Lopez, PA Posted on October 3, 2022 by Bob McGuireOctober 3, 2022

Hope you’re enjoying this frigid, windy, rainy weather we’ve been getting.  There were a couple of nice days, but then Saturday we had 28 degrees and a frost.  Didn’t like that at all.  Sunday we had two rain showers and temperature didn’t get up past 62 degrees.  Think maybe we’ll have some Indian Summer yet?   Sure hope so.  The creeks and streams have raised a little from the rain, but need more to help them along.

There were 20 turkeys in our yard one day last week.  Haven’t seen any for quite some time.  I think the hummers have left for warmer places to stay for the winter.  We saw a few stragglers last week, but nothing this week.  Gardens are about done, so I imagine there will be a lot of canning and freezing for the winter months.

Next Civic meeting will be Wednesday, the 19th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Too cold at the Pavilion now, unless we get a heat wave.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  To order, call 440-645-9719 or 732-221-2803.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.

Happy Birthday to Ted Beaver and Dinky Burke, 27th.  Hope you had a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Dustin and Sam Burke as they celebrate on the 28th.  Have a fantastic day and many more.

Since we’ve been having rainy weather, next time your dog comes in from the rain, wipe him down with Bounce or any dryer sheet making him smell springtime fresh.

There are some things that will be going on in October, so check the Sully or Face Book to see what might be happening that you’d be interested in.

That’s it for this time.  If you want your news in the paper, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or email me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in. Can’t do it if I don’t have it.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Finally had some rain during the week and helped to fill the creeks, wells and also Cold Spring.  Saturday was a good, warm, dry day.  Sunday we had some more rain and I see rain predicted until Tuesday.  Sure hope no rain for the Bowhunters Festival on the weekend and also the Bloomsburg Fair coming up after that.  The Fair usually gets at least one day of rain, so hope this year Mother Nature will be kind to all and keep the rain away so everyone can have an enjoyable time at these events.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be ordered by calling 440-645-9719 or 732-221-2803.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.

Next Civic Association meeting will be on Wednesday, the 21st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we may have to move to the Township Building.  Time will tell.   Membership dues are due.  See Heather to renew or to become a member.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, spent a few days at her home here.

Happy Birthday to JoAnn McDonald, 19th; Mya Evans, 20th; and Roland Dayton, 21st.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Did you know you can rub Vicks Vapor Rub on your temples to relieve a headache.  Gonna have to try that next time I get one and hope it works.

There will still be things going on around the County.  Keep an eye on the Sully.  Especially read Linda Raub and Connie Hatch news columns.  If anyone knows, they sure do, and they keep all informed.   There are also posts on Face Book to check out.

I think that’s it for now.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Enjoy your week.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Hope you all enjoyed your Labor Day Holiday.  Weather was pretty nice.   Saturday was a perfect day for the Sullivan County Fair.  It was warm and no rain.  We were at the Fair on Saturday afternoon to help with the book sale at the 4-H Building.  It was quite busy and seems it went well.   There was lots of good food, especially the soft ice cream, vendors of all sorts selling their wares.  Lots of animals to see in the barn area.  Saw some of the cutest little black pigs.  Lots of 4-H kids who were getting their awards Saturday evening.   4-H is a great program for the kids to learn so many different things.  You could play Bingo, listen to music for free on the outside stage.  Many different rides for all to enjoy, along with games to be played.  The 4×4 truck pulls were on Saturday at 6 p.m. and there was a long line of cars waiting to get onto the grounds for that event. It’s a loud one, that’s for sure.  There were also all kinds of exhibits to look over.

I see there were quite a few yard/barn sales going on.  We did finally get some rain on Sunday, but not a whole lot.  We do need more rain.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, enjoyed a few days at their home here.  Weather was in their favor and they got a lot of end of summer things done.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 21st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  I think it should still be warm enough.  Membership dues are now due.  See Heather to renew yours or to become a member.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of each month.  They can be ordered by calling 440-645-9719 or 732-221-2803.  They can be picked up from Noon to 1 p.m. at the Church Hall.

The Bow Hunter’s Festival is coming up on September 16, 17, and 18 at the Forksville Fair Grounds.  Always a good event if you’re interested.  Moving targets to shoot at, lots of vendors for you to check out and maybe buy something.

There will be things going on yet in the County so keep a watch on the Sully to know when, where, etc.

Happy Birthday to Alexia Vermiere, up there in Alaska, 13th.  Have a great day.

Happy Anniversary to Scott and Susan Aharonian as they celebrate on the 14th.  Have a nice day.

Some uses for WD40 include:  Spritz on problem zippers; spray on wooden handles of garden tools; spray on clogged shower heads, wait, and clean.

That’s it.  Enjoy your week.  We may get some rain or it may miss us….again.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me by USPS; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Can’t put it in if you don’t contact me.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Hope you all are enjoying the nice weather.  Was a perfect weekend for things going on.  It did a little hot, but better than freezing cold, so I’ll take it.

The Lopez flea market held at Nessie’s pond on Saturday was fairly well attended.  Thanks to all who stopped by to add to their “stash” of treasures.  Special thanks to Ginny Stavisky and Faye Puzo for being our “cookers”.  They grilled the hamburgs and hot dogs and they were tasty.  So, you got to shop and get something to eat too.  Hopefully next year will be bigger and better.

St. Vladimir’s Church is once again selling pierogies the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Please call 1-440-645-9719 or 1-732-221-2803 to place your order.

Did you know if you wrap tape, sticky side out, around your ankles you will be surprised how many ticks you will catch.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, September 21st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Should still be warm enough, I hope.   Membership dues are now due.  See Heather McDonald to pay yours for 2023.

Some birthday wishes to send to Kristin (McDonald) Mensch, September 5th; Miles Baton, 8th.  Have a good day, both of you.

Happy Anniversary to Chase and Jodi Brumwell, 2nd; and Les and Kathy Isett, 10th.  Have a great day, all of you.

It’s still not too late for activities going on around the County.  Keep watch in the Sully to find out where, when, and if you are interested  Sullivan County News & Bulletin Board on Face Book is another place to watch for all kinds of things you might be interested in.

That’s it.  Enjoy your week.  I heard rain, but it keeps going around, above or below us.  We sure do need some rain.  The creeks and wells are getting pretty dry.   Even the gardens are dry if they’re not watered constantly.  Cold Spring is just about a trickle last time we were there.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; USPS me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will do my best to put it in.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on August 28, 2022 by Bob McGuireAugust 28, 2022

Had a pretty hot and humid week.  We did have some rain very early Sunday morning.  Cleared up and got pretty nice, until late afternoon when it rained again.  Didn’t last too long, but maybe helped some.  Cooled things down a little.  I did hear heat and humidity are coming back for the week again.  I’ll take it.  I did see a lot of trees changing color today and don’t like that at all.  Too early for the cold weather coming.

Sunday was a nice day for our Che-Hanna mineral club picnic at Saterlee Creek Park.   Was a little windy but no rain at that time.  Good food, good friends and lots of visiting.  Was the last one for the summer.

Tyler McGuire has gone back to RIT in Rochester, NY, after working from home doing two internships since January.  He’s taking  classes in Software Engineering, with a Double Major in Economics.  He is the son of Bob McGuire, Jr. and our grandson. Good luck this Semester!

Next Civic meeting will be Wednesday, September 21st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion, if weather permits.  Hopefully it will still be nice then.

Don’t forget the Flea Market at Nessie’s Pond on Saturday, the 27th.   Come and browse and see what you might like to purchase.  If interested in setting up to sell, contact me at the info below.  Let’s hope for nice weather.

Keep an eye on the Sully for more up-coming events that will be taking place around the County.   Might be something to spark your interest.

I got ahead of myself last week and put the rest of the August birthdays and anniversaries in.  Will post some September ones next week.

Guess that’s about it.  Hope everyone is well and enjoying the weather that we are having, even if some days isn’t as nice as others.  Gotta take what Mother Nature gives us and hope for the best.  So, enjoy your week, whatever you may do.

Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on August 18, 2022 by Bob McGuireAugust 28, 2022

We have been having some awesome weather to enjoy.  We did have 37 degrees early one morning, but warmed up really well.  There were a couple of days early in the week that we had a “smidgen” of rain.  Didn’t last long and got hot and humid when it was over.   We do need the rain.  I don’t think I’ve seen the grass this brown and crunchy for a long time.  I heard maybe Tuesday and Wednesday rain, but it seem to always go around us.

Was a great weekend for events going on around the County.  I’m sure there will be more events in the up-coming weeks to keep and eye on the Sully.

Irene (Huray) Pequignot, Linden, spent the weekend at her home on Church Street.  She attended her SCHS class of 1969 second annual picnic on Saturday at Connell’s Dam.  Food and games were enjoyed by all 17 classmates who were in attendance.

Flowers and gardens still seem to be doing fairly well, especially if they are being watered regularly.  They do need the rain.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, spent a few days at her home here and enjoyed the really nice weather.

Happy Birthday to TJ Lowden, 17th; Andrew Froese, 20th; Mary (Marimiek) Santiago, 21st; Karly Amon, 26th; and Gaige Burke, 29th.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Jason and Heather Burke as they celebrate on the 26th.  Have a good day and many more great anniversaries.

Flies hate PineSol.  Mix equal amounts of PineSol and water.  Put in a spray bottle and use it outside to wipe tables in picnic areas or around windows to keep flies away.

I think that’s all the news for this time.  Enjoy your week.  Get out and take a walk, breathe in the fresh air, just do something you enjoy.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

AUGUST 3, 2022

Lopez, PA Posted on August 4, 2022 by Bob McGuireAugust 4, 2022

Had some hot weather during the week.  Didn’t get the rain that was predicted.  Everything is so dry and brown looking.  We really do need a nice, slow rain to soak in the ground to help things along.   Well, we had some sprinkles Sunday evening.  Not much at all, but did wet the roads and grass some.  Don’t know what the week will bring, but I hope Mother Nature will work in our favor for Lopez Old Home Day on Saturday, the 6th; Noon to 10 p.m.  Lots of things going on so come join us.

Sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of Margaret (Peggy) Hoodak who passed away on Monday, the 25th.  Mass of Christian burial was held on the 29th at St. Basil’s Church, with burial in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Lopez.  Funeral was under the direction of McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, Dushore.

We had another good crew at the work bee on Saturday to finish up getting the grounds ready for Old Home Day.  Thanks to all who did a great job there.  Those included Maggie Brumwell; Clair Johnson; Heather, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald; CJ Molyneux; Ted Puzo; Alex Stavisky; Barbara Bell and a young lad this time, her nephew, Kessler Gilbert; and Bob and I.

Happy Anniversary to John and Mary Rajkiewicz, Rouse Pond Road, as they celebrate 59 years on August 3rd.  Congratulations.

Happy Birthday to Stephen Mikolajczyk and Scherril Dayton, 4th; Kyle Froese and Kathy Lebo, 9th; and Randy Lebo and Mary Lowden, 10th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Did you know you can use honey for skin blemishes.  Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a band-aid over it.  Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing.  Open surgical wounds and burn victims are kept clean in the hospital with honey.  How sweet is that?

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 17th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Hopefully we will have a good report on having a great Old Home Day.

Keep and eye on the Sully, Face Book and Sullivan County News and Bulletin Board for events that may be taking place that you might be interested in.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, their granddaughter, Haley Latch and three of her friends are spending some time at the Fanning home here.  Weather has been nice so far, so they are able to do things while they are here.

Can’t believe that July has gone and August is here already.  Hopefully we will have some nice weather yet to enjoy, before the cold weather sets in.

Don’t have anything else now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you plan.  Hope to see you Saturday at the Pavilion.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on July 27, 2022 by Bob McGuireJuly 27, 2022

Boy!!   Did we have a “doozy” of a storm Sunday afternoon.  Pouring rain, wind like crazy, thunder and lightning.    Lasted for about a half hour.  We needed rain, but would have been much better if it were a slow, steady rain, rather than the downpour that washes everything all over the place.  We had some really hot days during the week.  Hopefully will cool down some for the week coming.  Just hope the weekend of August 6th, for Old Home Day will be a really nice one.  I’ll talk to Mother Nature and see what I can do.

Irene (Huray) Pequignot, Linden, spent some time on Saturday at her home on Church Street.

The Lopez flea market will be coming up on Saturday, August 27th, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or whenever the customers have left.  Check your garage, attic, basement or anywhere that you might have things you’d like to sell.  They say “one person’s trash is another man’s treasure”.  So, you may have something that someone will really want and it will be a treasure to them.  The flea market will be held down by Nessie at the pond.

Nina Weslowski spent the weekend with her parents, Gerry and Paula; her brother, Paul and friend, Chris in Allentown.  I imagine it was pretty hot there too.

I know there are still things going on around the County, so keep an eye on the Sully for these.  Linda Raub and Connie Hatch are really up on these events, so read the Forksville and Estella news.

There will be a work bee on Saturday, the 30th, 10 a.m. at the Pavilion to finish up getting ready for Old Home Day.  If you’re available and can spend some time, come on up and give a hand.

Happy Birthday to Marino Santarelli and Carole Kilgus, 28th; Madison Burke and Matt Dayton, Jr., 29th; and Casey Bonardi, 30th.  Hope you have a nice day.

The 4-H Model Rocketry launch will be held on Sunday, the 31st at the Vough farm.  These kids have worked really hard on their rockets and will get to launch them and see what they do.  Come on out if you’d like to watch the kids have a “blast”.

The community bids a fond farewell to Carole Kilgus, Kevin and Teri Bullis as they leave Lopez and move South.  Happy trails and good luck in your new home.  They will be missed.  They were very instrumental in the Civic Association, helping with events that were held; and especially Old Home Day, which Carole and Teri did for many years.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, whether rain or shine.  It’s still a good time for all.  Have news, let me know by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; snail mail; see me; or e-mail at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

LOPEZ CIVIC UNCANCELED OLD HOME DAY

Yep!!!  We will be having Lopez Old Home Day this year.  It will be on Saturday, August 6th, Noon to 10 p.m. on the Pavilion grounds.  You will have your choice of a chicken or pulled pork dinner with sides of baked potato, baked beans, cole slaw, drink and dessert.  The Civic food booth will have hot dogs and hamburgs, chips, soda and water.

Again we will have SS Peter and Paul with their popular Bingo game.  Try your luck and enjoy the games.  St. Vladimir’s Church will have their delicious ethnic foods  —  pierogies, halushki, halupki and potato pancakes to satisfy your taste buds.

Take a walk to the game booths and enjoy the Duck Pond; bottle toss, tic-tac-toe and Whiffle Ball.  Right near there will be the dunk tank.  There’s always someone willing to sit on the cushion and someone trying to see if they can put that someone in the water.

The Civic Swag Booth will have t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale, along with the Lopez decals, thanks to the generous donation of these from Michael Reese.  There will also be basket raffles and 50/50 raffle.  Something new this year will be a chance to have your fortune told by the “Mysterious Madame Lopezina”.  That should be fun.  Last, but not least, we will have the ever popular AM Flashback from 5-9 p.m. for your musical and dancing enjoyment.

The money raised on Old Home Day goes toward bills; Memorial Day and Halloween.  A big portion goes toward mowing of the parks; Cold Spring;; EUB cemetery; and Pavilions maintenance.  Donations are always accepted and so appreciated.    Come on out.  Hope to see you there.

Weather has been pretty nice.  We do need some rain and may get some this week.  Some of the creeks are almost bone dry.  The gardens, lawns and flowers really need the rain.  Need a slow, steady rain, not the heavy rain all at once and quits after five minutes.

Congratulations to Kyleigh McDonald on winning a bike in a raffle at the recently held turtle races in New Albany.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Call 570-928-8909 to order yours.

Before we know it, July will be gone and it will be August and time for Lopez Old Home Day on Saturday, the 6th.   If you’re interested in donating a basket for our raffle, please contact Pat Arcaro at 570-928-8930.  There will be food; music; dunk tank; Bingo; more food; sale of Lopez t-shirts and hoodies; and Lopez decals.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Mother Nature keeps the rain away that day.  Hope to see you there.

