Getting some really nice weather. I guess the storm they had predicted has stayed out along the coast and the week’s weather is to be warm and sunny. The geese are still flying North and I’ve seen many robins now, so hope that’s a good sign. Kids will be excited with only four days of school this week and then it’s Easter vacation. Just hope the weather is in their favor and not cold, windy and snowy. Never know if we’re done with snow or not; a storm can pop up any time.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home on Church Street and got some Spring yard work done.

Cory McDonald, Wakefield, RI, is spending the Easter holiday with family and friends. Get well to Kaeleigh McDonald who was feeling “under the weather”. Hope she’s feeling much better.

The Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show, held over the weekend was another success with lots of interesting and educational things taking place, including UVBOB and his fluorescent mineral presentations. Get well to him; he caught a really bad cold so came home after closing on Sunday, went straight to bed; hopefully the cold and aches won’t last too long. If you were able to attend the show, I hope you had an enjoyable time.

HINT: “Instead of using a spray and a streaky cloth, use only newspaper to clean off your mirrors and windows for a streak-free finish.” (I just heard that someone does this and works really well.)

Good Friday is coming up this week and then Easter on Sunday. Hope the Easter bunny gets to visit you and will leave some nice treats. Have a Blessed Easter with family and friends.

Another nice weekend. On Thursday we saw BIG flocks of geese going over. The weather was warm, sunny, breezy and temperatures in the 60’s, which felt really good. Did have rain showers on Thursday. I just hope we’re done with the snow and cold. Did you all remember to turn your clocks ahead on Sunday? I guess I had a blonde moment….not a senior moment…..I turned mine back and realized later I moved the hands the wrong way. I finally did see three robins early in the week, so I guess they are around and maybe that’s another good sign of Spring.
I must apologize to Layton Shea. I missed him for both marking periods and he made Distinguished Honors both times. Sorry, Layton, and I’ll try to remember next time. Gotta remember, you’re a Lopezian now.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, spent a nice Saturday visiting her mother, Mrs. Irene Huray, Church Street.

Bob and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski on Friday. Had a nice time and got to fly Tyler’s balsa airplane. Just enough breeze to have it go really good. They all helped Bob, Sr., celebrate his birthday.

HEADS UP!!! There WILL be a Civic meeting on Tuesday, April 19th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building. Mark your calendar now and hope to see you there. Lots of up-coming things to discuss.

Easter is almost here. This weekend will be Palm Sunday and next weekend is Easter already. Hope the Easter bunny makes it to your house.

Congratulations to Gaige Burke for winning the Easter coloring contest at Ally Bell’s on Sunday.

The 47th Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show is coming up this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th. This is held at the Athens Township Fire Hall, Sayre. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There will be educational exhibits by club members; Indian artifacts; a special exhibit and silent auction by Marc Wilson from Carnegie Museum; an exhibit by Paleontological Research Institute and fossil ID by Bill Klose from the Institute; cabochon making; geode cutting; mini-mine for the kids; and UVBOB will have fluorescent mineral programs. Food will also be available. Hope you can come see what it’s all about.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Marlton, NJ, spent a few days at their home on Maple Terrace. They also brought along Willie, their new addition to the family.

HINT: “Adding coconut oil to your dog’s food will help to get rid of ticks and fleas.” (Don’t know how, but I was told it does work.)

Another nice weekend and more coming for the week. Saturday was 7 degrees early, then warmed up; Sunday was 11 degrees early and only warmed up to 40 during the day and the wind had a little “bite” to it; not as warm as last weekend, but getting there. Can you believe it’s supposed to hit 60+ by Wednesday. I’ll take it. We’ve seen flocks of geese flying North, so that’s a good sign, right? Mike McDonald family has seen robins twice so that’s another good sign, right? Let’s hope so.

FLASH: Don’t forget that Sunday is SPRING ahead for your clocks. Make sure you remember to do that so you won’t be late wherever you might have to go.

Tony and Patti Sneidar, Philly, spent a few days at their home on Church Street and enjoyed the nice weather.

The 47th annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club show is coming up. Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 19th and Sunday, March 20th. The show is held at the Athens Volunteer Fire Company in Sayre. Times are Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be educational exhibits, dealers with a variety of things they sell, Carnegie Museum will have a spectacular display, PRI will have fossil identification, UVBOB will have fluorescent mineral programs, there will be a mini-mine for the kids, and there will be food available. Gee, before long we will be celebrating the Easter holiday. Time seems to keep rolling along; hardly seems like the month of March will be over so soon.

