June 1, 2016

What a beautiful weekend, despite a little rain.  We did have a short down pour on Saturday.  For the most part, the weather held out for the parties and the parades.

Lopez Memorial Day parade was the best ever.  Thank you, thank you, to the Mildred Fir Co. for traffic control.  It was so nice to be able to hear what was going on without vehicles and motorcycles whooshing through town making a lot of noise.  Thank you to Rep. Tina Pickett, our speaker, who did another fine job with her speech.  Thanks to everyone who took part in the parade and to the many, many spectators that made this a special event.  See you next year.

Congratulations to Jaron Williams for making the Dean’s list at Penn College of Technology in Williamsport; Bachelor of Science, Manufacturing Engineering Technology.

Congratulations to Jacob Williams who was inducted into National Honor Society last week at SC High School.

Thanks so much to Barbara Andrewlavage for again making and donating the wreath that was placed at the Monument during our Memorial Day service and for donating the beautiful flowers and flags that were placed at the Monument and the Lopez sign.  They look so nice and it is appreciated by all.

Tony and Patti Sneidar, along with Forest, Philadelphia, enjoyed some time over the Holiday at their home on Church Street.

Marty and Dee Whatley, Philadelphia, spent the Holiday at their home on Route 487, Lesterville.

TJ and Alison Lowden, along with Wesson, Marlton, NJ, spent a few days over Memorial Day at their home on Church Street.  Their friend, Kevin Dougherty, Marlton, NJ, was also here with them.

Gerry and Paula Weslowski, Allentown, had an enjoyable Holiday weekend with their daughter, Nina Weslowski, and Brian McGuire, Main Street.

A little over 100 friends, neighbors and family gathered at Lopez Campground on Sunday for B’s Annual Turkey Smoke, hosted by Brian McGuire.  There was an abundance and variety of good food, along with trash can turkeys, hamburgs and hot dogs to please the palate;  and enough refreshments to whet your whistle.  There were volley ball games, the “mud pit”, swimming in the creek, and lots of visiting.  The evening ended with “BOOM BOOMS BY B” that was an AWESOME display of color and sound , with a few rain sprinkles that didn’t dampen anyone’s fun.  The weather was perfect all day.  Everyone looks forward to another great time next year.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, were up Sunday to visit Bob and JoAnn McGuire and had a nice time at Brian McGuire’s picnic.

There were some of the Borick “offspring” down at Tent City over the Holiday weekend.  Had a great time while they were here.

Safe travels to Ted Lowden and three friends who are on a six week motorcycle trip to Alaska.  He’s keeps in touch through Face Book, so it’s nice to see where they’ve been and where they are.  Enjoy!!

Happy Anniversary to Stanley and Kathleen Stasiak as they celebrate 41 years on the 6th.  Congrats.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  May 30, 1982 – cloudy, warm and 56 degrees.   I think we had that beat by quite a lot; it was hot, breezy and probably way above 56 degrees.  I’ll take it.

HINT:  “To ease sunburn, gently rub with a cotton ball or soft cloth soaked with white or cider vinegar.  Try to apply this before the sunburn begins to sting.  You can also use this to help treat insect bites or rashes from poison ivy or oak.”   (This is the season, so will have to try this.)

Next Civic meeting will be Tuesday, June 21st, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Should be warm enough soon to have the meetings at the Pavilion.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy this beautiful weather; the week is to be really nice.

Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or email me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Notice this is a new e-mail address.  Thanks for all the hints and tips; they seem to be enjoyed by all and a lot have been tried.

Rain, rain, rain.  What can I say.  Is this because we had barely any snow this winter?  It’s almost the end of May and I think I could count warm days on one hand.  Such a rainy weekend, I didn’t see many around.  Probably will be many more over the Memorial Day holiday, so I’ll have something to report.

Hope you all get out to our Memorial Day parade on Monday, 10 a.m. in the Park.  Rep. Tina Pickett will be our guest speaker and Mrs. Rhonda Stasiak will place the wreath at the monument.  Enjoy all the parades in Sullivan County over the Holiday to honor those who have served and are now serving to keep us free.  Let’s hope for warm, sunny weather.

