Lopez, PA Posted on June 14, 2017 by Bob McGuireJune 14, 2017

What a great weekend for a change.  Weather was perfect for outdoor activities, even after the brief shower early on Saturday.  Sunday was really warm.  I’ll take this rather than the cold, wind and rain we’ve been having, even though I know we need the rain.

Congratulations to all the Seniors who graduated on Friday evening, especially our Lopez kids Trevor Kinsey, Douglas Gilbert and Ellijo Higley.  Good luck in your future.

Bob and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited with his parents, Bob and JoAnn McGuire on Saturday.  Tyler stayed for a few days mini vacation.  Was a great time.   Played a lot of Skip-Bo in memory of his Grandma and Grandpa as they were avid players, along with other fun things that we did.  Weather was really nice.

St. Vlaidmir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.

Mother Galina and Sister Michele, Orthodox Monastery, Ellwood City, spent a few enjoyable days at St. Nicholas House on Church Street.  It was Sister Michele’s first time here so she got to see what Sullivan County is all about.  They especially enjoyed the Eagles Mere Book Store and the Lopez Flea Market.   She hopes to come back again soon.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, June 20, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, is spending a few days at her home on church Street and getting her flowers planted.

HINT:  “To make tick repellent, take 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil, 20 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil and 4 oz. of water.  Put in a spray bottle and shake well.  Spray on shoes, socks, pant cuffs, etc.  Safe for humans and animals.”  (Should be good for this time of year; the oils are a bit pricey, but if it works, all good.)

Happy Birthday wishes to Dana (Bling-Bling) Dempsey, 20th; Jack Caccia, 22nd, Cindy Stavisky, 23rd; Jean Woodford, 24th; Andy Matychak and Garrett Burke, 27th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Happy Anniversary to Jessie and Lisa (Beaver) Sperry as they celebrate on the 24th.  Congratulations and many more.

B’s gang sends special birthday wishes to Matt Karchner whose special day is the 28th.  Have a super day.

Lopez, PA Posted on June 9, 2017 by Bob McGuireJune 13, 2017

Kind of a rainy weekend again.  Little cool on Monday morning, but the sun is shining, so hopefully it will warm up.  Last I heard, it’s to be sporadic rain showers all week until Friday.  Guess the plants and flowers will like that.

Thanks to everyone who made our Memorial Day parade event a success.  Was nice to see so many folks come out despite the early rain and chilly temperatures.  Everyone who participated did a fine job.  The Potchatko girls made little bags to hand out to the kids that marched and also for the veterans marching.  The bag contained this note:  “On This Memorial Day –  Remember those who served before.  Remember those who are no more.  Remember those who serve today.  Remember them as we eat and play.  Remember our protectors who are not home today.  Remember them all on Memorial Dal.  Thank you for serving our County.”    Thank you to Mildred Fire Co. who did traffic control.  Was great not to have cars going in and out of town while the program took place.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.

Bob and I enjoyed the weekend, despite the rain, at the Wayne County Gem and Mineral Show in Canandaigua, NY, where UVBOB did the fluorescent mineral programs while we were there.   Good show and look forward to next year.

So, since we were not home, I don’t really know what was going on here or who might have been here for the weekend.   Did get one message on my machine that Joe and Diane Fanning, Landenberg, are spending a few days at their home on Church Street and doing some yard work; seems like a never ending job now for the summer, but much better than snow.

Don’t forget the flea market is this Saturday, the 10th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Pavilion.  Come, check it out, might be a treasure you’ll find.

Civic meeting on Tuesday, the 20th, at the Pavilion, at 6 p.m.

B’s gang sends Birthday wishes to Nina Weslowski, 14th; and to Marty Slocum, 16th.  Have a good day.

Happy Birthday to Nathan Kinsey as his special day is the 17th.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Bob and Lisa Burke as they celebrate on the 19th.  Congrats, many more, and have a great day.

HINT:   Here are a couple ways to kill ants.  “Grits, instant rice and cream of wheat can be sprinkled around plants.  The ant will eat a piece of whatever you sprinkle, drink water and the grain expands and kills the ant.   Also, fill a spray bottle with one part vinegar and one part water and spray on the plants.  The acid in the vinegar will kill the ants.”

Guess that’s it from here.  Enjoy your week, might be half decent; weather forecast never seems to be right, so check out each day as it arrives.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at  news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.  Keep the hints coming; I’ve had many good comments on them.

Lopez, PA Posted on May 11, 2017 by Bob McGuireMay 11, 2017

What a miserable week we’ve had.  From Monday to now as I type this news.  We were without power for many, many hours starting on Monday.  We also had no phones for a couple days.  The electric guys worked very diligently getting power restored as fast as they could.  There was a crew from Morristown, NJ,  that worked on Church Street and got our power restored.  Many were without power much longer, so guess we were one of the lucky ones.   All it does is rain, wind blows and it’s very cold.  Sunday the temperature never got up above 43 degrees; sure felt like March weather.  Last I heard, “maybe” by Tuesday it will start to warm up.  Think Mother Nature is trying to tell us something??  There was a good frost on Thursday when we hit 27 degrees.  Hopefully, the gardens and flower beds haven’t been done quite yet.   There were many generators running that  you could hear all over town.  Was hard to find someplace to get gas as most stations had no power so couldn’t pump gas.

Rev Mother Christophora and Mother Magdalena, Ellwood City, were coming on Thursday to spend a few days at St. Nicholas House.  We got in touch with them and said no power, no phones.  They were quite far this way so spent the night at a hotel in Williamsport.  Informed them on Friday that power was restored, so they came on to Lopez.  Left Lopez to do a retreat in Corning, NY, and the power had gone off again just as they were leaving, but did come back on when they returned.  So, they stayed until Sunday since all was good after all.   Was a different life style for a few days for everyone.

Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Church on Church Street will have liturgy on Sunday, May 28th, at 4 p.m.  There will blessing of the graves after liturgy.  All are welcome.  Mark your calendar now so you won’t forget.

Don’t forget the dumpster will be at the Township Building on Saturday, June 3rd, from 8 a.m. to Noon.  Watch the Sully for their ad.

Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, the 14th.  And, you can be a Mother of all kinds, not just biological, so hope you all have a fantastic day with loved ones.

Don’t forget Election Day is Tuesday, the 16th, so get out and do your civic duty and vote.  It’s our freedom and our right to vote.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 17th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  If we keep up with this weather, it will be at the Township Building.   Note change of day, due to Election Day on Tuesday.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Next time you boil or steam your veggies, don’t pour the water down the drain.  Use it to water you plants.  You’ll be amazed by how well your plants respond to “veggie soup”.”  (My mother-in-law did this not only with veggie water, but also with her dish water and contents of tea bags.  Maybe that’s why her plants did so well.)

Happy Birthday wishes to Cory McDonald, 15th; Marian Hubiak, 19th; Janet Weidner, 22nd.  Hope you all have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Tim and Bobbi Jo Brown as they celebrate on the 21st.  Congrats and have a super day.

Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book for this day (Sunday) 1974 is about the same weather as we’re having right now.

Guess that’s the news from cold Lopez.  Hopefully we’ll see the sun again soon.   Have news call me at 570-928-9238, mail me, see me, or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on May 4, 2017 by Bob McGuireMay 4, 2017

Will the wind ever stop blowing and give us some nice days?  Saturday was miserable.  Sunday wasn’t quite so bad.  We did have some rumbles of thunder, lights blinking and a few sprinkles; then it was over and later the sun peeked out.  Don’t know the weather for the week, but guess we’ll have some.  Wait and see what each day brings and go accordingly.