HINT: “Vinegar is a great way to keep frost from forming on your car windows. Spray the outside of your windows with a mixture of three parts white vinegar to 1 part water.” (We still have some frosty days, so will have to try this and see if it does work.)

I know there are probably some other things going on around the County, so check the Sully to see what you might be interested in. Was too bad that the winter didn’t allow for the Eagles Mere toboggan slide this year. That is a major fund raiser for them, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate.

Another nice weekend. Saturday and Sunday were both in the 50+ degree range. Is winter finally over?? I hope so. On Wednesday, of course we had to have another storm. It was worse than the week before. I never heard such thunder and the pounding rain, along with the high winds and lightning. There was a tornado that went through part of Wyalusing and I thought sure it came through here. We’ve been pretty lucky so far this year. Maybe that groundhog is right this time and we’ll get an early Spring. Never know what Mother Nature has in store for us, but we can hope. One weatherman on TV said “winter is not over yet”, but I hope he’s wrong.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, visited Bob and JoAnn McGuire, Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski on Friday evening. Had a nice birthday celebration for Jr. with Chef “B” doing the grilling, providing snacks and even ice cream. Another year down the tubes and hope he has many more good years ahead.

Sympathy from the community to the relatives and friends of Rose Decker who passed away on the 23rd. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, the 29th, at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with Rev. Richard Rojas officiating. Burial was in SS Peter and Paul Byzantine Cemetery, Lopez.

Gee, we have to remember that Daylight Savings Time is fast approaching. I just mention it now, but will mention it when it’s close and time to move our clocks ahead one hour.

On Sunday, Bob and JoAnn McGuire were invited by Rebecca Nauta, Bear Den Leader of Cub Scout Pack 30, in Columbia Crossroads, to come and have Bob do a mineral presentation to the 29 Scouts and their relatives. There were Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos in attendance. This was a Pack meeting and the kids are given advancement awards they’ve earned. They also do some special programs. This was different types of skits and games. They also had pizza and a birthday cake since February is the birthday of the Scout program. The meeting was held at Bradley Hall in Columbia Cross Roads. Was a fun, interesting and educational time for everyone.

HINT: “If you have stuck on food on your pans or casserole dishes, use some baking soda and white vinegar; let the dirty pans soak for a while and then wash; comes right off. You will see the soda fizz in the vinegar. Can also be used to clean your stove top.” (I met a new friend over the weekend and Gary tells me he has done this and it does work. Thanks, Gary.)

The Kiwanas Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show on Monday, March 7th. If you’ve never been, I’ve heard it is really a wonderful thing to attend and so much to see.

What a great weekend! The weather was beautiful both Saturday and Sunday. Was up to 56 degrees on Saturday and 50 degrees on Sunday, with lots of sunshine and warm breezes. I could take more of this for sure. Made it nice for folks to be out and about, taking walks, doing odd things in the yard and even doing some quad riding. We’ll see what the week brings. I did hear rain, sleet and snow again for Tuesday into Wednesday, with heavy rain again on Thursday. Hope it’s wrong.

Joe and Diane (Charnik), along with Molly, Landenberg, and her cousin, Charlotte Grant, Bear, DE, spent a few days at their home on Church Street. Had a nice time with the weather being so cooperative.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire spent last Tuesday and Wednesday with Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, while his Dad, Jr., went on a work related trip to Philadelphia. Had a nice time with him. He was even our chef for dinner one night and did a good job.

Second marking period, Distinguished Honor Roll, includes Kyler Burke, Madison Burke, and Aaron Kinsey. Honor Roll was Paige Burke, Jaeden Patson, Trevor Kinsey and Kassidy Brown. Congratulations to all for a job well done.

B’s gang says congratulations to Matt Hetsko, and Miguel “Slick” Rodriguez for Honor Roll status also. Uncle “B” says “good job” to Tyler McGuire for making High Honors at his school, Lake Lehman Junior-Senior High School.

Jordan Schnabel, Allentown, enjoyed a nice weekend with Nina Weslowski and Brian McGuire. Weather was great for a good time outdoors. All had fun.