Keep an eye on the Sully for events that may be coming up in the next few weeks.  There might be something to “spark” your interest.   It’s always a busy time right into the Fall season.

Happy Birthday to Matthew Santarelli, 17th; Adam Aharonian, 18th; Evalyn Lansberry and Sr. Ella Mae McDonald, 20th; Matt Beaver 21st; Billy Stasiak, 23rd;  Dominic Sneidar, 24th; and Jan Marie Manuel, 25th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

A use for WD 40 is to spray the grill of your car for bug repellent.  Also can be used to remove stickers and price tags easily.

That’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Grass looks a little dry and brown so hopefully we get some rain to perk things up.  It still should be pretty warm.  Have news, get in touch with me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; snail mail; see me; or e-mail at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.  Comments always welcome.

Old Home Day 2022 is a GO.

Come and enjoy Games – Chicken or Pulled Pork dinner – Byzantine Bingo – Wiffle Ball – Duck Pond

Lopez Swag Items – Ethnic Foods – Dancing – Bill’s Bar – Civic Burgers & Dogs – Water Dunk Tank

and a lot more.

What a perfect few days we had.  Sunshine, warm weather and a nice breeze.  Last I heard we may get some thunderstorms on Tuesday, but we will see.

The gardens and flowers are doing really well from what I’ve been seeing as I walk around town.  A little rain would help them along.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent some time at their home here.  Was a really nice time to get things done around the house. Weather sure cooperated for them.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Call 570-928-8909 to order yours.

You still have time to make a basket and donate it to the Lopez Old Home Day this year.  Will be on Saturday, August 6th, from Noon to 10 p.m.  If you’d like to donate a basket, please call Pat Arcaro at 570-928-8930.

Thank you to those who helped at the work bee on Saturday at the Pavilion.   Those who volunteered to help were Pat and Vito; G and Leslie; Kathy and Les, Alex and Ginny; Maggie and her sister-in-law, Sunita; along with Bob and I.  Good group or workers and got the job done in no time.  There will still be another work bee before Old Home Day, so check here to see the date and time. Old Home Day is just around the corner.   If you can volunteer, please do so.  Many hands make light work.

There will still be things going on around the County, so keep an eye on the Sully and also Face Book to see if there might be something you’d be interested in taking part in or just watching.

Have achy muscles from over working out in the yard?  Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil.  Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for relief of those aching muscles.  (Might smell strong for a while, but hope it works.)

For those of you who have ordered the 2022 Lopez mug, due to the Covid situation and not getting supplies in a timely fashion to make the mugs, they won’t be here until late November.   Sorry for any inconvenience, but it’s something the Company has no control over.   Hang in there.  We will have them eventually.

Got some birthday wishes to send out to Dan Stasiak, 11th; Quinn Vinetelli, 12th; Woody Woodford and Averie Bahr, 13th; David Black 14th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to David and Lavonne Black and Matt and Scherril Dayton as the both celebrate on the 14th.  Congratulations and many more nice days ahead.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, July 20th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Plans coming along for Old Home Day on August 6th.

Guess that’s it for this time.  Enjoy your week.  Hopefully it will be really nice.  The month is going by so fast we have to take advantage of the nice weather when we have it.  Have news you’d like in the paper?  Contact me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Hope you all enjoyed the nice weather for the 4th Holiday weekend.  Was perfect for picnics and activities going on around the County.  Weather for the week is to be nice for a couple days and then we are to get some rain, which is needed for the gardens and flowers.

The humming birds are busy at the feeders and like to play around.  We have at least 8 that are seen during the day.  The bunnies are all over the place.  Haven’t seen the bear and three cubs, but hear they are still around too.  Mother Nature at her finest.

Don’t forget, work bee at the Pavilion on Saturday, 10:30 a.m.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 20th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Plans coming along pretty good for Old Home Day on Saturday, August 6th, from Noon to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Bob, Aka, UVBOB, and I were invited by Jane Swift, to do a fluorescent mineral program at Worlds End State Park.  Was a nice night and there were about 50 kids and adults who enjoyed how “ugly” rocks are made “pretty” by using an ultraviolet light on them.  Many interesting questions were asked and there were a lot of “oohs” and “aahs” taking place.  Thank you, Jane, for having us.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Call 570-928-8909 to order yours.

Happy Birthday to Stacey Olsen, 2nd; Brandan McCobin, 4th; Brayson Siddle, 5th; Bryson Brumwell, 6th; and Samantha Burke, 10th.  Hope you all have a super day.

B;s Gang sends birthday wishes to Bill Stasiak as his special day is the 6th.  Have a good one.

Happy Anniversary to Mike and Heather McDonald who celebrate on the 7th.  Also, to Jeffrey and Kristin (McDonald) Mensch as they celebrate the same day.  Many more happy days ahead.

Studies have shown that peppermint oil’s cooling and anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe minor itches from bug bites and poison ivy.  Dilute two drops of peppermint oil in olive oil and rub on the affected area.

Don’t forget, support you local businesses.  There are still things that will be going on around the County so keep and eye on the Sully and also Face Book to see what’s happening.  Might be something you’d like to see or even take part in.

That’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Have news, get in touch with me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; snail mail; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

If you see Mike or Heather McDonald, wish them a HAPPY 15th ANNIVERSARY

Not a bad week, weather-wise.  Saturday and Sunday were HOT!  Did get the couple of thunderstorms that were predicted.  We do need some rain for the gardens and flowers.  They are looking quite nice right now.

Bear and three cubs are still around.  They’ve been see all over so do travel a lot during the day.

Hope you all have a safe and Fourth of July Holiday, whatever your plans.  Hopefully, will be nice enough for picnics and gatherings.

St. Basil’s IHM Parish will be holding their annual picnic on Sunday, July 3rd, on the Church grounds.  Stop over and see what all they have to offer and support the Church.

Worlds End State Park Forksville PA has UVBOB lined up for one of his Ultraviolet programs on July 2nd at 8:00 pm in the visitors center.

Don’t forget, Saturday, July 9th, 10:30 a.m. clean up day at the Pavilion.  If you’re available and can help, please stop by.

There are a lot of good food places that have menus on Face Book and in the Sully.  Check them out and find a good place to eat and support them.   Also, support all the local businesses when you can.  It’s good for you and good for them.

Wednesday, July 20th, 6 p.m., Civic meeting at the Pavilion.  Old Home Day plans coming together for Saturday, August 6th, from Noon to 10 p.m.  Hope to see you all there.  We didn’t have it for the past two years and hope to bring it back with a great time for all.

Happy Birthday to Garrett Burke; 27th.  Have a nice day.

B’s Gang sends birthday wishes to Matt Karchner as he celebrates on the 28th.  Hope you have a good day.

Congratulations to Kaeleigh McDonald for Distinguished Honor Roll for the last marking period.  Also, to Bruno Day for making Honor Roll.

Want to get rid of stink bugs?  Put 2 Tablespoons of Dawn dish detergent in a spray bottle.  Fill with water and spray outside of doors and windows.  They hate the smell.  Every 2-3 days for best results.

There are always things going on in the County now with the summer weather here.  Check the Sully for things you may be interested in.

Thinking of putting a basket together to donate for our Old Home Day?  If you are, please contact Pat Arcaro at 570-928-8930 and let her know.

I think that’s it.  Enjoy your week.  I did hear thunderstorms again, but I won’t hold my breath.  If you have news, get in touch with me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

We had some strange weather for the week.  We had thunder, rain, some sun and nice.  Saturday and Sunday were so darn cold and windy.  Never had so much wind that just didn’t want to quit.  The sun felt good and it warmed up in the afternoon, but cold early evening.  Hopefully some more nice weather is on the way.  Gardens and flowers are looking good.  The grass keeps growing and needing mowing often.  The hummers are busy at the feeders.

If you’d like to donate a basket for our raffle on Old Home Day, Saturday, August 6th, please contact Pat Arcaro at 570-928-8930.