St. Vladimir’s Church will have a Halupki dinner on Sunday, May 7th, Noon to 4 p.m.  Eat in or take out; held at the Church Hall.  Nice early Mother’s Day dinner.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

I had a nice phone chat with Alice Fedorchak on Friday.  She sounds really good; is enjoying herself, has lots of friends, and plays Bingo.  She said to tell all her Sullivan County friends “happy Spring and Summer”.

Third marking period Honor Roll:  Distinguished honors: Kyler Burke, Aaron Kinsey, Jacob Williams; and Trevor Kinsey.   Honors:  Paige Burke and Noah Brown.  Congratulations to all for a job well done.

Dumpster will be at the Township Building on Saturday, June 3rd, from 8 a.m. to Noon.  Check the Sully to get more information.

HINT:  “Put cornmeal around your plants in the garden.  Keeps the weeds from growing.”

With the nice weather, I see folks working on their gardens and flower beds.  I think the pollen count is high as everyone seems to be affected with allergies.  Seems like everything is coming out earlier than last year.  Even the bear have been around earlier.  He was last seen crossing the creek behind a house on Main Street.

Happy Birthday wishes to Diane Fanning, 9th; Elizabeth Spinosa, 10th; Xander Kapler and Kessler Gilbert, 12th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

B’s gang sends Get Well wishes to Marty Slocum who recently had surgery.  He’s doing well and hope he continues to improve.  Ma and Pa also send speedy recovery wishes.

More activities will start taking place with the summer coming soon (I hope it is anyway).   Check the Sully to see what’s going on.

Election Day is coming up on Tuesday, the 16th.  Get out and vote.

Since Election Day is the 16th, the next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 17th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion, unless it’s really bad weather; will be in the Township Building.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever it is you may do.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Sullivan County hit by big storms.  Lopez not spared.  I write with the power of a generator.  Power went down Monday 7:30 pm and phones went also.  It was put on 10:38 pm Tuesday and then shut off Wednesday after lunch but still have phones.  An apple tree on Lilac Lane pulled over the lines and that in turn pulled the pole on the corner causing it to break. So we have no power till the pole is replaced and lines hooked up.  The Sullivan Review is also in the dark and will be late in coming out.  Our new Lopez advertising sign got hit bad.

Lopez, PA Posted on April 28, 2017 by Bob McGuireApril 28, 2017

Sunday was a beautiful day; much better than Saturday.  We had temperatures in the high 60’s with sunshine and a warm breeze.  I would hope it would stay that way.  We did have over two inches of rain Thursday into Friday.

Got the following e-mail from Fr. Hendershot, Priest at St. Vladimir’s Church, to share.  This was over the Easter Holiday.

So the guests at the Saint Nicholas house, Church Street, were as follows. Patty Martinez (sang alto) and husband Robert Martinez and their 3 children;  Peter (helped with procession) , Lupita (sang alto) and Olivia (sang soprano) Dana Kuhn (directed the choir and sang soprano) and husband Michal (sang bass)

We are thankful for the help they gave with the singing of the services. We were blessed with beautiful  singing for the services of Holy Friday and the feast of Pascha.

These two families were very grateful to have been able to stay at the St. Nicholas house, and they loved the fact that they were able to walk to the church.  Also they really enjoyed the fact that the Lopez creek is right behind the house.

Also visiting Lopez were the Hendershot family members. Son Nicholas and wife Claudia were visiting from Virginia with our grandsons  Gabriel and Michael who were excited to be altar boys. Our son David came from Martinsburg West Virginia, and Daughter Laura came with her boyfriend Bobby.  Tuesday we are expecting our other daughter Elizabeth with her husband Fr. Noah and their 8 children.  When we have family and friends visiting, they love going to Ricketts Glenn State Park to walk the path with the waterfalls.  “Lopez is such a lovely place” we heard over and over.

Mark your calendar now.  There will be a halupki dinner at St. Vladimir’s Church Hall on Sunday, May 7th, Noon to 4 p.m.  Eat In or Take Out.  This is a good fund raiser for the Church so do stop in for a good meal.  Could be an early Mother’s Day dinner.

The Lopez Civic Association would like to extend thanks to Mildred American Legion for the generous donation of their Bingo supplies for our use.  It is greatly appreciated and will be used.

Don’t forget…..street sweeper will be in town on May 1st between 6:30 and 7 a.m. so be prepared for noise and dust.

Watch the Sully for info on the dumpster that will be here on June 3rd, 8 a.m. to Noon, Township Building.  Ad will tell you what you can and cannot take.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, and granddaughters Haley Latch, St. Georges, DE and Rachel Ruggerio, Elkton, MD, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  Diane said it was nice to see no snow this time.  The girls even put on their swim suits and spent a couple hours at the creek.  Said the water wasn’t bad at all.

I see Cory McDonald came in from Rhode Island to visit family and friends over the weekend.

“Tent City” had some activity over the weekend as some of the Borick’s were in to enjoy the nice weather.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Paige and Kyler Burke, May 1st; JoAnn Day, 2nd; Ryan Dempsey and Ted Lowden, 7th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Laundry pre-soak spray:  1 cup water, 1 cup liquid Wisk and 1 cup ammonia.  Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle.  Spray liberally on soiled areas of clothing.  Let saturate; scrub and toss into the washer.”

The bear has been seen around town.  It was on Main Street, Church Street, Factory Road and at Lopez Winery.  It’s a pretty good sized one too.

With the nicer weather, folks will be able to work on their gardens and flower beds.  And……there’s always lawn mowing to do.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

NOTE:   Change in date and place for the next Civic meeting.  Due to Election Day on Tuesday, May 16th, Civic meeting will be held on Wednesday, the 17th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  In case of really cool, bad weather, it will be in the Township Bldg.  Let’s hope it’s real warm and will stay around for the duration of summer.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever; should be pretty nice from what I’ve heard.  But, you know how that goes.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get in in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on April 20, 2017 by Bob McGuireApril 20, 2017

Hope you all had a Blessed Easter holiday.  The weather was just great for Sunday with sunshine and warm breeze.  The rain held off until about 6:39 p.m. and then we had a pretty good shower.  So, hope you all got in your activities for the day.
Don’t forget, there will be street sweeping on Monday, May 1st, between 6:30 and 7 a.m. so be prepared for noise and lots of dust.  Also, watch the Sully for dumpster day in town as to what you can take and can’t take.  That will be June 3rd.
Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, along with Marty Slocum, New Albany, and Bob and JoAnn McGuire, enjoyed Sunday with Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski.  Was so nice to sit outside at the picnic table to have Easter dinner and visit.
Easter guests of Irene Huray were Irene Pequignot, Shawn, crystal, misty & Dylon Pequignot; Kevin Pequignot ,Rachelle & Stefano disalvo, Alyssa Pequignot & Freind David; Jennifer, Shawn, serenity& alek Laird & Elexus Dunkleberger; Mickey & Karen Bednar.
Sitting here Sunday evening and happened to look out the window and saw a beautiful, bright rainbow.
Get well wishes to Mary Lowden who just had hand surgery.  Hope it’s much better and will be back in use soon.
TJ Lowden, Marlton, NJ, spent a couple of days over Easter at his home on Church Street.
HINT:  “Uses for salt include using it to prevent wicker furniture from turning yellow.  Also, oven cleaning can be made much easier if you sprinkle salt in the oven before you start.”
Looks like Tim Brown and his ankle are coming along nicely, but still has some time to go before putting any weight on the foot.  Hopefully, it’ll be better in no time and he’ll be on the go once again.
St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.  Almost put my number again.  I did that a few weeks ago and got a call that they wanted to order.  The lady said that was the number in the paper, so I gave her the right number to call.    I do make a mistake now and then.
Not a lot of news to report, but with the nicer weather finally getting here (maybe), there will be folks coming in to their summer homes and cabins and getting things ready for the season.   Folks are getting gardens and flower beds ready for planting, so that’s a good sign.   And, I finally got to see a couple of robins the other day.   The birds are enjoying the feeders and just hope the bear won’t be around to give us trouble and do a lot of damage again.  Will be time to move them to higher ground; any more you can’t just take them in at night; they’re here during the day too.   They are nice to look at and watch, but they can be terrible mess makers.
Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; last I heard, it’s to be a pretty nice start of the week.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.