Miss Sophia, a friend of the Orthodox Monastery, Ellwood City, will be spending the summer at St. Nicholas House on Church St.  She is from a small town in Texas, so should fit right in.  If you see her out and about, welcome her to our community.  She and Mother Galina came from the Monastery on Monday and Mother Christophora joined them on Wednesday.  Mother G. and Mother C. will leave on Thursday to attend some events in NY and NJ.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, spent a few days at her home on Church Street.  The weather wasn’t the best, but she still enjoyed her time here.

HINT:  “Walnut: Buff Dings out of Wood Furniture. Get rid of unsightly scratches and dings on wood furniture by rubbing a walnut on the areas. The blemishes will vanish quickly and your furniture and pocket book will be saved.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-9238.

Hope you all have a great Memorial Day Holiday.  Be safe and enjoy.  Won’t be much longer and school will be out.  I’m sure the kids are looking forward to that.

If you have time to spare over the weekend, take a ride up to the Bullis home on Dutch Mountain.  They are having a yard sale on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Might find something of interest.  I’m sure there will be signs posted to get you there.

Guess that’s about it for now.  Enjoy the rainy, but warm, week.  Still kind of wet and cold to do much planting.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com   I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

WOW!!!   What a weekend.  Saturday was pouring down rain.  Sunday was bitter cold, brutal wind and we had snow showers on and off all day.  Sunday night into Monday morning was to be very cold with frost predicted….again, so anyone who had flowers and plants out had to cover them or take them inside.  Thought we might have to get out the shovel again.  Will summer ever get here and stay???   This weather makes it rough to try and plant a garden or get flowers in.  Been trying to get some landscaping done at Cold Spring, but Mother Nature just isn’t cooperating.  In time, everyone will get their work done.

There will be a dumpster at the Township Building on Saturday, the 21st, from 8 a.m. to Noon.  See ad in this week’s paper to get details.

Bob McGuire is looking for a Turnpike School 1960 Year Book for a class picture.  If you might have one he could borrow to copy the picture, please contact him at the info below.

HINT:  “Did you know meat tenderizer can be used for bee stings?  Make a paste with water and  rub it into the sting hole and get relief.  This is because the tenderizer contains papain, an enzyme from the papaya plant that breaks down proteins in insect poisons.  By inactivating some of the venom, it dissolves some of the pain.”

Memorial Day parade in Lopez, 10 a.m., Monday, the 30th.  Kids….remember to meet at the Post Office at 9:30 a.m. if you’d like to march in the parade.  Speaker this year will be Rep. Tina Pickett.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Don’t know if there were any local turkey hunters.  Haven’t heard of any so far.

Don’t have a whole lot of news this week.  Guess most are just staying home until the weather warms up and they can enjoy coming.

Happy Birthday wishes to Tanya Stasiak, 25th; Michele Craig, 26th; Nick DeSanto, 29th, and Bruno Day, 31st.  Hope you all have a good day.

Happy Anniversary  to Tony and Patti Sneidar, 26th; Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning, 28th; and Jack and Joyce Walsh, 29th.  Have a super day.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Might have to put the heavy jacket back on, but get out anyway.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

May 11, 2016

A rainy, cool weekend.  Hope you all had a nice Mother’s Day.   Wish it would warm up and stay.  It rained quite a lot, but the ground is still pretty dry.  The bear is still around; was on Main Street, still taking garbage from cans and strewing it around the yard.

Reminder to Lopez kids to remember to meet at the Post Office around 9:30 a.m. on Memorial Day to march in the parade.  Any Lopez kids that weren’t contacted, feel free to join in.   Memorial Day parade will be on Monday, the 30th. 10 a.m. in the Park.

Congratulations to Kassidy Brown for achieving Honor Roll and to Kyler and Paige Burke, Layton Shea, and Aaron Kinsey for Distinguished Honor Roll.   Keep up the good work.

