want to not use the ground hog and use a robot.  Never heard anything so silly.

St. Vladimir’s Church now has pierogies and halupki for sale the second and fourth Sunday of each month, from Noon- 1 p.m.  Pick them up at the Church Hall.  Stop by and stock up; they go fast.

The 2020 Lopez mug is going to be Sulick Hall.  If you’d like to reserve one, let me know ASAP.  Still $20 and the order will be going out soon.  Don’t miss out.  You may not get one if you wait until they’re here.

Winterfest is coming up on Saturday, the 15th, at Camp Brule.  Check out the Sully and the Chamber website for information on this event.  Also, check the Sully for other events that may be going on and you would be interested in.

Glad to hear Mary Lowden is progressing nicely after her recent surgery.  She’s out and about a little bit and giving Ted a break from his duties.

Bob and I spent Friday in Forty Fort visiting his sister, Lola and Mike Mattie, his niece, Georgia Martin and her daughter, Casey.   On the way home we stopped in Hunlock Creek to visit and have pizza with son, Bob, Jr. and meet the new kittens, Otto and Echo.  Jr. spent Saturday at RIT in Rochester, NY, with his son, Tyler, and helped him celebrate his birthday.  Nice time for everyone.

I heard the week is to be quite nice.  Warm temperatures, but maybe some rain.  I hope you’re not bothered with the flu or the colds that are going around.

Happy Birthday wishes to Alex Aharonian, 11th; Lisa Kellogg Williams, 13th; Tommy Van Dyke and Krystal Vermiere, 14th; and Haley Latch, 15th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Hope you all have a nice Valentine’s Day with loved ones.  Hope you do something special for that special person.

I think that’s all I have to report for now.  Enjoy your week; it’s to be warm and nice.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 2, 2020 by Bob McGuireFebruary 2, 2020

NOTICE: THE 2020 LOPEZ MUG WILL BE THE “SULICK HALL”. I AM ORDERING THE AMOUNT WE NEED

TO FILL THE ORDERS. BE SURE YOUR ORDER IN.

The weather was all over the place for last week.  Monday was a low of 11 degrees, with flurries.  Tuesday and 1 degree and Wednesday was a whopping Zero.  Thursday, 4 degrees and Friday 18 degrees for a low with a high of 49 degrees.  That really was nice.  The wind was still present all the time.  Saturday we got the pouring rain with a little snow mix and the wind was wicked.  Sunday was a better day with some son and felt pretty good.  Heard the week is to be pretty good with no rain, snow or sleet.  But….Saturday and Sunday may be another weekend with a mix of snow and rain.  Hope not, but we have to take what Mother Nature gives us.  One lady I talked to during the week said she’s pretty sure we’ll get an early Spring.  I said I’d hold her to it.  See what happens.

St. Vladimir’s Church has halupki for sale.  They are available every second and fourth Sunday of the month, from Noon – 1 p.m.  Stop by the Church Hall and get yours before they are gone.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, spent Sunday at her home here.  Was a nice day for a ride and Church.

Winterfest is coming up on Saturday, February 15th at Camp Brule.  Check out the website sckiwanis.com and see what all will be happening during the day.  Of course, there will be the Polar Bear Plunge, along with many other things going on.  This is held snow or no snow.

Get well to Mary Lowden who had recent surgery.  I hear Ted is taking very good care of her.

Happy Birthday wishes for early February to Kyra Vinetelli and Brian Dendler, 1st; Dee Whatley, 4th; and Helen Amon, 5th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Us, along with Uncle “B” send special birthday greetings to Tyler McGuire as he celebrates on the 2nd.  That is Groundhog Day.  Do you think Phil will see his shadow and give us six more weeks of winter?  We can only hope he does not.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.

I think that’s he news for this time.  Enjoy your week; hope it’s all you want it to be.  If the weatherman is right, should be pretty nice.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on January 25, 2020 by Bob McGuireJanuary 25, 2020

Had some cold temperatures last week.  Went down 10 degrees on Friday and 8 degrees on Saturday, with snow.  Most of the week early temperatures were in the 20’s.  The wind was still with us.  That never seems to stop.  Last I heard it’s to warm up later in the week.  We can only hope.

FLASH…….THE 2020 Lopez Mug will be Sulick Hall, which was on Main Street.  If you are interested in RESERVING a mug, please let me know ASAP as the order will go out soon and we will only order as many as we need.  Price is still $20.  Contact me at the information below.

Winterfest will be coming up on February 15th at Camp Brule.  Gates open at 7 a.m., snow or no snow.  Vendors, plenty of food, ice fishing, ice skating, ice carvers, live auction and the famous Polar Bear Plunge.  This is sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Sullivan County and it’s a major fund raiser.  Support and help is needed to keep Winterfest profitable so they can continue helping everyone in Sullivan County.  Mark your calendar now and plan to go to Winterfest.