OH OH! LOOKS LIKE THE DRONE FLEW AWAY

Weekend wasn’t the best; Sunday turned out to be the better day with temperatures in the high 60’s.    Mother Nature still blessed us with a light coating of snow on Friday.   She can’t seem to get her head straight and give us warm and sunshine.  I did hear the week’s weather is to be pretty good; may have changed it already; haven’t seen the weather yet today, Sunday.  Guess I’ll wait and see what the week brings.

Street sweeper will be in Lopez on May 1st, starting 6:30 – 7 a.m., so be prepared for dust and noise.

Dumpster will be at the Township Building on Saturday, June 3rd, 8 a.m. to Noon.  Watch for the ad in the Sully as what you can take and not take.

Tax Collector will be at the Township Building on Thursday, April 20th, 9 a.m. to Noon, for those wishing to pay in person; they can also be mailed in.

Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, April 18th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

  1. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Bob and I, along with Brian, Bob, Jr. and Tyler traveled to Cobleskill, NY, on Saturday, to attend the funeral of my Dad, Ed Davis, who passed away at 98 years young.  Over 50 family members from PA, NY, MI, TX, and VA were there to pay their respects and say so long.  Funeral was held at the United Methodist Church, Cobleskill, with burial in Dorloo Cemetery.  Great grandson, Brian, was one of the pall bearers.  He will certainly be missed; he touched many lives.

Here are some tips for Spring cleaning (if we get Spring):
Use a butter knife and a micro fiber cloth to clean registers.  Put the kids bath toys in the dishwasher to clean.  Use rubber gloves to remove pet hair from furniture.  Put Christmas wrap in a see-through garment bag for storage.

Happy Birthday to Roseanne Lukachik, 18th; Holly Ann Sperry, 20th; Jon-Paul Matychak, 23rd; Katherine Kapler, 25th; Mickie Mowery, 26th; David Spinosa, 28th; and Ken Kline and Abby Matychak, 30th.  Hope you all have a good day.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  April 9, 1979 – Clear, cold, rain,  30 degrees and 1 1/2 inches of snow.   On April 9, 2017, we had sun, light breeze, NO snow and 60+ degrees.  I’ll take that any day over the snow and cold.

I think folks are really ready to get into their gardens and flower beds, if the weather would cooperate.  There are some who have flowers starting to push through the ground; then the frost and snow comes and kills them.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; it’s gotta get better soon, I hope.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Wow!!  Friday and Saturday were terrible as far as weather goes.  Rain, wind, cold, we had it all.  Sunday was a much better day and the sun sure looked good.  Hopefully, the week will be much better.  I’m so done with cold, wind and snow.  I think we should all contact Mother Nature and let her know what we really want.

Bob and I spent the weekend in Johnson City, NY, at the Southern Tier Gem and Mineral Show, where UVBOB did the fluorescent mineral programs while we were there.  There was an amazing number of adults and kids who attended the show this year and everyone did very well.  We look forward to next year’s show.   So, since I was gone, I don’t know who was around, who came home, or who went away.  I’ll catch you next week when you let me know.

Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend.  Weather wasn’t too bad; could have been warmer, but we’ll take what we get.  It wasn’t as warm as first predicted and the week is to be rainy.   Quite a lot of the snow seems to be going away so maybe we’ll get some nice, warm weather.  Hopefully, no more storms.

The 48th annual Che-Hanna Gem and Mineral show was over the weekend and turned out to be really nice.  Was at the Wysox Volunteer Fire Hall this year, so didn’t know how that would work.  Turned out to be a good attendance at the show.  Saw some Sullivan County folks there also.  Hope everyone had an enjoyable time and we look forward to next year’s show.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

I know there are probably things going on around the county, so keep a check on the Sully for that.   With the nicer weather coming, folks are probably checking out the seed and plant catalogs to get ready for flower beds and gardens.   Some things may have already been started indoors to do outdoors later.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans are.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at

Lopez, PA Posted on March 25, 2017 by Bob McGuireMarch 25, 2017

Well, did we have a winter storm or what!!!   Monday started out at four below zero and cold.  Tuesday came the snow storm with blizzard conditions, very windy and cold.  Snowed all day, drifted and finally quit about ten p.m.   Every time you’d talk to someone during the day, they’d say, “yep, still snowing.”  We ended up with 28 inches of the white stuff, with lots of drifts.  Kids had three days off from school while the clean-up took place.  They enjoyed playing in the snow.  Lots of businesses were also closed.   Friday was minus one and sunny and did warm up during the day.   Saturday and Sunday the Mike McDonald family enjoyed tobogganing on the hill.  Took a while to make a nice path, but once they did, it went fast.  Saturday and Sunday were a little better with temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s, with some snow melt.   So……….are we done?  I sure hope so.  The robins are lost; the birds are really feeding at the feeders; the deer and turkey have a hard time getting through the snow.   Monday, the 20th is the first day of Spring, so let’s get some sunshine and warmth here and get rid of this stuff.  It is to warm up during the week, but don’t like what I heard for Friday.  Hope it’s wrong.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  Had quite a time getting to their house, but finally managed to get shoveled and snow blown out.  Molly got buried in the snow a few times.  Was quite an exhausting time but still glad to be here to take care of the amount of snow they witnessed.

Get well wishes to Tim Brown who had the misfortune to fall during the storm and fracture his ankle pretty badly.  He was plowing, got out of the truck to do something; was going back to get in the truck, his feet went out from under him and he fell.  He managed to get back in the truck and drive to the township shed; went to Sayre where he had surgery the next day.  He’s all wired, plated and screwed back together but does have about eight weeks recovery time.  Hope he’s well on his way.

Hope to see you at the Che-Hanna R&M Club show this weekend.  It’s held at the Wysox Fire Hall on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Lots of educational displays and dealers with their “wares”, along with the mini-mine for the kids and fluorescent programs by UVBOB.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Civic meeting on Tuesday, April 18th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

Thursday, April 20th, from 9 a.m. to Noon, the tax collector will be at the Township Bldg. for those of you wishing to pay your taxes.  They can also be sent in the mail.

Happy Birthday to Irene Risser, 28th; Heather McDonald and Trevor Kinsey, 30th.  Have a nice day.

Hope the flu bug has finally left and folks are feeling much better.

HINT:  “Brown sugar facial scrub:  A scrub is good to do about once a month to remove dead skin and bacteria build up in pores and remove excess oil from the skin.  Brown sugar does just as well as expensive products and will definitely result in a clearer and smoother complexion.”

Guess that’s it from the winter wonderland of Lopez.  Enjoy your week; it has to get better.  Have news call 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on March 17, 2017 by Bob McGuireMarch 17, 2017

Another cold, windy, snowy few days.  We had six inches of snow on Friday.  Saturday morning it was five degrees with snow and wind.  Sunday morning it was .5 degrees and cold.  The temperatures didn’t get up past twenty during that time.   Will have to wait for next week as to what get Tuesday into Wednesday.  Predictions are for many inches of snow; we’ll see if it’s right this time and we get the “storm” of the winter season.  Would be nice not to get any at all and prove them all wrong, but don’t think that will happen.  Just gotta go with the flow and take what we get.  And, to think the first day of Spring is on the 20th.