Joe Fanning, Landenberg, and a couple of friends, spent the weekend at his home on Church Street.  They went to a horseshoe tournament in Benton on Saturday.

Rev Mother Christophora and Mother Paula, Orthodox Monastery, Ellwood City, enjoyed a few days relaxation at St. Nicholas House on Church Street.

Next Civic meeting will be Tuesday, the 17th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

If anyone is interested, we’re still taking donations for up-keep and maintenance of Cold Spring.  Send to Lopez Civic Assoc., P.O. Box 100, Lopez, PA 18628 and mark the enveloped “Cold Spring”.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, spent Mother’s Day with Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire and had a fun time while they were here.

I know it’s early, but mark your calendar for the annual Lopez flea market.  This year it will be held on Saturday, August 20th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Check your calendar, attic, or garage to see if there are things you may no longer want or need.  For more information, call me at the number below.

Happy Birthday wishes to Cory McDonald, 15th; Marian Hubiak, 19th; and Susan Aharonian, 24th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Tim and Bobbi Jo Brown as they celebrate on the 21st.  Have a good day.

HINT:  “Have a blemish you need to get rid of overnight?    Put a dab of honey on the blemish and cover it up with a Band-Aid.  The honey’s natural antibacterial properties will clean out the bacteria by morning.”

The humming birds are back.  They usually come around Mother’s Day and did again this year.  Nice to see the busy little birds again.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, even though I heard it’s to be pretty rainy again.  It is to be warmer for most of the week, so get out and about when you can.

Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

May 4, 2016

Gee, another dull, windy, rainy, cold weekend.  When will the sun shine and stay warm.  We’re ready for warm, not more cold.

The Kale family had some visitors last week.  A mother bear and three cubs stopped by to check out the bird feeders on the front porch and to look in the window.  Then, they went to the back porch and Ruth happened to look out and saw a cub looking in at her.  She called the guys to come look and her voice never bothered the bear.   They were checking things out and went on their way after a while.  The Kale’s said they took the bird feeders in as the birds are good on their own now.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire spent Friday into Saturday with Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek.  They took Tyler with them to help set up at the 13th Annual NE PA Mineralogical show held in Pittston.  Tyler also went back on Saturday to help at the show where UVBOB did the fluorescent mineral presentations on Saturday and Sunday.  Tyler had a good time and was a big help.  On Saturday evening Bob and JoAnn stayed with his sister, Lola and Mike Mattie in Forty Fort and went to the show from there.  Was a good show and a good weekend.   Was very cold, rainy and windy so there was a good attendance since folks couldn’t work outside.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Steam clean your microwave.  Fill a bowl with one cup water and 1/4 cup vinegar.  Set the bowl in the microwave and cook on high for five minutes.  Once the bowl cools down, use the solution to wipe off the walls of the microwave.”

Since I was away for the weekend, I don’t know who was here or what happened while I was gone.  I know  spring gobbler started on Saturday, so hope you all were lucky hunters, those of you who hunt.

Happy Birthday wishes to Diane Fanning, 9th; Elizabeth Spinosa, 10th; Xander Kapler and Kessler Gilbert, 12th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday.  Hope all of you mothers have a super day.  It’s a nice time to celebrate whatever type of mother you have in your life; it’s a special day.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; it has to get better.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

April 27, 2016

Kind of a cool weekend again.  Sun felt good, but the wind was not so good.  Had some frost during the week and Sunday morning was 23 degrees but did warm up.  Will be a cool week, I guess, with rain showers and maybe a thunder storm.  Sure wish it would warm up and stay warm.  Had enough of cold, frost and windy weather.  We do need the rain, especially those areas that are troubled with brush fires.   Please don’t burn; it’s just too windy.  Why someone wanted to start those fires and burn homes and so many acres is beyond me.   Sure are some troubled people out there.

Happy Easter to those of the Orthodox faith.  Their Easter is Sunday and hope it’s a Blessed time for all of you to enjoy.

Hope you all got out to vote.