St. Vladimir’s Church has halupki for sale.  They will be available every second and fourth Sunday from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Church Hall.  They go fast, so stop by and get yours.  Pierogies are sold out, but they hope to make more soon.   Watch the Sully for up-dates.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Irene (Huray) Pequignot, 22nd; Mike Stavisky (Alex and Ginny’s son, down in sunny FL), 24th; Owen Evans and Scott Aharonian, 27th; Jennifer Pequignot-Laird, 28th and Lisa and Jason Burke, 30th.  Have a great day.

Happy Anniversary to Alex and Ginny Stavisky, 22nd; and Al and Jeannie Kapler, 23rd.    Enjoy and many more.

There may be other things going on around the County you might be interested in, so keep a watch on the Sully to find out.

Hope everyone is feeling well and not bothered with colds or that terrible flu virus going around.  Maybe this cold, freezing weather will kill all the flu bugs and leave us alone.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; should be lots of warm weather and no storms, unless the weather man changes it day by day.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I will be here next time, storm or no storm.

Boy!!  Mother Nature is sure being unpredictable now.  We had some

really nice weather last week, with temperatures in the 50’s with lots of

sunshine, but that wind was still whipping around.  The sun felt good, but it was quite muddy and “gushy” when walking in the yard.    I guess we are to get

more of the same for the week, but then we may be in for some colder

weather with some snow on the way.  I knew it couldn’t last forever.  Gotta

take whatever she gives us.  It’s “freaky” weather for January.

Gerry and Paula Weslowski, Allentown, spent the weekend with their daughter, Nina Weslowski and Brian McGuire.  The enjoyed dinner at Colley Pub on Friday evening and the chili/soup cook-off on Sunday afternoon.

Congratulations to Brian McGuire who took first place with his taco soup at the chili/soup cook-off, held on Sunday at the American Legion in Dushore.

Congratulations to the Sneidar family, and staff, as they celebrated their one year anniversary, over the weekend,  owning the Colley Pub.   Good luck for many more years.

St. Vladimir’s Church has halupki for sale.  They will be available every second and fourth Sunday at the Hall, from Noon to 1 p.m.  Stop by and get yours as they go fast.  They have sold out of pierogies, but hope to make more soon.  Keep your eye on the Sully for up-dates.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, visited his parents, Bob and JoAnn McGuire and his brother, Brian, on Friday.  Tyler left on Saturday to return to his studies at RIT, Rochester, NY.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Adel Bradshaw, 20th; and Alice Fedorchak and Jim Rouse, both on the 21st.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Ted and Linda Beaver, 12th; and Ted and Mary Lowden, 17th.  Have an enjoyable day.

B’s gang sends special birthday wishes to Tyler Higley as he celebrates on the 13th.  Have a good day, “Slick”.

I forgot a birthday at the end of 2019, so Happy Birthday to Ginny Stavisky who celebrated on the 31st.  Hope you had a nice day.

Has the flu bug gotten to you?  There is quite a bit of that going around, so if you don’t get it, you’re one of the lucky ones.  Get better soon if you have it.

Thank you to Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald who helped me get the Christmas decorations down from the Pavilion area.  The higher stuff is now up to the guys to take care of.  The weather was perfect Sunday to take care of this, before a snow fall comes.   No work bee as it was a spur of the moment decision when we were walking.   They did a good job carrying everything back up to the Pavilion to be put away sometime later.

There will probably be things going on in the County.  Watch the Sully for those things that will take place during the winter weather and there may be something you’d like to take part in.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week,  Get out and get some fresh air and sunshine while you can.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on January 14, 2020 by Bob McGuireJanuary 14, 2020

Happy New Year!!   Hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and hope the New Year is going well so far.  The weather did cooperate for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Was good for travel for those who were going to visit friends and family.  New Year’s Eve was a little dicey with some slick roads.  New Year’s Day was much better.  Flurries are flying around out there this Sunday as I am typing my news; it’s bitter cold and windy, but the sun is trying to help out, but not doing much.  Maybe more coming Tuesday into Wednesday, but don’t know how much.

Congratulations to Tyler McGuire who was named to the Dean’s list at RIT, Rochester, NY.  He is the son of Bob McGuire, Jr. Hunlock Creek, and grandson of Bob and JoAnn McGuire, Lopez.

St. Vladimir’s Church has halupki for sale.  Available the second and fourth Sundays of the month from 12 – 1 p.m., at the Hall.  Stop by and get yours; they go fast.  They are out of pierogies, but hope to replenish soon.

Cold weather is coming for sure and you need a Lopez hoodie..  We still have retro hoodies and tshirts for sale.  If interested, contact me at the info below.

Some birthday wishes for January.  Some are for early, some are for later.  Happy Birthday to Jim Craig, 1st, down there in sunny FL; Jeannie Kapler, Edith Tamburro, and Alex Stavisky, all on the 4th; Matt Weisbrod, 6th; Linda Santarelli, 7th;and John McDonald, Jr., 9th.  Hope you all had/have a nice day.