Good Lord!!!! The weekend was the worst one so far. Had terrible winds, cold, some snow, more wind, more cold. Was only four degrees on Saturday and was MINUS 10 degrees on Sunday. Last I heard, the first three days of the week are not to be too good. Hope that’s wrong. We need a warm up. It sure was cold for the Winterfest activities over the weekend, but I imagine there were many, many brave soles who attended, no matter the temperature. Well, the Groundhog said early Spring, so I hope he’s right. I certainly won’t mind. Hope you all had a really nice Valentine’s Day, despite the cold.

TJ and Allison Lowden, Marlton, NJ, along with their new puppy, Wesson, spent the Holiday weekend at their home on Church Street. Allison’s brother, Jeff Corbin and his girlfriend, Megan Thomas, Marlton, NJ, also were here with them. This was Wesson’s first trip to Lopez. He’ll get used to the cold pretty fast if he comes here often.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, spent a few days in NJ and came back with a new addition to the family. They are now the proud owners of “Willy”, and he’s a cutie.

Mark your calendar. The Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club’s 47th annual mineral and gem show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th. This is held at the Athens Township Fire Hall in Sayre and has something for everyone. There are educational displays, many different dealers, geode cutting, cabochon making, fluorescent programs by UVBOB, and food. Hope to see you there.

HINT: “When letting your pots and pans soak, throw in one or two Alka Seltzer tablets and the caked on residue from cooking will come off easily when you wash the pot or pan.”

HINT: “Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into eight ounces of water to soothe your stomach and relieve diarrhea. The taste may not be the greatest, but the antibacterial properties of the vinegar will end the unpleasantness of the bowel problems.” (With flu bugs going around, this might be a good one to try when the “event” occurs.)

Can’t complain about the nice weather we’ve been having. Last Monday was 52 degrees, sunny and warm. I hung the laundry out on the line and it dried. That was awesome. Hadn’t done that for months. I hear we may be getting a “little” snow, but most of the storms are going to stay out along the coast. New York, New Jersey, DC and Maryland can have it all. We’ve been pretty lucky so far this year.

Due to the warm weather, there will be no toboggan slide in Eagles Mere this year. That’s the sad part about the weather since this is a major fund raiser for the Eagles Mere Fire Company and they depend on the cold weather to make the slide.

Sympathy from the community to the family and friends of Steve Gulich, Sr., who passed away on January 31st. Funeral was held on February 4th at St. Vladimir’s Church, with burial in the parish cemetery. Rev. Dennis Hendershot presided. Steve was a good member of the community and visited with anyone he’d see while walking to town every day to pick up his mail. He will be missed by all who got to know him.

Visiting Mrs. Irene Huray on Saturday was her daughter, Irene Pequignot and her grandson, Kevin Pequignot.

Don’t forget……..Winterfest is coming up on the weekend. Lots of things planned for the weekend, so take a ride to Camp Brule and enjoy the fun. Take part in the Polar Bear plunge; check out the ice carving, the live auction, the human dog sled races, and many more things that will be going on. I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Sunday is Valentine’s Day so enjoy the day with loved ones. Do something special for someone, just because.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book: February 7, 1978 – Cloudy, cold, flurries and 10 degrees. On that date, now, we had sun, little wind and 10 degrees early, but did warm up to 40 degrees later in the day. I think one of these days we’ll get snow and cold and it will be here a while. But…………maybe not. Maybe we’ll get an early Spring. There are conflicting reports that the groundhog saw his shadow, he didn’t see his shadow, so I’ll just wait and see what happens.

I’ve had people tell me they like the weather reports I give in my column. They know how to dress and what to bring to the area if they’re coming for a weekend or a few days, so they enjoy that.

I just can’t believe the nice weather we’ve been having. The weekend was great. Sunday was warmer than Saturday, with 28 degrees early in the morning and warming up to 54 degrees in the afternoon, with lots of sunshine and not much wind. At 11 p.m. it was still above 40 degrees. I did hear there “may” be a coastal storm coming on the 10th of February. That’s close to Valentine’s Day when some folks say there is usually a storm at that time. We’ll have to wait and see, but maybe it will miss us again. Really can’t complain of the winter we’ve had so far. Many people are noticing that some of their trees and bushes are budding. Only hope they don’t get frozen and not bloom for the summer time to enjoy.

Had a nice visit with Chris Cokos in Dushore one day last week. He’s alive and well and has his wits about him and still has his great sense of humor. Was nice to see him out and about. Said to let everyone know he’s doing well.