The bear are still around.  We moved our bird feeder just in time.  He/she must have smelled a couple of seeds and tried to climb to get them, but the seeds were gone.  I think we have ours high enough now that it won’t be bothered.

Don’t know how the trout fishermen are doing, but hopefully they will catch enough for a nice meal.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.  They make a nice meal for Orthodox Easter.

HINT:  “Here’s a recipe for weed be-gone:  Mix 1 GAL vinegar, 2 cups Epsom salts and 1/4 cup original Dawn Dish Detergent.  Put in a spray bottle and spray weeds in the morning, after the dew has evaporated.  Go back after dinner and weeds are gone.”  (With planting season coming, this will be a good one to try.)

Happy Birthday to Paige and Kyler Burke, May 1st; JoAnn Day, 2nd; Ryan Dempsey and Ted Lowden, both on the 7th.  Hope you all have a very nice day.

Keep an eye on the Sully for events coming up that you may be interested in.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, May 17, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Mark your calendar now.

April 20, 2016

What a perfect weekend!   You can tell when it’s a nice day when you hear all the motorcycles and quads around.  You also hear the garden tillers working.  Was a great time to be out and about.  With more of the nice weather, there will be more folks coming to open up their summer homes and spend time here in Lopez and Sullivan County.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Hope all the trout fishermen had luck on Saturday, the first day of the season.  Saw quite a few pictures on TV, but don’t know if any locals had luck or not.

Don’t have a lot of news for this week.  I know there will be activities going on in the County, so keep a watch on the Sully to see what, where and when, if you’d like to attend these things.

Happy Birthday wishes to Tom Beck and Roseanne Lukachik, both on the 18th; Holly Ann Sperry, 20th; Jon-Paul Matychak, 23rd; Katherine Kapler, 25th; Mickey (Fedorchak) Mowery, 26th; David Spinosa, 28th; and Ken Kline and Abby Matychak, both on the 30th.  Hope you all have an enjoyable day.

Alice Fedorchak and daughter, Mickey Mowery, Montoursville, visit  Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, Dushore, on Monday.  They all enjoyed lunch at Pam’s and had a nice visit.

HINT:  “Poison ivy spreads through the spread of the oil within the blisters.  Washing the affected area with Dawn dish liquid, especially on children who keep scratching the blisters open, helps dry up the fluid and keep it from spreading.”   (Will be the season soon for that, so give it a try.)

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, are spending some time at their home on Church Street.  Doing some clean-up things from the winter season.  The weather should be really good for them to get chores done.

Guess that’s about all the news for now.  Enjoy your week; should be fabulous.   Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

April 13, 2016

Another crazy weekend with the snow that passed through on Saturday and the weather wasn’t all that warm either.    Didn’t get a whole lot here, but enough for sledding on the hill across the street from us.  We were spared; from what I heard many other places got, we were lucky.  Didn’t last long; by Sunday, it was almost gone.  But, it is Lopez and you never know what Mother Nature is going to throw our way.  Every time someone says “it’s the last storm”, we seem to get another one.  The robins sure didn’t like the snow; had a hard time trying to find a good morsel to eat.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent a few days visiting her daughter, Irene Pequignot, in Linden.

St. Vladimir’s church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.  These make a very good meal when you don’t have time or don’t know what to have for dinner.

Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 19th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

Don’t forget, Tuesday, the 26th, is Primary Election Day, so get out and vote.

Wasn’t out much at all during the week, so don’t know what’s going on or who’s out and about.  I’ll check it out this week and see if there’s something to add to next week’s news.

Happy Birthday wishes to Jaron Williams, 11th; John Risser, 12th; Joyce Walsh, 13th, Kristin (Anderson) Iwancio, 15th; Pat Burd and Carole (Fedorchak) Underwood, both on the 17th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Happy Anniversary to Sheldon and Penny Speary as they celebrate on the 13th; and Michael and Georgia (Mattie) Martin celebrate on the 15th.  Have a nice day and many more anniversaries.