Work bee at the Pavilion, July 9th at 10:30 a.m.  If you’d like to help, you’re more than welcome to come.  The more, the better and getting done faster.

Next Civic meeting, Wednesday, July 20th at the Pavilion.   Old Home Day plans coming along.  Still need volunteers.

Mark and Lisa Fenster, Philly, spent a few days at their home here.  Got outside work done with the nice weather to take advantage of.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  Can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  To order, call 570-928-8909.

Nina Weslowski enjoyed Father’s Day weekend with her parents. Gerry and Paula, in Allentown.

Thank you to Alex Stavisky and daughter, Cindy, for the donation of the American flag for our pole by the pond.  It’s flying proudly there now.

Irene (Huray) Pequignot, Linden, spent Saturday at her home on Church Street.  We had a nice visit with her while she was here.

Before starting to vacuum your floors, vacuum up 2-3 Tablespoons of cinnamon.  The smell of the cinnamon heated up inside the vacuum will scent your home.

Happy Birthday to Jack Caccia, 22nd; Cindy Stavisky, 23rd; Jean Woodford and Jodi Brumwell, 24th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

I guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week.  If you have news you’d like in the paper, get in touch with me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on June 17, 2022 by Bob McGuireJune 17, 2022

Had some nice days and a couple rainy days.  Had a couple down pours late Sunday evening and the fog rolled in.  All in all, not a bad week.  Haven’t heard what’s in store for us.  Hopefully nice.

On Friday Debbie Johnson, Charlestown, WV, her sisters, Sue Lawrence, Front Royal, VA, and Carla Chamberlain, Luray, VA, along with their Aunt Jeanne Gosart, West Wyoming, traveled to Lopez to see and reminisce at their great, great grandfather’s home on Dutch Mountain Road.  He was Jan Hurrai and his wife, Eva.  One of their sons was John Huray who had a shoe repair shop in Lopez.  They spent several hours with Bill and Bonnie Killian who now own the Huray homestead.  They enjoyed their time there.  Jeanne sat on the stone wall she played on as a child and also drank from the spring house.   They shared so many memories and so many family pictures.  The Killian’s  are now in touch with them, sharing more pictures and memories of growing up in that house.  It was also Jeanne’s birthday on Friday. The Killian’s told Jeanne she can come back any time and stay with them as long as she wants.  She said they were so blessed they were home and visit and share stories while they were here.  Jeanne said she saw her first movie in Dushore, Annie Get Your Gun, with Howard Keel.  She said such good times living in Lopez.  She, along with the girls, were a wealth of information telling how it was here in the “good ol’ days”.  They also made a side trip to visit Bob and JoAnn McGuire.  Bob’s grandfather, Peter Huray, was a brother to their great, great, grandfather, Jan.  We had such a nice visit with them also.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  Call 70-928-8909 to order yours.  Can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.

Sprinkle corn meal on your garden to keep weeds from germinating and growing in your plants.   Good idea as weeds grown pretty fast.

Alison and Jase Lowden, Marlton, NJ, and her girl friend, spent a few days at her home here.  Visited with Ted and Mary Lowden while they were here.

Happy Father’s Day to all on Sunday, the 19th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Bob and I attended our Che-Hanna Mineral Club picnic at Saterlee Creek Park in Litchfield on Sunday.  Was a beautiful day and all enjoyed a good time with good food and activities.

B’s Gang sends birthday wished to Marty Slocum who celebrates on the 16th.

Happy Birthday to Nathan Kinsey, 17th and Dana (Bling, Bling) Dempsey, 20th.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Bob and Lisa Burke on the 19th, celebrating 45 years of marriage.

On Friday Mama bear and three cubs were seen around the area.  They were in the field below Mike and Heather McDonald’s.  Then they moved to Adel’s place and were on her deck.  Don’t know where the cubs went, but Mama bear was their not once, but three times before being chased away.  One bear was at Lowden’s and Mary got a picture of him/her taking down the bird feeder.  Mike and Heather were coming home later in the afternoon and a bear was just ready to get the humming bird feeder from the porch when they chased it away.  All this was early in the day, so they come any time now.   The cubs are cute, but we really don’t need them around like this.   Nor, do we need the parents.

The hanging flower baskets that I see around town are looking so good.  The gardens are planted and hopefully will have good produce for the summer and lots of canning and freezing will be done for the winter months.

Adel Bradshaw came in from West Chester to enjoy a few days at her home here.  Got her flowers planted and they look so nice against the house.

That’s it.  Enjoy your week.  If you have news you’d like the in the paper, get in touch with me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopez.pa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be sure to be here next time.

The weather wasn’t really bad for the week, except for Friday and Saturday when we had on and off thunder storms during the day.  Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day for any activities that were going on.   Hope you all had an enjoyable Holiday and maybe got to attend one, two, or all of the Memorial Day services throughout the County.  We give thanks and honor those men and women on this special day who paid the ultimate price so we can have our freedom.

Congratulations to Kyleigh McDonald, Gaige Burke, and Drayman Sperry as they move on to seventh grade.  There was sixth grade Recognition Day last week at the school.

TJ, Alison, and Jase Lowden, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, and their friend, Kevin, who came in from Florida, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  They visited TJ’s parent, Ted and Mary, while they were here.

Gerry and Paula Weslowski, Allentown, spent the Holiday weekend with Nina Weslowski and Brian McGuire.

Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, 6 p.m., the 15th, at the Pavilion.  Plans going ahead for Old Home Day.

Happy Birthday to Lydia Stasiak, 5th; Lynn Malkemes, 8th; and Matt Dayton, 10th.  Have a nice day.

Here’s something to try.  Sprinkle cinnamon around seedlings to prevent fungus from growing.

If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.  So, step forward folks and have a great and enjoyable week.  Have news, give me a call, before 6 p.m. on Sunday evening or mail me, see me, or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.  Comments always welcome.

Lopez, PA Posted on May 26, 2022 by Bob McGuireMay 26, 2022

Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend.  The weather was pretty warm.  We did have a couple rumbles of thunder on Saturday evening, but didn’t get the storm that had been predicted.  I heard the weather for this week is to be hot and maybe another few days of rain.  I did see that the Memorial Day weekend is to be really nice.  Hope it stays that way.

Our Memorial Day speaker will be Alex Stavisky, US Army.  Alex was raised in Lopez and now lives in Palm Bay, FL, with his wife, Virginia, who will be placing the wreath at the monument.  Hope you’re able to get out and enjoy all of the parades, speakers, bands for the weekend.  Take time to pray for those who have served, are serving and who have died while serving.

Congratulations to Alyssa Pequignot and Jordon Siddle on the birth of their baby.  Ariella Christine Siddle was born on May 18th.  She is the granddaughter of Kevin Pequignot and great granddaughter of Irene (Huray) Pequignot.  She has a brother, Brayson, at home.  All are doing well.

If there are any kids in Lopez who would like to march in the Lopez Memorial Day parade, please feel free to meet at the Post Office on Monday, May 30th, at 9:45 a.m.  Dustin and Sam Burke will be there with the banner and flags.

Mark and Lisa Fenster, Philly, spent a few days at the home on Church Street.  Got some yard work done while they were here, after the rain storm.

I guess the hummers are back, sporadically.  Have seen them off and on.  They are cute birds.  I love watching them flitting around.

The months are going by so fast.  Keep checking the Sully for activities that may be going on that you’d be interested in.  May will be over with and it will be June already.

4-H Model Rocketry will be starting on Monday, June 6th, from 3-4 p.m. at the Extension Office in Dushore.  Kids are welcome to join.  Leader is Bob McGuire.

Happy Birthday to Nick DeSanto, 29th; and Bruno Day, 31st.  Hope you have a good day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Sandy Pardoe as she celebrates on the 31st.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Tony and Patti Sneidar, 26th; Joe and Diane Fanning, 28th; and Jack and Joyce Walsh, 29th.  Congratulations and have a super day.