Looking out her picture window early Monday morning, Heather McDonald saw a bald eagle flying around.  I’ve heard reports from others that have seen one also.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-9238.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, spent Sunday with Bob, JoAnn, Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski.  They all helped Bob, Sr. celebrate his birthday.  They also enjoyed a walk up to icicle cave.  Was Tyler’s first time there and it was 50 years ago this time that his Dad, Bob, Jr. was in that same cave and had his picture taken for a post card.  This time, with the warm weather we had, there were only stubs of icicles, so wasn’t as impressive.  But, it was a fun time trekking up and back and Tyler thought it was a cool place.

Mark your calendars now.  Jean Foust, Colley Township Tax Collector, will be at the Township Building, in town, on Thursday, April 20th, from 9 a.m. to Noon for those of you wishing to pay your taxes.   You can also send them to her in the mail.  Remember, it’s April and not March 20th.

Happy Birthday to Elizabeth Weisbrod, 115th; Gianna Mae DiRocco, 16th; Don Risser and Sherilyn Dendler, 17th; Joe Tabor, 18th;and Aaron Kinsey, 21st.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Joe and Tina Tabor as they celebrate on the 15th.

B’s gang sends Happy Birthday wishes to Steph Putnam, 17th; Kristen Putnam, 18th; and Lori Higley, 19th.  Have a super day.

HINT:  “Add a few drops of corn oil to your pets’ food to prevent hair balls from forming.  The thick oil helps the fur pass through the animal’s system much quicker and easily.”

Keep a watch on the Sully for events going on around the County that you may be interested in.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, you may be trying to dig out if we get “all that snow”.  Hopefully it will be the last, but never can tell what Mother Nature has in store.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see  me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time, and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on March 10, 2017 by Bob McGuireMarch 10, 2017

WOW!!  What a “brutal” (as Kurt Aaron says) weekend.  Saturday was 8 degrees with flurries and VERY windy and cold.  Only got to about 20 degrees all day.   On Sunday it was MINUS two early in the morning and did manage to get up to 20 maybe (one time said 30, but that was the sun on the thermometer).  It was also really cold, but not quite as windy.  Still see lots of turkeys in the fields.  Birds have been coming and emptying the feeders; haven’t seen any deer lately.  Let’s see what the weather does during the week; some reports are warmer and nice; some reports are snow coming and not so nice.

ALERT:   Sunday, the 12th is the time to turn your clocks AHEAD one hour.   Sounds good to me.  Will be longer days and not seem like we have to go to bed at 7 p.m. as it’s so dark.  Hopefully, the weather will change and it will get nice and stay that way.  The geese have pretty much been coming back, so maybe that’s good too.

Glad to hear that Carmela Walosin is feeling much better and hope she continues to improve.  She is glad to be back at home.

Hope everyone that has been bothered with colds and flu bug are getting better and back to normal.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.   They are good any time of year; not just for holidays.

HINT:  “Instead of using a dryer sheet, ball up one or two sheets of aluminum foil and toss it in the dryer.  It removes the static electricity from your clothes and one can last up to a year.”  (The only thing is, there is nothing to make the clothes smell nice and I don’t think it will really work.  Let me know; I don’t have a dryer.)

Happy Birthday to Janelle Day and Lyle Weidner, both on the 9th; Ruby Malkemes and Tally Rose (McGee) Tierney, 10th; Monte Gulich and Julien Bonner, 11th; Bob McGuire, Sr., 13th; and Amy Simmons, our Post Mistress, 14th.  Hope you all have a really nice day.

I’m sure there are still events going on around the County that may interest you.  Keep a check on the Sully to find out.

Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club 48th annual show coming up the end of March.  Check it out on Face Book.  Click on events and then click on Che-Hanna and it will give you the info you need.  Or, call Bob at the number below for information.

It was nice to visit Chris Cokos and Leo McDonald in Dushore one day last week.  They both look well.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  March 5, 1974 – warm rain and 58 degrees.  Now, I’ll take that over what we had for March 5, 2017.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week and let’s hope the weatherman is right and give us nice weather.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Yep,  still coming down.  Road crew doing their job.

Well, our nice weather lasted until Saturday. We had good temperatures all week in the 60’s.  I did some laundry on Thursday and Friday and hung them out on the line and they actually dried really well.  The geese have been flying in huge flocks, so hope that’s a good sign.  Then, on Saturday we got a heavy rain storm with fog, thunder, lightning and lots of wind.  We were very lucky we had no problems, while other places had lots of damage and maybe a tornado touch down.  Sunday was very cold and windy, but the week is to warm up again.  Strange weather for this time of year.  We’ve been seeing twenty plus turkeys making their way through the cemetery.  Guess they are braver now that hunting is done.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

The Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club show is coming up the end of March.  Check it out.  Go to Face Book and click on events.  Then, click on Che-Hanna and see what’s going on.

Keep an eye on the Sully for up-coming events going on in the County.  Pretty soon, it will be warmer weather and more things around the area.

HINT:  “Coffee is full of nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial to soil.  Some people include it in their compost pile.  If you want the most out of your coffee, pour the grounds on areas where you want more grass or flowers to grow.”

Happy Birthday to our son, Bob Jr. as he celebrated on the 26.  Happy birthday to Keene Vinetelli, March 5th; and Bethany Dendler, 6th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  February 26, 1978 it was clear, cold, with snow and 14 degrees.  I think ours was a little better.

Get well wishes to all of you who are sick with colds and the flu bug.  I did hear there is a bad flu going around and keeping kids out of school for days.  Hope you all get to feeling better.  If the weather wouldn’t flip flop so much, maybe everyone would feel better.

Guess that’s it from this frigid back yard.  Enjoy your week; more sunshine and warmth on the way (I hope).  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Gee, we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.  Temperatures in the mid to high 50’s with warm sunshine, and a nice breeze.  It was still 54 degrees after 5 p.m. on Sunday night.   I heard that my neighbor heard some geese Sunday evening, hopefully flying North.  Hope that’s a good sign.  Last report is that the week is to be really nice.  I’ll take it.  Just hope we don’t get a “doozie” of a storm in March.  That would not be good.

Hope all of you who attended Winter Fest at Camp Brule over the weekend had an enjoyable time, despite the warmer weather.  With so many activities going on, I’m sure everyone did well.

Second marking period.  Distinguished Honor Roll:  Kyler and Paige Burke; Aaron Kinsey and Jacob Williams.  Honor Roll:  Noah Brown and Trevor Kinsey.  Congratulations to all.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent some time with her daughter, Irene Pequignot in Linden.

Rev Mother Christophora, Orthodox Monastery, Ellwood City, spent a really nice weekend at St. Nicholas House, Church Street.  Weather was sure in her favor for travel her and back.

HINT:  “Have a blemish you need to get rid of over night? Put a dab of honey on the blemish and cover it with a Band-Aid and the honey’s natural antibacterial properties will clean out the bacteria by morning.”

Keep a watch on the Sully to see what may be coming up in Sullivan County that you might be interested in.  There’s always one thing or another to keep folks busy.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  I’m sure I’ll see some out sweeping the junk and dust off the road……hopefully not getting ready for another storm.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 15, 2017 by Bob McGuireFebruary 15, 2017

Hope you all had a nice weekend and a nice Valentine’s Day with your loved ones.  Weather wasn’t too bad.  Did have some heavy rain on Tuesday, with the temperatures in the 40’s; had a snowstorm on Thursday that put down 7-10 inches of snow and the wind blew the snow into drifts that measured 16 inches in places.  As I write my news on Sunday evening, we had some good rain and some sleety rain during the day; don’t know what’s coming over night, but someone said another storm.  Have to wait and see.  There was enough snow after Thursday’s storm to go tobogganing on the hill across the street.  Kids and their Dad had fun doing that.  By Sunday the snow was mostly gone because of the rain.