HINT:  “To repel mosquitoes during the season, tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors.”   (Have to try that this year and see if it really works.  Would be good if it does as mosquitoes can be a pain.)

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; it has to warm up soon.  I know folks wants to start working in the garden and flower beds.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

March 30, 2016

Well, did the Easter bunny hop on down to your house on Sunday?  Hope you all had an enjoyable day with family and friends and didn’t eat too many jelly beans.  The weather wasn’t too bad; sun peeked out off and on and it was a tad breezy, but at least no snow or rain.  The week is to be good, so I think the kids will enjoy their Spring break this week.

TJ Lowden, Marlton, NJ, spent the Easter weekend at his home on Church Street.  Ted and Mary Lowden are back at their home on Maple Terrace.

Sullivan County Library, Dushore, received many nice comments on the mineral exhibit in the window, done by Bob McGuire.   Glad it was appreciated by those who got to see the display.

Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, April 19th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Mark your calendar now and hope to see you there.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order yours, please call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan.  Put a sheet of Bounce in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight; then sponge clean.  The anti-static agent weakens the bond between the food and the pan.”   (This is a new one on me and wonder if it does work and if the pan will smell like Bounce when cleaned.)

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  March 27, 1974 – Clear and 16 degrees.   Same day, 2016 – Breezy, on and off sun and didn’t check the temperature, but was more than 16 degrees.

Spending Easter Sunday with Mrs. Irene Huray included Irene Pequignot; Shawn Pequignot family; Kevin Pequignot family;  and Jennifer Pequignot family.  Nice for all of them to get together and enjoy the day.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; I hear it’s to be pretty warm.  Folks are starting to work in the flower beds and gardens and that’s nice to see.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com  I’ll get it in for you.   If you have any hints you’d like to share, send them along and I’ll use them from time to time.   Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

March 23, 2016

Getting some really nice weather.  I guess the storm they had predicted has stayed out along the coast and the week’s weather is to be warm and sunny.  The geese are still flying North and I’ve seen many robins now, so hope that’s a good sign.  Kids will be excited with only four days of school this week and then it’s Easter vacation.  Just hope the weather is in their favor and not cold, windy and snowy.   Never know if we’re done with snow or not; a storm can pop up any time.

Joe and Diane Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home on Church Street and got some Spring yard work done.

Cory McDonald, Wakefield, RI, is spending the Easter holiday with family and friends.   Get well to Kaeleigh McDonald who was feeling “under the weather”.   Hope she’s feeling much better.

The Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show, held over the weekend was another success with lots of interesting and educational things taking place, including UVBOB and his fluorescent mineral presentations.   Get well to him; he caught a really bad cold so came home after closing on Sunday, went straight to bed; hopefully the cold and aches won’t last too long.  If you were able to attend the show, I hope you had an enjoyable time.

HINT:  “Instead of using a spray and a streaky cloth, use only newspaper to clean off your mirrors and windows for a streak-free finish.”  (I just heard that someone does this and works really well.)

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order yours, please call 570-928-1099.

Now, with the better weather on the way, there will be many more things going on around the County.  Watch the Sully for anything you might see that would interest you.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  March 21, 1974 – cool, rain and 32 degrees.   As I’m sitting here, typing my news very early on the same day, 2016, it’s frosty, cool and 23 degrees.  I’m sure the temperature will go up during the day.

Good Friday is coming up this week and then Easter on Sunday.  Hope the Easter bunny gets to visit you and will leave some nice treats.  Have a Blessed Easter with family and friends.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; I heard it’s to be very warm and nice.  Soon it will be time to start digging the garden and flower beds.   Have news give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

March 16, 2016

Another nice weekend.   On Thursday we saw BIG flocks of geese going over.  The weather was warm, sunny, breezy and temperatures in the 60’s, which felt really good.  Did have rain showers on Thursday.   I just hope we’re done with the snow and cold.  Did you all remember to turn your clocks ahead on Sunday?  I guess I had a blonde moment….not a senior moment…..I turned mine back and realized later I moved the hands the wrong way.   I finally did see three robins early in the week, so I guess they are around and maybe that’s another good sign of Spring.
I must apologize to Layton Shea.  I missed him for both marking periods and he made Distinguished Honors both times.  Sorry, Layton, and I’ll try to remember next time.  Gotta remember, you’re a Lopezian now.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, spent a nice Saturday visiting her mother, Mrs. Irene Huray, Church Street.