I think that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week. Flowers and gardens are starting to take shape and look good.   Have news, contact me before 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

As I sit and type my news early Monday morning, the sun is shining and it’s warm already.  Nice.  I’ll take it.  We did have a couple of days during the week of frost; had some nice, sunny days, and had a short thunderstorm on Sunday afternoon.  Looks like Spring may finally be with us.  Will now start to see the flowers and hanging baskets out in the nicer weather.  Haven’t seen a humming bird yet, but hear they are out and about too.  Lots of yard work done over the weekend.  Check Sam’s weather report for Lopez in another section.

Congratulations to Kaeleigh McDonald for Distinguished Honor Roll.  Ruby Malkemes and Bruno Day were Honor Roll recipients for this marking period.   Good job, all!.

Any lucky turkey hunters out there?  Haven’t heard of any for this area.

With the nicer weather, I see more families coming to their homes and cabins.  Getting ready for the really nice weather to come.

Here’s something for you to try when you’re sitting out and want to keep those  pesky flying insects away.  Cut and lemon and a lime in half.  Leave the insides in.  Poke cloves all over them and hopefully this will work.   Probably smell nice too.

Hope everyone is well.  I guess there is still some Covid going around, so do take precautions when out and about.  They say to still wear a mask in public, do the social distancing and wash your hands often.  We think it’s getting better, then it’s on the rise again or another variant seems to be found.

Keep an eye on the Sully for events and activities that you may be interested in taking place around the County.  You can also check Sullivan County New and Bulletin Board on Face Book.  There are things listed there every now and then.  Hopefully our weather will stay nice for some time now.

Had a nice phone chat with a lady in Virginia who reads the Sully every week and complimented me, and all the news gals, on the good job of keeping everyone informed on what’s going on in Sullivan County.  She was checking to see if I had a birthday wish for someone special in my news.  I told her I did and she’d see it in her next paper.   She has family here in Lopez and visits when she and her husband can come.

Happy Birthday wishes to Marian Hubiak, 19th; Janet Weidner, 33nd, Susan Aharonian, 24th; and Tanya (Stasiak) Nitczniski.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Tim and Bobbi Jo Brown as they celebrate on the 21st.  Have a great day!

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your day, whatever your plans.  If you have news you’d like in the paper, please let me know by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend.  Had a few days of rain, especially Friday and Saturday all day rain until late afternoon on Saturday when the sun finally came out for a while.  Sunday was a beautiful day for celebrating Mother’s Day and anything else you may have done.  Was a good day to get outside work done.  I heard the week is to be pretty nice with no rain.  Sounds good to me.

Haven’t seen a humming bird yet, but I’ve heard reports where some have.  Kinda leery putting out the feeders for the bear to tear down.  Taking them in at night is a good idea, but they come during the day now too, so they’re not safe at any time.  I do love watching them.

Here’s a tip for your campfire.  Add rosemary and sage to your campfire to keep bugs and mosquitos away.  Wrap the rosemary and sage in aluminum foil; poke hole in the foil; put it on your fire and it will burn for quite some time and keep those pesky things away.

With the warmer weather finally coming out way, I think a lot more folks will be coming to their summer homes and cabins and spending time here.  I did near a bunch of quads going back and forth over the weekend, so some were having a good time while they were here.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 18th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Hopefully will be warm enough by then.

Happy Birthday to Xander Kapler and Kessler Gilbert, 12th; Jase Lowden and Les Isett, 14th; Cory McDonald and Deacon Burke, 15th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Keep an eye on the Sully for events that may be coming up that you would like to take part in.   Check out the dining ads for good places to eat.  I hear that Covid cases are on the rise, so be careful when heading out.  I heard that masks are again suggested to keep everyone safe.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; should be great!  If you have news you’d like in the paper, contact me before 6 p.m. on Sunday by calling 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on May 4, 2022 by Bob McGuireMay 4, 2022

Well, here it is the month of May.  Lets hope for some really nice weather on the way.  I heard we are to get a lot of rain for the week.  Sure could change and be nice as far as I’m concerned.  The warmth of the sun would really be nice for the month.  Would help the flowers and gardens a lot too.  We’ll see what Mother Nature has in store for us.  We did have some cold, frosty days and it seems the wind is always a factor.  I never saw as much wind as we had on Thursday.  Was a good day for laundry outside on the line.  But……the wind was up to no good and took my clothes line down and everything was on the ground.  Luckily, everything was dry so no problem.    Let’s see what the next week brings.  It just has to get better.

Since I couldn’t be there, due to a horrible cold, I would personally like to thank those that met at the Pavilion on Sunday, May 1st, for park/pavilion clean-up for the up-coming mowing season.  This fantastic crew consisted of Maggie and Jason Brumwell, with his little BobCat; Janet Sell; Bob McGuire, Sr.; Les Isett; Clair Johnson II; J J Gato, Jr.; Chase, Jodi, Everlyn and Emerson Brumwell; Bryson Charles; Heather, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald and Kaeleigh’s boyfriend, CJ Molyneux; and Barb Bell.  Thank you for a job well done.  Took care of a lot of storm damage and got it all done before the rain came late afternoon.

TJ, Allison and Jase Lowden, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  They also spent time with his parents, Ted and Mary.

Next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 18th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Should, hopefully, be warm enough at that time.

I hear turkey season is in.  Hope you hunters bagged your bird.  Haven’t seen any here in the yards at all.  Guess they must be hiding in the woods away from the hunters.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner.  Are you planning something special for her?  Also, think of those who cannot be with us on that day.  Mothers come in all forms.  She can be someone who is like a Mom to you; someone who treats you like a special person to her.  She is just an all round great person.  If you have your Mom, be glad you do.  If you don’t have your Mom, think of all the good times you had with her while growing up.  Happy Mother’s Day to all.

Happy Birthday wishes to Ken Pochatko, 6th; Ted Lowden, 7th; Diane Fanning, 9th; Elizabeth Spinosa, 10th.  Hope you all have a grand day.

Did you know peppermint oil is great for allergy symptoms, such as drainage and coughing.  Diffuse the oil in a diffuser along with eucalyptus in your home to reduce allergy symptoms through out the day and night.  Something for me to try since I’ve been coughing.  Sure hope it helps.

Keep an eye on the Sully for events going on around the County.  There just might be something you’re interested in.  With the warmer weather, things and activities should start popping up.  You can also check Face Book.

Hopefully, the gardens and flower beds can be thought of soon.  Many I talked to said they don’t plant until after Memorial Day, due to all the frost we have.  And, we sure had frost the last week of April.  Some flowers I saw coming up out of the ground did not look so good.  The birds don’t know what to do.  The humming birds should arrive soon.  We usually see them around Mother’s Day.  Hopefully, that will be a sign of good things to come.

That’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; you may need an umbrella but no snow boots.  If you have news you’d like in the paper, please call me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; USPS mail; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I will get in in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

What a beautiful weekend after the April snow storm we had that dumped 12+ inches of snow and took our power out for 16 hours.  Hope everyone affected by the storm now has their power restored.   It was a nice weekend for all, especially those celebrating Orthodox Easter.  Hope you all had a Blessed time with family and friends.  On April 24th, 2014, there was a 28 degree temperature.  On April 24th, 2022, there was a 35 degree temperature.  By 3:30 in the afternoon it was up in the 70’s.  Perfect day.

There will be a work bee on Sunday, May 1st, 10:30 a.m. to do park clean up before mowing starts.  Meet at the Pavilion.  Take pride in your community and volunteer to help.  Many hands make light work.  Even if it’s only 15 minutes; whatever you can do will help.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent some time at their home on Church Street.  Had really nice weather while they were here so got a lot of outside yard work done.

Congratulations to Kyleigh McDonald for winning first place at the Art Contest for her grade.  Keep up the good work.

Some flowers are starting to push through the ground and bloom.  Some didn’t have much luck and didn’t make it because of the bad weather.  Soon it will also be time to start the gardens.  Just hope we get some nice weather for that and hope for a good crop this summer.

Next Civic meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 18th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion,  If the weather isn’t nice, we’ll meet at the Township Building.  Plans are trying to be made to have Old Home Day this year, the first Saturday in August.    Volunteers are still needed if we are to have a successful day.  You can contact, or see, Bob or JoAnn McGuire; Maggie or Jody Brumwell; or Heather McDonald  of your willingness to help.  Let’s make it happen this year!!