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and many, many friends of Mrs. Lucy Sick who recently passed away.  She was a joy to know; she had an awesome smile and was a many talented lady.  She will be missed.   Funeral will be held Saturday from St. Basil’s Church with Rev. Carr, Rev. McLaughlin and Rev. Rojas.

Winter Fest will be this weekend at Camp Brule.  Check the Sully for details and see what might interest you.  Also, to check for other events that may be going on.

Happy Birthday wishes to Shawn Laird, 15th; Khloie Bahr, 19th; Clair Johnson II, 20th; Armond Spinosa, 23rd; Jacob Williams, 23rd, Bob McGuire, Jr., 26; and John Borick, 29th and that day isn’t even on the calendar.  Hope you all have a good day.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Sprinkle corn starch into tough knots to help loosen and untangle them; works good on shoe laces.”  “Cut yourself shaving?  Just swipe some chap stick over the cut to stop the constant bleeding.  No more tissue squares.”

Guess that’s about it.  Enjoy your week, even if you have to get out and so a little shoveling; the air feels good.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at    news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Well, we can’t really complain too much about the weather.  It’s been pretty nice, other than a few snow showers.  Last I heard, the weather next week is to be “iffy” on Tues. and Wed. with some icy mix, turning to snow showers.  Then, the 12th to the 18th is to be above normal temperatures.  That a little far in advance, so we’ll see.  Maybe Phil, the Groundhog, will be wrong and we’ll have an early Spring.   Time will tell, but I’d go for that.

Sympathy from the community to the relatives, family and many, many friends of Mrs. Lucille Sick who passed away on January 31st.  Such a pleasant lady, such a good friend to all and she did so many things for her community.  She will certainly be missed.

I imagine there were lots of Super Bowl parties on Sunday for the big game.  We don’t do football, so no party, didn’t watch the game, and don’t even know who won.  At least the weather was good for travel.

St. Vladimir’s has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes to Lisa Kellogg Williams, 13th; Tommy Van Dyke and Krystal Vermiere, 14th; Haley Latch, 15th; Allison Lowden and Tim Brown, 17th.   Hope you all have a nice day.

Bob Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited on Saturday with Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski.  All had a good time and hope to get together again soon.   We all congratulated Tyler on making the President’s List at Lake-Lehman Jr./Sr. High School, where he is in 10th grade.

HINT:  “Recipe for cough syrup for these winter days when you get a cold or sore throat.  1/2 cider vinegar, 1/2 cup water, 1 tsp. cayenne pepper, 3 TBSP honey.  Mix all ingredients well and administer by teaspoonful.”

Keep an eye on the Sully for up-coming events around the County you might want to take part in.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; may not be too bad.  Hope you all have a great Valentine’s Day with your “sweetie” and do something special.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Another nice weekend.  Couldn’t ask for better weather for this time of the year.  Guess it’s to stay like this most of the week, other than being cold.  But, I bet Puxatawney Phil will probably still see his shadow on the 2nd.  We’ll still have six weeks of winter, whether he does or not.

Sympathy from the community to the family of Dorothy (Bushofsky) Stanley who passed away on the 19th.  She had a summer home in Lopez.  Funeral and burial will be in Florida, where she resided.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

The 48th annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show is coming up on Saturday and Sunday, March 25 and 26.  Check out information under events on Face Book.  Lots of good things and this year it’s in a new place.  It will be held at the Wysox Volunteer Fire Company.

I know there will be things going on around the County that I’m not really aware of, so check the Sully for those things you may be interested in.  I know the Kiwanis Winterfest is coming up in February with lots of things there to see and do.  Check out their website:  sckiwanis.com to see what’s happening.

Don’t think the toboggan slide will be up and running this year.  I think it’s been a little too warm to have the lake frozen to the proper depth of the ice to make the slide.  Don’t know for sure, so watch the Sully on this.

HINT:  “Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants.  They eat it, take it home and can’t digest it so it kills them.  May take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it does work and doesn’t bother pets or small children.”  (Sometimes there are lots of ants, sometimes none are seen.)

Happy Birthday to Kyra Vinetelli and Brian Dendler, both on February 1st; Dee Whatley, 4th; Helen (Maximiak) Amon, 5th; and Alex Aharonian, 11th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Uncle “B”, Pop-Pop and Gramma send special birthday wishes to Tyler McGuire, who will turn 16 on the 2nd.  Have a great day.  Wow!!   Times flies and now it will be getting a license and starting to drive.

I think that’s all for now.  Enjoy your week; should be pretty nice.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Still having some pretty nice weather.  Had temps in the 50’s over the weekend, but did have some good rain a couple of times, so things got pretty muddy.  Don’t know if we’ll get rain or snow Monday and Tuesday; have to wait and see how the storm tracks.   Lots were out over the weekend; didn’t even wear a jacket; would be nice to last, but I don’t think so.  Later in the week is to get nice again, so we’ll see about that.  Gotta take whatever we get.

B’s gang sends sympathy to the Howard Putnam family on the passing of Gpa Putt on the 17th.  Was such a nice man and he will be missed.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Keep a watch on the Sully for activities coming up in the County.  Something you may want to go to see or to take part in.  There’s always something to keep one occupied.

Happy Birthday wishes to Owen Evans and Scott Aharonian, 27th; Jennifer Pequignot-Laird, 28th; and Lisa and Jason Burke, 30th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.  Dump out the hot water, but don’t dry the cup.  Next, add your ingredient (shortening, peanut butter, etc) and watch how easily it comes right out.”

“If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, place the sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two.  It unseals easily.”

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy the wonderful week coming up.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Had some on and off nice weather/cold weather/snow showers/sunshine; no we need some nice, warm weather.  Temperature early Sunday morning was only 10 degrees, but did warm up during the day and the sun sure helped.  On a walk on Saturday, just up the road from our house, we watched as 22 turkeys came up from the creek and headed for the woods.  That’s the most we’ve seen.  Usually 12 or so is a lot, but they were sure out that day.  I hear the weather is to warm up in the 40’s and low 50’s during the week and especially on Saturday.

If anyone is interested in helping to remove the Christmas decorations from the monument area, we can use your help.  We’re meeting at the Pavilion on Saturday, the 22nd, at Noon.  Shouldn’t take too long and the more help, the better.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-9011.

There is no Civic meeting for the month of January.

Check out the Lopez Civic Association items for sale on Face Book.  Go to Face Book and click on “Search”.  Type in Lopez Civic Association and you will see the new, retro t-shirts, koozies, and hoodies.  Hoodies are especially nice for the colder weather.

Don’t think there’s a lot going on around town; haven’t seen many out and about.  Hopefully, with the warmer weather, more folks will get out.

Happy Birthday wishes to Jim Rouse, 21st.  Special birthday wishes to Alice Fedorchak from all her Sullivan county friends as she celebrates on the 21st.  Irene Pequignot, 22nd; and Mike Stavisky (Florida), 24th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Alex and Ginny Stavisky, 22nd; Al and Jeannie Kapler, 23rd.   Congratulations and have a super day.

Got the following e-mail to share:

While visiting their hometown of Evesham Township, NJ, Ted and Mary Lowden attended the annual awards banquet of the Evesham Township Fire Department. Ted has been a member of that organization which consists of about 140 members, both career and volunteer for 41 years. They respond to thousands of fire and EMS incidents each year in a densely populated suburban area.