No snow to go sledding, skiing, or snowmobiling, so I see lots riders out and about on their quads, enjoying the nice weather.

Weekend wasn’t too bad. Saturday we had some sprinkles. Sunday we had a light dusting of snow. Just enough to cover the roads and the grass. Last I heard, it’s to be nice during the week until Friday, when someone said a BIG storm is coming our way. We’ll see what happens. It’s kind of early to tell, since the weatherman can’t predict tomorrow. The temperatures have been pretty cool to start the day, but does warm up pretty nice. Haven’t had a lot of sun, so makes for a dreary day. I know those that like to snowmobile, ski or do some sledding are really ready for more snow. I guess there are some four wheelers still out and about with the better weather.

Congratulations to Jaron Williams for making the Dean’s list at Penn College in Williamsport for the Fall of 2015, Bachelor of Science, Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. Good job, Jaron.

Jerry and Paula Weslowski, Allentown, spent the weekend with their daughter, Nina Weslowski and Brian McGuire, Main Street. An enjoyable time for everyone.

HINT: “To shine up your dull wood paneling, mix one pint warm water with four tablespoons white or apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons olive oil. Put on with a cloth and let the mixture soak in for a few minutes and then polish.”

Winterfest is coming up on President’s Day weekend, February 13 and 14, held at Camp Brule. You can brave the cold and do the Polar Bear plunge, along with many other activities planned. Mark your calendar now and take part in Winterfest.

The 47th annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club show will be coming up in March. This year it will be on Saturday, March 19th, and Sunday, March 20th. It’s held at the Athens Township Vol. Fire Hall in Sayre. Watch the Sully for more information and there will be posters placed in various areas around the County. Mark your calendar for this event.

Have been having some pretty nice weather for a few days. The weekend wasn’t too bad. We did have some heavy rain at times, but it was sunny, warm and 52 degrees. From what I heard, we’re in for some stormy weather during the week, with a lot of cold coming. Guess we have to expect that. After all………….it is winter…………..as I was told. I would take the nice weather from now until April and then warm up for the summer. Don’t think that will happen, but I can dream. The McDonald’s saw a rainbow on Sunday. Was pretty neat from the pictures I saw, but I missed this one. On Sunday afternoon the creek looked pretty high and was rumbling along really fast.

Hope everyone is well and not bothered with flu bugs and colds.

Congratulations to Chloe Shea for being selected Student of the Month. Keep up the good work.

Don’t really have a lot of news to report right now. Not a lot going on here in Lopez, but I know elsewhere there were “doings” to attend.

Thanks to Brian McGuire for taking the Christmas display back to the Pavilion for the winter. Job well done. Also, to Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald who helped with the cords and flowers.

Remember, NO Civic meeting for the month of January.

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and wish all of you a very Happy, Healthy New Year. Let’s hope it good for everyone. The weather was perfect for travel over the Holidays, so hope you all got to where you wanted to be. I hear the weather for the middle of the week is to get warm again, with temperatures in the 40’s. Sounds good to me.

There will be NO Civic meeting in the month of January. Watch my news for the next meeting, or you may get a call about one.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, enjoyed some time over the New Year Holiday at their home on Church Street. Joe saw a bald eagle while he was outside the one day. Tried to get the camera, but not in time to get a picture. We were invited up for dinner on Saturday and had a delicious meal and good time visiting and catching up.

Tony and Patti Sneidar, along with Forest, Philadelphia, spent some time over New Year’s at their home on Church Street and enjoyed visiting friends while they were here. Tony did some hunting, but don’t know if he was successful.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent the Christmas Holiday with her daughter, Irene Pequignot, Linden; Shawn Pequignot family, Jennifer Pequignot family and Kevin Pequignot family.

Congratulations to Jeffrey and Kristin (McDonald) Mensch on the birth of their first baby. Hailey Lou Mensch was born on December 22, 2015 and weighed 9 lb. 11 oz. and was 22 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Mike and Heather McDonald, Rose McDonald and Rick Weist. Paternal grandparents are Jeff and Holly Mensch. Great grandparents are Pat and Tim O’Conner, Joe and Joan McDonald, Harvey Vough and Ron and Janet Mensch. Aunts include Nicky Brennan, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald and Uncle Cory McDonald. This is going to be one spoiled baby, I know. Lots of luck and fun with the new little one.