Do you have a bruise?  Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for one hour.  The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Happy Birthday to David Spinosa, 28th; and Abby Matychak, 30th.  Paige and Kyler Burke, May 1st; and JoAnn Day, 2nd.  Hope you all have a nice day.

There will be up-coming events listed in the Sully so keep an eye out for something you may be interested in.  There are also some things mentioned on Face Book too.  Nice weather coming, so things will start to happen.

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week.  Just hope we don’t have to use the snow shovel.  Have news get it to me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; snail mail; see me; or e-mail at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for all the comments I’ve gotten.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Hope you all had a nice Easter weekend.  Weather wasn’t the best for the weekend.  We had pouring rain on Saturday and a snow squall on Sunday.  Didn’t hamper the egg hunts and the family gatherings. The Easter bunny made it through the snow to surprise kids with nice baskets. Did hear we are to get a winter storm again.  Mother Nature is not being kind to us.  We need warm, sunny weather to stay.  Gardens and flower beds are wanting to be done.  I’ve seen some flowers trying to push through the ground, but not having much luck.  Hope for some nice, warm weather to help.

Having Easter Sunday dinner with Irene (Huray) Pequignot at her home on Church Street included Shawn, Dylon and Misty Pequignot; Hunter Laird; Jenel and Sophie Zeisloft; Kevin and Alyssa Pequignot; Brayson Siddle; Jennifer, Serenity and Alek Pequignot-Laird; Elexus Dunkleberger; and Mickey and Karen Bednar.  Nice family gathering.

Happy Birthday to Jon-Paul Matychak; 23rd; Katherine Kapler, 25th; and Mickey Mowery, 26th.  Have a nice day.

Recipe for weed killer.  Mix 1/2 gal of white vinegar, 1 cup Epsom Salts or table salt; 1/8 cup Dawn dish detergent in a bucket.  Stir and let settle for two minutes.  Pour into a LARGE spray bottle.  Shake well and spray weeds.  Soak the entire weed.  Let sit for a day or two and check and weeds should be dead.

Keep an eye on the Sully or Face Book to check up-coming events.  There may be something of interest.  Hopefully with the nicer weather coming, folks will start to come to spend time at their homes and cabins.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, even though you “may” have to use the snow shovel.  It HAS to warm up soon.  Have news, call me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on April 16, 2022 by Bob McGuireApril 16, 2022

Weather has been up and down again for the last week.  Here it is very early Monday morning and only 24 degrees and a frost.  I can see the sun trying to appear.  We had some nice days, some colder days, some rainy days and Sunday we had a snow squall.  Didn’t last long, but enough to cover the roof and the grass; then it was gone.  The weather is to be much better, I hope.

If Mother Nature cooperates and we get some nice weather, it will be time to think about getting the gardens and flowers ready to be planted.  Right now it’s muddy and the ground is so “squishy”.  We need a few days of nice sun and warmth to help things along.

Civic meeting on Wednesday, 20 April, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski spent the weekend in Allentown with her parents, Gerry and Paula, and helped her Mom celebrate her birthday.

Keep an eye on the Sully for activities that you might be interested in.  With nicer weather (I hope) on the way, things will start to take place.

Happy Birthday wishes to Kristin (Anderson) Iwancio, 15th; Pat Burd and Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, 17th; Roseanne Lukachik, 18th; and Holly Ann Sperry, 20th.  Have a nice day.

Hope everyone is well.  I hear there is a new virus coming or is here in some states; Pennsylvania being one of them.  I guess certain areas and places have the mask mandate back.   Stay safe; stay well.   Flu is still going around.   I guess we gotta do what we gotta do, to take care of these viruses.

Did you know you can use Vicks Vapor Rub for squeaky hinges?  Try it and see what happens.  Has many other neat uses also.

WD 40 can be used to spray the bird feeder poles to keep squirrels away.  But….sure won’t keep the bear away.  Lawn mowing season soon coming up, so use WD 40 to spray the underside of the mower to keep the grass from clogging.

Hope you all have a Blessed Easter on Sunday with family and friends.  Take time to think of those who cannot be with us during the Easter season.  Give thanks to those veterans and service men and women who can’t be with their families as they are keeping us safe.

That’s it for now.  Enjoy your week.  Hopefully the weather will take a turn for the best weather yet.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238, before 6 p.m. on Sunday evening; mail me; see me as I’m walking around town; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will put it in for you.  Thanks and I’ll be here next time.

Hope you all had an enjoyable week.  The weather really was up and down.  Cold and windy with temps in the teens; warm, nice and sunny.  Had a couple of power outages but not for long.  I really feel bad for those in Lairdsville that were affected by the tornado that went through.  So sad and such devastation.  Was a big loss for those involved.

Mother Nature is still playing with us and wish she’d get on the same page we are on and get rid of this miserable weather.

One of our Lopez residents, Travis Sperry, lost his home and everything in a house fire on Wednesday.  Any help you can give will be so appreciated.  Clothing and sizes are:  Jeans – 30×30; Shirts – Large; Shoes – Size 10; winter coat, jacket, and hoodie – Size Large.  Anything else you may have would also be great.  He has nothing right now.  It was all lost in the fire.  Thank you in advance.

Hope everyone is well.  There are a lot of colds going around.  The weather being up and down sure doesn’t help.

I think some of the Borick clan were in over the weekend.  I saw activity down there.  The weather wasn’t the best but they always have a good time here.

Remember, the next Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, the 20th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Hope you can make it.  Have some important things to take care of.

If you’re in the woods or tall grass, be aware of ticks.  They are plentiful this year.  A friend has a white dog and can easily see all of them when she comes in from outside.  She was hoping to get a black dog but now is glad they had no black and took white.

Did you know you can use oatmeal for other than eating?  It can be used for fast pain relief of arthritis by Mixing 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl  that has been warmed in the microwave for one minute.  Cool slightly and apply the mixture to your hands for the soothing relief of the arthritis pain.  Wonder if it would work for sore feet as well.

Wish the weather would warm up.  Will be time to start thinking of gardens and flowers.  I did see some daffodils trying to peek through the ground but weren’t having much luck.  I haven’t seen any crocuses so far.  Too many frosty days.

Palm Sunday will be this coming Sunday, the 10th.  The month is passing by quickly already.  I guess pretty soon the Easter Bunny will be around too since Easter will be the following Sunday.   Hope you have your Easter bonnet all ready to wear.  Pretty soon it will be time to color the eggs.

The bear won’t let us feed the birds, so haven’t seen them around much lately.

The week of March 27th through April 2nd we had temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s.   What happened here?  We sure didn’t have those temps.  Twelve degrees is pretty darn cold.

Happy Birthday to Shawn Pequignot, 6th; Jaron Williams, 11th; John Risser, 12th; and Joyce Walsh, 13th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Sheldon and Penny (Benjamin) Sperry as they celebrate on the 13th.  Enjoy and many more your way.

That’s it.  Enjoy your week.  Supposed to be warmer but rain predicted almost every day.  Just hope it’s not snow.  Have news, get it to me before 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on April 2, 2022 by Bob McGuireApril 2, 2022

Good morning!!  It’s 6 a.m. on Monday morning and it’s a “balmy” 12 degrees and windy.  I think Mother Nature is still giving us some bad weather.  March is going out like a lion.  The week was up and down in temperature and the wind just never seems to quit blowing.  Sunday was cold, windy and snowy off and on.  We still do have a few days for her to get with the program and give us some nice weather.

Bob and I were at our 52nd Annual Che-Hanna Gem and Mineral show over the weekend, held at the Wysox Fire Hall.  Had a great turn out and I think everyone had an enjoyable time.  Even saw some folks from Sullivan County.  With the weather not being so nice, more came to the show, rather than do outside work.  We had a great number of kids who enjoyed the mini mine and cabochon making.  Everyone liked the geode cutting where you saw what was in the rock when  it was cut open.   UVBOB did fluorescent mineral presentations and Anna did programs on fossils and dinosaurs.  The educational displays were a hit and people got to purchase some really nice things from the eleven dealers we had there.  All in all, was a great show.  Hope to see you at next year’s show the Fourth weekend in March.