Along with about 100 members in attendance, local government elected leaders and representatives from surrounding emergency service communities attended the affair. This year the catered affair took place at Paris Catering located in Berlin, NJ. At the conclusion of the awards dancing and cocktails help the members celebrate for several hours.

The awards banquet is held each year in January and serves a platform for celebrating the dedication and successes of its members for the prior year. This year in addition to awards to members in pf both the fire and EMS divisions for their individual commitments to successful achievement of emergency service training and education, a half dozen awards for saving lives for CPR were issued, a meritorious service award for child delivery and medal of valor for life saving were bestowed upon members.

Additional awards are bestowed upon the station responder of each of the five divisions within the FD with one of those then selected as the overall Department Responder of the Year. All awards are based upon merit and in cases as necessary an independent investigation of the fact related to the nomination of the award.

HINT:  “Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress.  Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose.  Place the pin in the seam of the slacks and static is gone.”

I guess that’s about it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you plan to do.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Brrrrrrr!!!!   It was a cold weekend.  Saturday the temperature was down to 4 degrees and only went up to 15 degrees during the day.  Sunday was 2 degrees and didn’t warm up much at all.  It was very windy and cold both days.  Warm-up is coming, but don’t really know when.   Heard some nasty weather may be coming our way Tuesday into Wednesday; have to wait and see.  We’ve been very lucky.  Did you see the news on TV and what the South and West got hit with.  Sad day for all those folks.

Sympathy from the community to the Kline family on the loss of Elaine on December 24th.  Funeral will be at the convenience of the family.  She will be missed.

Hope all of you who celebrated Orthodox Christmas over the weekend had a nice day.  Sorry I failed to mention this in last week’s news, but did want to mention it now.

Haven’t seen many people out and about so don’t know who’s at their cabins or where they are.  Probably hunkered down at home keeping warm and reading a good book.   I do see a few hunters every now and then coming from the woods; they never seem to have anything, but they got some exercise.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Crystal Pequignot, 12th; and Adel Bradshaw, 20th.  Hope you have a nice day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Tyler Higley as he celebrates on the 13th.  Hope it’s great.

Happy Anniversary to Ted and Linda Beaver, 12th; and to Ted and Mary Lowden, 17th.  Have a good day.

HINT:  “To make easy deviled eggs, put cooked yolks in a zip lock bag.  Seal, mash until they are all broken up.  Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing and mixing thoroughly.  Cut the tip of the bag, squeeze mixture into the egg white.  Just throw the bag away when done……easy clean up.”  (I know some who have tried this and it does work, but I’m “old school” and still like to do it with the pastry blender and mix the ingredients in myself.)

Guess that’s the winter news for now.  If you get out, be sure to bundle up to prevent frost bite and walk briskly to and from where you are going.  Better days ahead…….I hope.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and will have a great 2017 year.  Weather was pretty nice over the Holidays for travel.  Did have some snow and there was lots of toboggan riding on the hill across from us.  Looked like a good time.   Hopefully the weather will stay nice for a while, but guess we have to get ready for whatever comes our way.

Congratulations to Jason and Dorothy Bahr on the birth of their baby, Lillie Ann, who was born on December 23rd.  She weighed 6.7 lbs.  She has a sister, Khloie, and all are doing well.

Don and Irene (Kravitz) Risser recently spent a few days in town.  They visited with Mary Kravetz and they all had lunch at Jolly Trolley in Dushore with Annabelle Kravetz of Mildred.  Irene just returned from a trip that included five days in Rome, Italy.  Then she boarded a cruise ship westward bound across the Atlantic to Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  Port stops along the way included Florence, Italy; ports in Tuscany and Provence, France; Barcelona, Spain, the island of Majorca and the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  Please call 570-928-1099 to order yours.

Cory McDonald was here from Rhode Island to spend time over the Holidays with family and friends.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire, Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski; Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire all spent Christmas Eve with Mike and Lola Mattie in Forty Fort.  Also there was Georgia, Michael and Mcguire Martin; Casey Martin and friend, Ricky.  All had a great time together.

Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski spent Christmas Day with her parents in Allentown.  The day after Christmas Bob, Jr. and Tyler, Hunlock Creek, spent the day with us, Brian, Nina and Marty Slocum from New Albany also stopped by.  Good time for all.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent the Holidays with her daughter, Irene Pequignot, Linden.  Shawn Pequignot family; Kevin Pequignot and daughter; and Shawn Laird and family also spent time with them.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Jim Craig, January 1st; Georgette Matychak, 3rd; Jeannie Kapler, Edith Tamburro and Alex Stavisky, 4th; Pete Tomasak and Francis Baines, 5th; Matt Weisbrod, 6th; Linda Santarelli, 7th; Craig Germany and John McDonald, Jr., 9th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  To loosen stubborn glue dried on scissors or a counter, cover with WD 40.  It can dissolve the adhesive components of even strong glue to make it easier to remove.

Spending Monday through Wednesday with Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning was her cousin, Michael Charnik and his girlfriend, Karen.  They are from New Jersey.  They all had an enjoyable walk around Lopez on Tuesday; it was the best day of the week…sunny, with a little wind, but nice.  They took a ride to Dushore to see the only red light in the County (they were very impressed that it was the only red light), then an enjoyable ride through the country side.  They said they would love to come back again.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  January 1, 1974 it was cloudy with late rain and 24 degrees.  I just looked at the thermometer on this January 1st day and it’s sunny and 39 degrees.  That’s great.

There will be no Civic meeting in the month of January.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; from what I hear it’s to be pretty nice.  Get out and do some sledding, if you can, or just take a walk and get some fresh air.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Greetings,

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and now wishing you a healthy, prosperous and Happy New Year.

As you know, there is no Sully the week between Christmas and January one so I will just put in a few tidbits.  Santa stopped at the house, but his bag was very small when he got here.  He could have been a little more generous as I was pretty good this past year.  Well maybe next year.

We had a few snow falls and I am not a lover of snow, but these two gals had a lot of fun on sleds and tubes sliding down the hill even when they wiped out.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 21, 2016 by Bob McGuireDecember 21, 2016

Hope you all had a good week.  We did get some plowable snow and kids were able to go sledding.  On Friday, the 16, Bob saw a good sized flock of geese go over.  They must have finally gotten the message that it was time to head South.  Saturday was a nice day with temperature in the 40’s.  Early Sunday morning it started to pour and did that for quite some time.  Temperature was still in the 40’s.  Then, early afternoon, that cold front came through, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped to 32 degrees in no time.  Can you imagine what all that rain would have amounted to if it were snow?  Don’t even want to think about it.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, have returned home after spending some time in the “flat lands” of Marlton, NJ.

Not much news this week.  I guess folks are busy doing that last minute shopping, getting the tree up and decorated and doing all that good Christmas baking.  Hopefully, we’ll get a “little” snow so Santa can make his trip to see all the good little boys and girls.

Happy Birthday wishes to Kaeleigh McDonald who will turn 9 on the 23rd; and Ginny Stavisky’s birthday is the 31st.  Hope you both have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Anthony and Bethany Sneidar as they celebrate one year on the 28th; also to Ted and Evelyn Hubiak whose special day is the 29th.  Have a wonderful day.

HINT:  “Use a wet cotton ball or Q-Tip to pick up small shards of glass you can’t easily see.”  “To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll to your vacuum hose.  It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.”

Check out www.lopezcivicassociation.com and see the new “hoodies” that are available.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, it’s to be pretty nice.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading.

This is the last issue of the Sully.  I’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year.   See you in 2017.