Bob and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski on Friday.  Had a nice time and got to fly Tyler’s balsa airplane.  Just enough breeze to have it go really good.  They all helped Bob, Sr., celebrate his birthday.

HEADS UP!!!  There WILL be a Civic meeting on Tuesday, April 19th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.  Mark your calendar now and hope to see you there.   Lots of up-coming things to discuss.

Congratulations to Gaige Burke for winning the Easter coloring contest at Ally Bell’s on Sunday.

The 47th Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral show is coming up this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th.  This is held at the Athens Township Fire Hall, Sayre.  From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  There will be educational exhibits by club members; Indian artifacts;  a  special exhibit and silent auction by Marc Wilson from Carnegie Museum; an exhibit by Paleontological Research Institute and fossil ID by Bill Klose from the Institute; cabochon making; geode cutting; mini-mine for the kids; and UVBOB will have fluorescent mineral programs.  Food will also be available.  Hope you can come see what it’s all about.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Marlton, NJ, spent a few days at their home on Maple Terrace.  They also brought along Willie, their new addition to the family.

HINT:  “Adding coconut oil to your dog’s food will help to get rid of ticks and fleas.”  (Don’t know how, but I was told it does work.)

Happy Birthday wishes to Aaron Kinsey, 21st; Irene Risser, 28th; Heather McDonald and Trevor Kinsey, both on the 30th.  Hope you all have a good day.

B’s gang sends Happy Birthday greetings to Lori Higley as she celebrates on the 19th.  Have a good one.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  March 13, 1974 – Very cold, clear, and 10 degrees.   Wow!!   I liked ours a lot better.  We had clouds and breeze and in the 50’s.   I remember one March 13th when we had a blizzard, but was glad not this time.

I know there must be things going on around the County, so check the Sully to find out more.   Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; heard a few showers, but that won’t matter if you want to get out and about.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Another nice weekend and more coming for the week.  Saturday was 7 degrees early, then warmed up; Sunday was 11 degrees early and only warmed up to 40 during the day and the wind had a little “bite” to it; not as warm as last weekend, but getting there.  Can you believe it’s supposed to hit 60+ by Wednesday.  I’ll take it.  We’ve seen flocks of geese flying North, so that’s a good sign, right?  Mike McDonald family has seen robins twice so that’s another good sign, right?  Let’s hope so.

FLASH:  Don’t forget that Sunday is SPRING ahead for your clocks.  Make sure you remember to do that so you won’t be late wherever you might have to go.

Tony and Patti Sneidar, Philly, spent a few days at their home on Church Street and enjoyed the nice weather.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

The  47th annual Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club show is coming up.  Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 19th and Sunday, March 20th.  The show is held at the Athens Volunteer Fire Company in Sayre.   Times are Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  There will be educational exhibits, dealers with a variety of things they sell, Carnegie Museum will have a spectacular display, PRI will have fossil identification, UVBOB will have fluorescent mineral programs, there will be a mini-mine for the kids, and there will be food available.    A good, educational and fun show to attend.  Hope to see you there.   If you need more information, call Bob at 570-928-9238.

Happy Birthday wishes to Bob McGuire, 13th; Elizabeth Weisbrod, 15th; Gianna Mae DiRocco, 16th; Don Risser and Sherilyn Dendler, both on the 17th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

B’s gang sends Happy, Happy Birthday wishes to Steph Putnam as she celebrates on the 17th.  And, her sister, Kristin, celebrates on the 18th.  Have a great day, both of you.

Happy Anniversary to Joe and Tina Tabor as they celebrate on the 15th.  Congratulations and have a nice day.