The bear was back at our house over night on Friday night.  Got up Saturday morning and our bird feed was on the ground, smashed so not even fixable.  Took down the two suet feeders before he got them too.  Our son said the bear was at his house and took down his suet feeders he had hanging on the porch.  I’m sure he was at other places too.

With the warmer weather coming, I hope, here is something to do, especially with wearing of sandals.  Get rid of toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash.  The powerful antiseptic leaves your toes looking healthy again.   That’s one that will have to be tried.

I wasn’t home over the weekend so don’t really know who was around or what went on.  I just know it was COLD and WINDY.   Most probably just hunkered down at home, unless they went to the Che-Hanna show.

You can always keep an eye on the Sully for up-coming activities going on around the County.  Someone mentioned fishing season started.  A good person’s news to get all that information is Linda Riebe who writes the Forksville news.  She’s a wealth of information when it comes to that.  Connie Hatch is another good one.  She writes the Estella news.  She’ll even tell you about the evil chipmunks and other little animals she has at her house.

Happy Birthday to V Rev Andrew Matychak who celebrates on April 5th.   Hope you have a nice day.

B’s Gang says Happy Birthday and many more to Tim Higley on April 1st.  And, that” no April Fool’s joke.

Happy Anniversary to Julio and Mary (Maximiek) Santiago who celebrate their anniversary on the 5th.  Have a great day and many more.

I think that’s about it for now.  Enjoy your week, even if it’s a little chilly.  It HAS to warm up soon.  Have news call me, before 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.   I will be here next time and thanks for reading.   Comments are always welcome.   Stay warm; stay safe.

Lopez, PA Posted on March 24, 2022 by Bob McGuireMarch 24, 2022

Our weather was pretty decent last week.  Friday and Saturday were super nice with higher temperatures, sunny and warm.  I see the robins had come back, after going somewhere warmer when we had the colder days.  We did have some rain on Sunday but not what was predicted.  On this date, the 20th, Mr. Neubauer’s little blue book tells me it was sunny and cold and only 16 degrees.  We did much better than that.  Sunday was the first day of Spring, so hope that’s a good sign.  Saw a huge flock of red wing blackbirds in the yards over the weekend.   Hope you all had an enjoyable weekend.

If you want something to do this weekend, Saturday, the 26th and Sunday, the 27th, take a ride to the Wysox Volunteer Fire Company and see what the 52nd annual Che-Hanna Gem and Mineral Show is all about.  Times are 9-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.  There will be educational displays, geode cutting, cabachon making, mini mine for the kids.  UVBOB will also be doing fluorescent mineral programs both days.  Dealers will be selling all kinds of minerals, fossils and a little bit of everything.  Something for everyone.   Hope to see you there.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  To order, call 570-928-8909.

With the nicer weather, maybe we’ll see more folks out and about.  Time to think of the gardens,  flower beds and lawn mowing soon.  I don’t think we’ll have to be wearing winter coats at that time.   Sure hope we don’t get any more frosts or cold and snow.

Civic meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 20th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

Formula 409 is not only a cleaning agent.  If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can’t find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409.  Insects drop to the ground instantly.

I see there was mention of trout season coming up, so keep an eye on the Sully to find these dates.  There also may be other things you might be interested in.  With the better weather, there will start to be more things going on in the County.

Happy Birthday to Aaron Kinsey, 21st; Irene (Kravitz) Risser, 28th; Heather McDonald and Trevor Kinsey, 30th.  Have a good day.

When you go to the Lopez  Post Office to get your mail, wish our Post Mistress, Alissa, a very Happy Birthday.  Hope you had a good day.  Hers was on the 21st.

Guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week.  It has to get better and better.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  Do this by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on March 16, 2022 by Bob McGuireMarch 16, 2022

Well, I guess Mother Nature still had it in for us with the doozy of a storm she handed us on Saturday.  It was so windy, cold and at least 9 inches of snow.  Hard to tell exactly as the wind blew it into drifts all day.   We see some geese flying North on Friday and they probably wished they had stayed South a little longer.   I did hear it’s to warm up during the week, but with a little rain.  That’s better than snow and ice.  We’ll see if Mother Nature is going to give us a nice shower or give us pouring rain and flooding.  I’m so ready for warm weather.  On March 13, 2016 the temperature was 22 degrees.  We were a far cry from that on the same date this year.

With this crazy, cold weather, if you have a sore throat mix 1/4 vinegar with 1/4 of honey and take a tablespoon six times a day.  The vinegar kills the bacteria.

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up on the 17th and hope you all have a very green day and good time, whatever you do.  Just don’t over-do.

Don’t forget, the 52nd annual Che-Hanna Mineral Show is coming up on Saturday, March 26th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Lots of mineral dealers, mini mine for the kids, geode cutting, cabochon making, educational displays and UV presentations by UVBOB.   Hope to see you there.

Happy Birthday wishes to Gianna Mae DiRocco, 14th; Kathy Isett, 15th; Don Risser and Sheryln Dendler, 17th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Brian McGuire sends birthday greetings to wifey #1, Steph Putnam, on the 17th and wifey #2, Kristin (Putnam) Carter, on the 18th.  Hope you both have a great day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Lori Higley as she celebrates on the 19th.  Have a super day.

Keep a check on the Sully for up-coming events.  Summer, hopefully, will be here soon and there will be all kinds of things going on that you might be interested in.

I guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Have news, call me before 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.

Hope everyone is feeling well.  If not, I send well wishes to get better soon.  Take care and thanks for reading.

MARCH 9, 2022

Lopez, PA Posted on March 10, 2022 by Bob McGuireMarch 10, 2022

Hope you all had a nice weekend.  Sunday was the best!  It was 24 degrees early morning and by afternoon it went up to 65 degrees.  Lots of sunshine and warm wind for a change.  Heather McDonald saw some geese going North on Tuesday late afternoon and then Mike saw a big flock on Saturday.  I saw a bunch of robins and red wing blackbirds on Sunday.  Let’s hope this is a good sign.  We are so ready for warm weather to come and stay.   On Sunday, 6 March 2015 it was minus 16 so we did good.

In last week’s news, I failed to mention someone who was such a big help at the Christmas party.  Barbara Bell really loves kids and did an excellent job at the Hall with the kids while waiting for Santa.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month, from noon to 1 p.m., available at the Church Hall.  Call 570-928-8909 to order.

Congratulations to Tyler McGuire for making the Dean’s List for the Fall semester at RIT in Rochester, NY.  He is enrolled in the software engineering class.

Second marking period congratulations to the following for a job well done.  Distinguished Honors:  Kaeleigh McDonald.

Honors:  Serena Armioia; Ruby Malkemes; and Bruno Day.  Keep up the good work.  If I’ve missed anyone, please let me know and I will add you also.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home here.  Enjoyed a little bit of nice weather and probably got some snow and ice taken care of.

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and many friends of Carmela Walosin who passed away on Sunday afternoon, the 6th.  What a friend to all; always smiling and so nice to visit with.  She will be missed.

Civic meeting will be on Wednesday, April 20th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Please attend.  We have some major decisions to make at that time.

Happy Belated birthday to Linda (Hallabuk) Baton who celebrated on March 8th.  Hope it was a good day.

Happy Birthday to Julian Bonner, 11; Bob McGuire, Sr., and Theresa Pochatko, 13th; and Elizabeth Weisbrod, 14th.  Have a nice day.

Here’s a good one for the kids to remove splinters.  Just pour a drop of Elmer’s Glue all over the splinter; let dry and peel the dried glue off the skin.  The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

FLASH:  Don’t forget March 13th to turn your clocks one hour AHEAD because of Daylight Savings Time.

Now that the weather is getting nicer, we may see more folks out and about and some of the cabins occupied.

Nina Weslowski spent a recent weekend with her parents, Gerry and Paula.  They all had an enjoyable time visiting her grandmother in Boston, MA.

Keep an eye on the Sully for up-coming events.  There may be something to spark your interest,

I think that’s all I have for now.  Enjoy your week.  We shall see what kind of weather Mother Nature has in store for us.