Weather is getting a little more wintry, but that’s to be expected.
Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and many friends of Barbara Andrewlavage who passed away on Tues., the 6th.  Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday at St. Francis Church, with Rev. Rojas officiating.  Burial was in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez.

The Lopez Civic Association held their annual Christmas party at St. Vladimir’s Hall on Saturday.  This was done in memory of Barbara Andrewlavage, who had passed away on Tuesday.  It was felt that Barbara would want the party to go on.  For many year, she chaired this event.  Through the Civic Association, she would purchase special gifts for kids in their age category.  She also, with her own money, purchased and donated all the crafts the kids enjoyed and the “goodie” bags.  Santa stopped by to visit with the kids and hand out the bags.  Carols were sung and all enjoyed refreshments.   All we can say to Barb is “Merry Christmas and Thank You for your years of dedication to make the kids happy.”  Thank you to all that helped.

No Civic meeting in December.

Happy Birthday wishes to Carter Vermiere, 17th; V Rev Mother Christophora and Christian Santarelli, 19th; and Alyssa Pequignot, 20th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell.  Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe or spray it on the area and wipe.  Much better smell than bleach.”

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever it is you plan on doing.   Heard it’s to be quite cold by the weekend; we’ll take what we get.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 8, 2016 by Bob McGuireDecember 8, 2016

Weather is still pretty nice, except for the wind that doesn’t quit blowing.  The weekend was pretty good, with temperatures in the 40’s.  We’ll see if we get the snow that’s supposed to be coming.  I would rather not see it, but it is winter and we’ve been pretty lucky so far.  Lots of nice decorations around town for the Christmas Holidays.

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and friends of Donna Work who passed away on Saturday.  Funeral will be held on Friday from Dean Homer Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Church, with her pastor, the Rev Richard Rojas, officiating.  Interment will be in the Parish cemetery.   She will be missed.

Retro hoodies are now available.  Check out www.lopezcivicassociation.com to see what they look like and prices.  They’ve been requested by many and will be a good addition to your wardrobe for the wintry weather.  Contact me at the info below if interested in ordering.  You can also contact Brian McGuire at 570-928-9838.

Remember:  No Civic meeting for the month of December.  Everyone is busy with Christmas and New Year’s, so we take some time off.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent some time over the Thanksgiving holiday with her daughter, Irene Pequignot, Linden.  Shawn Pequignot family; Jennifer (Pequignot) Laird family; and Kevin Pequignot and daughter, Alyssa, all had Thanksgiving with them.  Good time for all, with lots of left-overs for the following week.

Happy Birthday to Aaron Risser; 9th; Andrea (Matychak) Anderson, 12th; Dylan Amon, 13th; and Noah Brown, 14th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Hate foggy windshields?  Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car.  When the windows fog, rub with the eraser.  Works better than a cloth.”  (Have to try that.  I hate foggy windshields.)

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, even if we do get a little snow.  Kids and hunters will like it, even if some of us “older” folks don’t.   Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Does anyone remember the Cherry Township High School JUNIOR PROM memory dance booklet of May 14,1948???????? I have one.  If interested, I will put some of the pages on in the future.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 1, 2016 by Bob McGuireDecember 1, 2016

Hope you all had a very nice Thanksgiving.  The weather sure cooperated most places for those who were traveling.  Saturday we woke up to some snowy ground cover; didn’t last long.  Sunday we woke up again with snowy ground cover; didn’t last long.  Temperatures were up above 40 both days with some sunshine.  Last I heard, the week is to be pretty good, with a chance of rain.   I’ll take that over really cold, windy, snowy days.

Thanks to Dave, Ruth, Clair, Macrina, Bob and JoAnn for taking time out of their busy schedules on Friday to meet and decorate the monument area and pavilion for the Christmas season.  Weather was in their favor; ground wasn’t frozen so was easy to pound the rods in the ground.  We didn’t have to slosh through the snow back and forth.  All in all, a good day.  Good job, everyone.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, spent Thanksgiving with Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire.  Had a nice dinner at Brian’s and enjoyed the afternoon playing Win, Lose or Draw.   Was a fun time.

Cory McDonald came in from Rhode Island to spend some time over the Thanksgiving holiday with his family and friends.

First marking period Distinguished Honor Roll:  Kyler Burke; Aaron Kinsey; Jacob Williams; Trevor Kinsey.   Honor Roll:  Paige Burke; Noah Brown.  Congratulations to all of you.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes to Elexus Dunkleberger, 6th of December; Tony Sneidar, Jr., Marino Santarelli, and Robyne McCobin, all on the 8th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste.  Add garlic at the end of the recipe if you want a stronger taste.”   (Never knew that, but I don’t use garlic much anyway.)  “Leftover Snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert.  Simply chop them in a food processor.  Peel, core and slice a few apples.  Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy over the apples.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.  Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.”

Guess I’ll take a look in Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book.  November 27, 1973 – fog, rain and 44 degrees.  Our temperature today was 44+, no fog and no rain.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; make the most of it.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 24, 2016 by Bob McGuireNovember 24, 2016

Well, the big news this week is the weekend snow storm we had…..our first for the season.  Saturday started out perfect with temperatures in the 60’s.  Saturday evening it started to spritz down some sprinkles, then it changed to snow.  By Sunday morning, we had about 6 inches of heavy, wet snow.  Sam and Gaige Burke even went out about 10 p.m. Saturday evening and made a snowman in the yard.  Sunday was a raw day with cold wind and some flurries off and on.  Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald enjoyed tobogganing on the hill and Heather had fun with the four wheeler.  So, it wasn’t a complete wash-out for those who like to be out in the cold. Don’t know what the week will be for us, but heard it’s not to be too bad; temperatures in the upper 40’s.  That will be good for those traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Has anyone seen or heard any geese going South?  Someone mentioned quite a while ago they heard some.  I haven’t heard or seen any so don’t know if they’re around yet because of the nicer weather we had.  Now, I’m sure they’ll be heading to warmer climate.

Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  Joe got to play horseshoes in Benton while he was here.  Guess they also had some snow plowing and shoveling to do too.

For those of who who missed the play, “A Fractured Election” on Friday or Saturday evening at the New Albany Fire Co. Social Hall, you missed a great show.  Those folks who put that on did an excellent job and kept the crowd laughing the whole time.  Can’t wait for what they’ll come up with for next year.

St. Vladimir’s Church is having an Ethnic dinner on Sunday, the 27th, Russian Hall, Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or Take out.  BYOB.   They also have pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

REMINDER:   There will be a work bee at the Monument to decorate for Christmas.  If you’re free on Saturday, the 25th, 11 a.m., come on up to the Pavilion and help.  Many hands make light work.

There will be no Civic meeting for the month of December so everyone can enjoy the Holiday season.

Hint:  “Looking for a “green” way to clean your faucets, sinks and stainless steel?  Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean.   Not only will it remove the tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won’t leave streaks and won’t harm your fingers while you clean.”

Good luck hunters as you go into the woods to “bag the big one” (either a deer or a bear).

Hope you all have a very nice Thanksgiving with loved ones during this special time.  Also, give thanks to those who won’t be home for the Holiday as they are serving our Country to keep us safe and free.  We thank them for their service.

Guess that’s all the news for this time.  Enjoy your week as best you can.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

As you can see, the Lopez Cotton Trees are in full bloom.  This crop of cotton produced about 6 inches.  YUK!!!!

Well, we sure can’t complain about the weather; it’s been great almost all week.  Other than a few frosty mornings and some really wicked wind, the days warmed up nicely. Last I heard, it’s to be nice right through Thanksgiving.  Let’s hope so.  Did you get to see the Super Moon??  It was awesome!!