I know there will be some winter activities going on, so keep an eye on the Sully for those happenings.

Guess that’s the news from my snowy back yard.  Enjoy your week; might just be pretty nice.  If not, stay warm; drink something hot and bundle up if you have to go outside.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.  Comments, good or bad, are always welcome.

Lopez, PA Posted on January 4, 2020 by Bob McGuireJanuary 4, 2020

Well, here it is.  This is the last issue of the Sully for the year.  Hope you all had a good year.  Weather during this last week was in the low digits and still very windy.  I did hear that Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are to be really nice.  And….the week up to New Year’s.  Will those weather men be right?  We’ll have to wait and see.

Job Corps Center hosted a Christmas luncheon on Saturday.  The gym was decorated with a large, beautiful tree from Jugan’s Tree Farm.  The tables were festive with tiny trees and chocolate candies.   Santa stopped to visit with the kids.  This luncheon was for the Staff and their families, any kids who were not able to go home for Christmas and for CRC members. Kids got a treat from Santa and CRC members were also given a Christmas gift.   Food was delicious and plentiful; desserts were so good, made by Mad Bakers in Dushore.  Christmas music played while we ate and then there was a silent auction where the winners were announced.  Congratulations to Tom and Kathy Robbins and Wylie and Melanie Norton who were presented a plaque for their many years of involvement with Job Corps, their community and Sullivan County and beyond.  Those from Lopez who were able to go included Les and Kathy Isett, Molly and Clair Johnson, Dave and Ruth Kale, Mr. and Mrs. Saylor and Bob and I.  Everyone at Red Rock Job Corps Center is to be commended for making this a day to remember.   Merry Christmas!!

Safe travels to all who are going to visit relatives and friends over this Holiday season.  Seems there will be no storms, so that’s good right there.  I’ll have more when the next Sully comes out of visitors around the area.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy!  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and see you in 2020.  Merry Christmas to all and to all a great day!

Lopez, PA Posted on January 4, 2020 by Bob McGuireJanuary 4, 2020

Weather was nice off an on during the last week.  Had some higher temperatures with rain, but then Thursday it went down to 9 degrees.  That ever present wind and cold is what bothers most.  Hopefully, we’ll get some more nice weather.   As I type this Sunday evening, it doesn’t look good for Monday into Tuesday and the rest of the week looks pretty good.  Just have to wait and see what Mother Nature will bring us.  A little snow is ok, but the rain, sleet and snow is a no-no.  The rain did spoil some of the activities at Dushore on Saturday, but I’m sure there was enough for all to do, especially visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

Congratulations to Kyleigh McDonald who was inducted, on the 18th,  into the National Elementary Honor Society with the Agora home school program.  Way to go Kyleigh.  Keep up the good work.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale.  To order, call 570-928-8909 and leave a message.  Pick up will be on Sunday form 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Makes a nice meal for the Holidays.

TJ, Alison, and Jase, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, spent a couple of days at the home here and visited with his parents, Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace.

There probably are many more things that will be going on around the County in the next few weeks.  Keep an eye on the Sully to see what might be coming up that you’d be interested in.

Good luck hunters.  I guess there is still a little time left to get your deer.  I’ve seen a lot of turkeys in the field, but not many deer.

Guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week.  Get that last minute shopping done.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get your article in.  Thanks for reading and your comments.  I’ll be here next time.

Sure is winter weather now, with the cold temperatures we had during the week.  A lot of teens, with that never ending wind.  Sunday morning was down to a glorious 4 degrees, with ice on the tree branches.  Looking out the window, the sun was making them look all sparkly.  Did we hit the 50’s for Monday and Tuesday?  I doubt it, but will let you know next week.  The sun does look good……from inside.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, visited with Linda Baton at Darway on Sunday.  She also stopped to visit us while she was here.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies and halupki for sale.  To order, call 570-928-8909 and leave a message on the machine.  Order pick-up will be on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Makes a good meal for the Holidays coming up.

The kids are really enjoying the snow covered hill across the street from us.  They have a pretty good trail for their toboggans and come down pretty fast.  They also made a couple snowmen and even a snow fort.   Oh, to be young again and do those things.  My bones would never take that ride down the hill.

I guess there is still time for hunting, so good luck to those who have not gotten their deer yet.

Happy Birthday wishes to Dylan Amon, 13th; Noah Brown, 14th; and Carter Vermiere, 17th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

All the decorations in town are looking nice and festive.  I’ve heard some nice comments about the Monument with the manger and the trees that are lit so nice.  Also, the big star on the Pavilion looks good too.  Will be there for your enjoyment until Orthodox Christmas in January 2020.

You still have time to pay your 2020 Civic Association dues.  See Heather McDonald to do this.  Remember, NO Civic meetings now until March, weather permitting at that time.

I think that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week.  See if we get that warm weather.  I’ll take it, if we do.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.