Have news call me before 6 p.m.; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on March 1, 2022 by Bob McGuireMarch 1, 2022

Well, I guess Spring is not around the corner for us with the cold, windy, snowy temperatures we’ve been having.  I see it is to warm up and hope it’s soon.

With all the stuff going on over Christmas, I failed to mention a few folks who were instrumental in putting together the Christmas party for the Lopez kids.  Chase and Jody Brumwell; Maggie Brumwell; Pat Arcaro; Les and Kathy Isett; and Linda Patson did an amazing job and the kids loved it.  Santa even stopped by to visit with the kids and hand out gifts.  Thank you to Jason Bahr for taking care of the garbage.  It is all very much appreciated.  Thank you for a really good time.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month at the Church Hall, from Noon to 1 p.m.  To order, call 570-928-8909.

This has been in before, but I think its a good reminder again for this time of year.  For icy sidewalks and driveways:  1/4 cup alcohol, 6 drops liquid dish soap, 1/2 gallon water.  Mix in a bucket and pour on sidewalks and driveway.  Be sure to sweep any excess of water to prevent re-freezing.

Thank you Lois McCarty who called me to tell me that she keeps her lettuce wrapped in aluminum foil also.  She said it keeps good for up to 6 weeks.  She also does celery, but not the cucumbers.  She likes fresh cucumbers in the summer.

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and friends of Emily (Millie) Andrewlavage who passed away on the 17th of February.  She was born in Lopez and lived here many years.  She recently was living in New Jersey.  Funeral was held on the 26th, at St. Vladimir’s Church, with Rev. Dennis Hendershot, and burial in the parish cemetery.

Did you know that the Tick Research Laboratory of PA says that ticks can live during the cold weather months, so no break for us.  Snow coverage acts as a giant quilt to keep ticks warm under leaf litter.  They are less prevalent, but keep an eye out, especially when hunting or working outside.

The 52nd annual Che-Hanna Gem and Mineral show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 26 and 27 at the Wysox Volunteer Fire Hall.  This will be from 9-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.  There will be educational displays, geode cutting, cabochon making, Fluorescent mineral programs by UV Bob, mini mine for the kids and many dealers with fossils, minerals and all kinds of goodies.  There will also be a fossil and artifact exhibit by Susquehanna River Archaeological Center.  Fun for all.  Hope to see you there.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, the Mildred Active Living Center at St. Francis Hall, will not be opened as planned on March 1st.  The COVID pandemic and labor shortages presented some challenges to the SBBT Agency on Aging.  They are working in earnest to recruit personnel and acquire additional equipment.  There will be a future opening date.  They thank you for your patience and will keep in touch with everyone.

Did you know if you add two drops of peppermint oil to your regular shampoo and massage your scalp as you shower,  it will get rid of dandruff.  Peppermint oil possesses antifungal and antimicrobial properties that make it excellent for combating dandruff.

Happy Birthday to Anthony Sneidar, March 1st; Keene Vinetelli 5th; Bethany Dendler, 6th; Janelle Day, 9th; Ruby Malkemes and Rally Rose (McGee) Tierney, 10th.  Hope you all have a really nice day.

Hope you all are over your flu, colds and Covid and feeling much better.  Hopefully with the warm weather, it will make everyone feel good.  I did hear we are in for some warmer days this week.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Have news, call me by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading, comments, and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on March 1, 2022 by Bob McGuireMarch 1, 2022

We sure have had some crazy weather.  Cold, windy days; some warmer days.  Power outage for six and a half hours on Friday.  Pouring down rain and a snow squall that was like a blizzard.  We had it all.   Last I heard we are to get a storm Thursday night into Friday with quite a lot of snow coming.  Guess it’s still winter.  Fifty degrees in February is rare so take it while it’s here.  With the cold weather, all the germs should be gone.  Hope you all are well and not bothered with virus or flu.  Warm weather is on the way, some day.

Hope you all had a good President’s Day holiday.  I know there were quite a few things that went on in the County over that weekend and hope you enjoyed whatever you did.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale the first and third Sunday of the month.  They can be picked up at the Church Hall from Noon to 1 p.m.  Call 570-928-8909 to order.

With the horrible wind that we’ve had, the drone in the park got quite tilted.  Maybe it was going on a trip.  Anyway, thanks to the guys who put it back right and hopefully it won’t tip again.   Good job much appreciated.

I mentioned in my column last week that the aluminum foil worked well for cucumbers but I wasn’t impressed with the lettuce.  I got a call from Ed and Linda Thall and they enjoy those tidbits and she said she has no problem with the lettuce.  Said it also works well for celery.  So, in talking, she mentioned to put the dull side of the foil against the lettuce.  I tried that and it is working much better.  Must be something with the shiny side it won’t work.  Thanks for your comments and glad you enjoy the tips.

Happy Birthday wishes to Bob McGuire, Jr. and Christopher Sneidar who both celebrate on the 26th.   Have a nice day.

There will probably be activities going on in the County, so keep an eye on the Sully and also the Sullivan County News and Bulletin Board on Face Book.  There may be something you’d be interested in.

On Sunday, the 20th, in 1978, it was clear and cold and 22 degrees, according to Mr. Neubauer’s little blue book.  I like to look back at these little bits of information.

Here’s a tip for a cold remedy.  Need this for this time of year.  To hot tomato juice, add the juice of one or two garlic cloves, the juice of half a lemon, and about 1/16 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.  Drink!  The results are amazing and sure to fight off any cold with force and speed.   Wow!  That sounds potent but will try it if I get sick and see if it helps.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week, going to have a couple of nice days, then stormy again.  We can handle it  Spring is just around the corner, somewhere.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; snail mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Please give me any news by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on February 20, 2022 by Bob McGuireFebruary 20, 2022

Hope you all had a nice Valentine’s Day weekend with loved ones.  The weather has been up and down again.  Nice, then not so nice.  It did warm up really well a couple of days and that got really cold over night.  The snow and ice are still with us.  Finally was able to chop some of the ice, but some is just too thick yet.  Hopefully, warmer weather will come and stay.  Was quite cold a few days and with the ice and snow, it was great for sledding.  It’s gotten too soft now to do that, unless it gets very cold again and stays.

I imagine all of you who watched the Super Bowl had a great time and hope your team won.  I’m not into football so had no interest in it at all.

TJ, Allison, and Jase Lowden, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, spent the weekend at their home here and visited his parents, Ted and Mary on Maple Terrace.

A few weeks ago I mentioned something about wrapping your lettuce and cucumbers in aluminum foil to last longer.  Well, I tried it.  It did not work for the lettuce.  It still turned brown.  I was impressed with the cucumbers.  They did quite well.  So, you don’t know these things you hear about or read until you try.  I will keep my lettuce out of the aluminum foil.    Have to see if I come across anything else that might be of interest to try.

Hope everyone is feeling good.  Maybe the flu and viruses are passing us by.  Reports are that there are not as many cases, so that’s a good thing.  Still have to be cautious.  Get well wishes to anyone who is under the weather and hope you feel better soon.

Happy Birthday to Khloie Bahr, 19th; Clair Johnson II, 20th; Armond Spinosa, 22nd; and Jacob Williams, 23.  Have a nice day.

Don’t have a whole lot of news.  Watch the Sully for up-coming events you might be interested in.   With the crazy, cold, windy weather for a few days, I wasn’t out much at all.  Maybe when the weather gets much better, folks will start coming to their cabins and homes to enjoy time here.

I’m thinking, as of right now, weather permitting, the first Civic meeting of the New Year will be held on Wednesday, March 16th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  If it’s bad weather, it will not be held until April.   I will keep you up-dated.

Have you been reading the poems that Linda (Hallabuk)  Baton has been submitting to the Sully.  I really enjoy them.  She is a former Lopez resident, born and raised here and now lives in Forksville.  Hope she keeps sending them.

Well, time to close for now.  Hope you enjoy your week, whatever you have up your sleeve.  Might be rather nice for a change.  Have news, let me know by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening by calling 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Have a great week and I’ll be here next time.  Thanks for reading and comments are always welcome.