Sympathy from the community to the family and friends of Jim Yarnall who passed away on Tuesday, the 8th.  Funeral was held on Saturday, the 12th, from Dean Homer Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Dyer officiating.   He will be missed; he was a friend to all.

Visiting last week with Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, were her girlfriends, from Marlton, NJ, Michele Utz and Karen Bookwalter and son, Casey.  They enjoyed quad riding and a trip to the Alpaca farm.  Was a great visit; weather was great and Mary wished they could have stayed longer.

Ted and Mary Lowden were also visited by the bear last week.  Mary said she’s now out of bird feeders and they lost one just a while ago.  I told her maybe she should not put any out until she knows they are in hibernation.

Did you get to see the play, “A Fractured Election”?  If not, you still have time.  Final performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the New Albany Social Hall.  Doors open one hour before the play.  Get out and support these guys who do a great job with this fund raiser.  They also have raffles, etc. to help with making some money.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

St. Vladimir’s Church is also hosting an Ethnic Dinner on Sunday, the 27th, Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or take out and BYOB.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited on Sunday with Bob and JoAnn McGuire.  Had a nice time and tasty lunch with them while they were here.  Jr. brought up some of his homemade pumpkin/ cinnamon buns, complete with homemade cream cheese/pumpkin spice icing.  Delicious.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Alek Laird and Mike McDonald, 19th; Jaeden Patson, 20th; Jeff Olsen, 22nd; Serenity Laird and Reese Baton, 23rd; and Cassidy Brown, 30th.   Hope you all have a super day.

Happy Anniversary to TJ and Allison Lowden as they celebrate on the 17th.  Have a nice day.

HINT:  “Keep a few pieces of bread in your cookie jar to keep your cookies soft longer.  May have to put new ones in after a few days.”  (I do this and it does work.)   “To cut down on odors when cooking cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli, add a little vinegar to the water.”  (Now, this is one I’ll have to try; it does get pretty “stinky” when cooking.)

I guess the hunters are still out and about in the woods.  Haven’t heard of any lucky ones so far, so guess they’ll keep hunting until the season is over.

Thanksgiving is coming soon.  Hope you all have a blessed day with loved ones at this special time.  Give thanks also to those who are serving our country to keep us free and won’t make it home for the Holiday.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; should be a good one.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.  Keep the hints coming.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 9, 2016 by Bob McGuireNovember 9, 2016

Been having some nice weather for a few days; other than the wind, that is.  Sun feels good, but the wind could go away.  Was over 50 degrees both Saturday and Sunday and last I heard it’s to be above normal, with no storms, right through the 19th.  Can you believe that?  We’ll see.

Halloween went very well at the Pavilion.  Had lots of kids all costumed up waiting to be judged, after having some snacks.  Thanks to Dave, Ruth and Clair for taking on the job of judging.  Winners were:  0-3 – Original – Henry Ritinski; Pretty – Hailey Mensch; Funny – Grayson Burke.  4-7 – Original – Gaige Burke; Pretty – Kyleigh McDonald; Funny – Miles Baton.  8-11 – Original – Angel Clark; Pretty – Ember Higley; Funny – Landyn Sperry.  12 – Up – Original – Alexis Musani; Pretty – Katherine Kapler; Funny – Eric Applegate.  Thanks to Brian McGuire for driving the truck with the hay wagon and taking the kids around town to visit the houses to get their treats.   Kids, as well as adults, enjoyed the ride and the town folk were happy to see them.  Thanks to Kathy Neufer and family for chairing the event this year.  Did a great job. Thanks to all who donated in any way to make this a fun time.  And, most of all, thanks to those who left their porch light on for the kids to stop by.

Spending the weekend with Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, was her brother, Jack Eggers and his friend, Barbara Royko, Glassboro, NJ.  They enjoyed Jolly Trolley and World’s End.  It was a great weekend and Ted and Mary loved having them here.  Hope they visit again soon.

Sympathy from the community to Pat (Romania) Burd and family on the passing of Al Burd on the 26th of October.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

St. Vladimir’s Church is having an Ethnic Foods dinner on Sunday, November 27th, Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or take out and BYOB.

New Albany Volunteer Fire Co. play is coming up on Saturday, the 12th at 7 p.m. and Sunday, the 13th at 2 p.m.  It will also be done again on Friday, the 18th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, the 19th at 7 p.m.  It is called “A Fractured Election” and should be another good one.  If you get a chance, take a ride out to the Fire Hall in New Albany and support their endeavors.

Guess I forgot some birthdays last week.  Happy belated birthday to Doc Shoemaker on the 1st; Tim Bullis, 5th; Devon DeSanto and Tai Iwancio 6th; Terry Bullis, 7th; and Grayson Burke, 8th.  Hope you all had a nice day.

Birthday wishes now to “B” from all his gang as he celebrates on the 11th; Aiden Sperry, 13th; and Monica Black, 16th.  Have a really nice day.

Happy Anniversary to V Rev Gary and Georgette Matychak as they celebrate on the 10th.  Have a nice day and many more.

HINT:  “For left over salad, put a paper towel over the top instead of a lid.  This keeps the salad fresh and any cheese that’s used will not get soggy.”  “To get rid of musty basements smells, put charcoal in a flat one foot by two foot box and sprinkle with one pint of Epsom salts.  Scattering a few charcoal here and there also works.”

I think that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week.  I see, since the weather is nice, that a few are putting out their Christmas decorations.   Gotta get past Thanksgiving first.   Don’t know if any of the hunters are lucky; haven’t heard anything, but the season will be here for a while.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I will get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

What a weekend.  Was miserable on Saturday with cold and wind.  Sunday was very rainy with thunder and lightning, but at least the temperature went up to 61 degrees, which is unusual, so won’t complain.   All week is to be pretty good, with temperatures in the upper 50’s.

Mary Kravetz recently was visited by her niece and husband, Mary Jane and Tom McDonald, Nesconset, Long Island, New York.  They went out for lunch at Big Wheels Meat House in Dushore.   Joining them for lunch were Annabelle Kravetz, Mildred; Debbie (Kravetz) McDonald, Muncy Valley; and Don and Irene (Kravitz) Risser, Millersville.  After lunch, the group had dessert and coffee at the home of Annabelle Kravetz.

Don’t forget the play, “A Fractured Election” is coming up on Nov. 12th and 13th and Nov. 18th and 19th at the New Albany Fire Hall.  These folks put on a fun play.  They also have other things at the Hall to take part in.   Attend this play and support the Fire Company.

NOTICE:  Remember to turn your clocks BACK one hour on Sunday, November 6th.

Mrs. Irene Huray recently spent some time with her daughter, Irene Pequignot and family, Linden.  They all helped her celebrate her birthday while she was there.

REMEMBER:  Election Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 8th.   Be sure you get out and vote.  It’s your privilege to do that.

Haven’t heard if any of the hunters have been successful with either deer hunting or turkey hunting.  I know Ted and Mary only have to go out their front door and they can have all the turkeys they want.  They also had the bear the other evening and he did a job on the bird feeder and burning barrel.  So, guess they haven’t hibernated yet; guess it’s too warm so they’ll stick around.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, spent a few days at her home on Church Street.

Hope everyone had a nice, safe Halloween.    Weather was nice for Saturday and was supposed to be good for Monday too.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “When you grate cheese to freeze, toss with a bit of cornstarch to keep it from sticking together.”   “A few drops of lemon juice added to simmering rice will keep the grains separated.”  (Have to try the rice one; mine is always a big blob.)

Guess that’s about the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; never know what it’s going to do next.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   Get it to me by late Sunday afternoon and I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

hayBrian drove all the happy Halloweeners in the big hay wagon on a fun trip to all the homes that had their lights on to treat the kids.  Good job Brian.