Still having pretty nice weather most of the day. The mornings start out really cold and sometimes very windy, but guess we can put up with that. We had a “few” of those little “white” things come down, but nothing to speak of. Hope they stay away. Heard Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are to be super and I’ll go for that. I do feel bad for the ski lodges and folks who like to get out and ski, snowboard and go snowmobiling. But……I don’t feel “that” bad. We’ll get ours…………..in due time.

Got the following e-mail to share. “Hello, Jim Glasson, Sr., here, from Tall Timbers Hunting Club, located in Lopez since 1980. This year we had nine hunters in the club make it up. Those included Jim Glasson, Sr. (President); Jim Glasson, Jr., who harvested a beautiful six pointer on opening day, estimated weight 180 pounds; Jim’s brothers, John and Tom; and members Tim Callahan, Sr. and his son Tim, Jr. They all hunted. Also there was Gary Shafer and his brother-in-law, Bill Moyer, who joined the Club this year. Jeff Ellershaw, who is a member, hunted very hard. Unfortunately, the unseasonably warm weather didn’t cooperate. Saw plenty of grouse and four bear, but no shots. We had long time friend, Tony Sneidar from Church Street and his friends stop down to visit, along with the Ten Point Club, from Flat Street. This included Oats, Bob, Tubby, Tommy and many more. We spent lots of time playing cards and reminiscing about all the great times we’ve had hunting since 1978 and remembered visiting with Vito Arcaro when he had the Grid Iron, and talking about all the deer stories the guys made up. Seems like the deer herd shrunk or not enough hunters to keep them moving. Merry Christmas from Tall Timers Club and a Healthy New Year for everyone in the Ice Box of Pennsylvania.”

Ted, Mike, TJ and Kevin were all lucky hunters during the season.

Good luck to Jim and Barbara Craig who have sold their home on Church Street. They will go back to their home in Media, but hope to visit now and then. They will be missed by all their neighbors and friends.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, took a short trip to Marlton, NJ, to visit TJ and Allison Lowden, at their home there.

Cory McDonald, Wakefield, RI, is spending the Christmas holiday here and about with family and friends.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book: December 20, 1981 – Cold and 14 degrees. Our weather today was a low of 22 degrees and I don’t think it went up above 34 degrees all day. Ours is a tad better than what they had back in 1981.

Well, this is the last Sully for the year. Next one will be January 6, 2016. The year seemed to go by pretty fast. Can’t really complain about the nice weather we’ve been having. Cold mornings, but warm during the day. I know the hunters would rather snow to track the deer and then drag it out of the woods when its shot, but I’ll take this weather for sure.

Cory McDonald, Wakefield, RI, spent the Thanksgiving holiday here visiting family and friends.

NO Civic meeting in the month of December due to the Christmas holiday.

Sympathy from the community on the passing of Jim McGinty on the 29th of November. A mass of Christian burial will be held on December 10th at St. Francis Church, Mildred, with Rev. Rojas presiding. A pleasant man to know and he will be missed,

The first marking period Honor Roll has come out. Those on the Distinguished Honor Roll include Kyler and Paige Burke; Aaron and Trevor Kinsey; and Kassidy Brown. On Honor Roll was Joey Malkemes and Jacob Williams. Congratulations, great job and keep up the good work.

Santa Claus made a visit to Lopez on Saturday when he stopped by Russian Hall to visit with the many kids and others who gathered there. Thanks to Barbara Andrewlavage who again chaired this event. Big Thank You to her for donating all the craft items used and the candy given. It is much appreciated. The Civic Association has Santa give out the big bag of toys. All had a great time. Someone mentioned there must have been fifty people in attendance.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Dylan Amon, 13th; Noah Brown, 14th; Carter Vermiere, 17th; and V Rev Mother Christophora and Christian Santarelli, both on the 19th. Hope you all have a great day.

On December 16th, Red Rock Job Corps will be having their wrapping party at the Santa Workshop there. The kids get to pick a gift for someone at home, it is wrapped for them and everyone has a good time. If you’re interested in helping, contact Jackie Johnson at

HINT: “Brighten up your fireplace brickwork by using one cup of white vinegar and one gallon of warm water. Scrub the area and your bricks will look shiny and nice.” (Good for those decorating for the Christmas holiday.)