Gee, before long we will be celebrating the Easter holiday.  Time seems to keep rolling along; hardly seems like the month of March will be over so soon.

HINT:  “Vinegar is a great way to keep frost from forming on your car windows.  Spray the outside of your windows with a mixture of three parts white vinegar to 1 part water.”  (We still have some frosty days, so will have to try this and see if it does work.)

I know there are probably some other things going on around the County, so check the Sully to see what you might be interested in.  Was too bad that the winter didn’t allow for the Eagles Mere toboggan slide this year.  That is a major fund raiser for them, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  March 6, 1974 – cool and 20 degrees.  Not bad; ours was a little better.

Guess that’s the news.  Enjoy your week; seems like it’s going to be a real hot doozy.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get your item in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

March 2, 2016

Another nice weekend.  Saturday and Sunday were both in the 50+ degree range.  Is winter finally over??  I hope so.  On Wednesday, of course we had to have another storm.  It was worse than the week before.  I never heard such thunder and the pounding rain, along with the high winds and lightning.  There was a tornado that went through part of Wyalusing and I thought sure it came through here.   We’ve been pretty lucky so far this year.  Maybe that groundhog is right this time and we’ll get an early Spring.   Never know what Mother Nature has in store for us, but we can hope.  One weatherman on TV said “winter is not over yet”, but I hope he’s wrong.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, visited Bob and JoAnn McGuire, Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski on Friday evening.  Had a nice birthday celebration for Jr. with Chef “B” doing the grilling, providing snacks and even ice cream.  Another year down the tubes and hope he has many more good years ahead.

Sympathy from the community to the relatives and friends of Rose Decker who passed away on the 23rd.  A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, the 29th, at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with Rev. Richard Rojas officiating.  Burial was in SS Peter and Paul Byzantine Cemetery, Lopez.

Gee, we have to remember that Daylight Savings Time is fast approaching.  I just mention it now, but will mention it when it’s close and time to move our clocks ahead one hour.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

On Sunday, Bob and JoAnn McGuire were invited by Rebecca Nauta, Bear Den Leader of Cub Scout Pack 30, in Columbia Crossroads, to come and have Bob do a mineral presentation to the 29 Scouts and their relatives.  There were Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos in attendance.  This was a Pack meeting and the kids are given advancement awards they’ve earned.  They also do some special programs.  This was different types of skits and games.  They also had pizza and a birthday cake since February is the birthday of the Scout program.  The meeting was held at Bradley Hall in Columbia Cross Roads.  Was a fun, interesting and educational time for everyone.

HINT:  “If you have stuck on food on your pans or casserole dishes, use some baking soda and white vinegar; let the dirty pans soak for a while  and then wash; comes right off. You will see the soda fizz in the vinegar.  Can also be used to clean your stove top.”  (I met a new friend over the weekend and Gary tells me he has done this and it does work.  Thanks, Gary.)

Birthday wishes to send out to Keene Vinetelli, March 5th; Bethany Dendler, 6th; Janelle Day, 9th; Ruby Malkemes and Tally (McGee) Tierney, both on the 10th; Monte Gulich and Julien Bonner, both on the 11th.  Hope you all have a super day celebrating.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  February 28, 1974 – Sunny, Mild and 26 degrees.   We had a much warmer day, with lots of sunshine, breeze and 53 degrees in the early afternoon.

The Kiwanas Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show  on Monday, March 7th.  They have a few seats left, so if you’re interesting in going and want more information, please call 570-924-4224 or 570-567-4455.  If you’ve never been, I’ve heard it is really a wonderful thing to attend and so much to see.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; I hear it’s to be super.  Get out, go for a walk, go visit someone, or just sit on the porch and take in the fresh air.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.  Keep the hints coming and they’ll be used some time or other.  I know people look forward to them.

February 24, 2016

What a great weekend!  The weather was beautiful both Saturday and Sunday.  Was up to 56 degrees on Saturday and 50 degrees on Sunday, with lots of sunshine and warm breezes.  I could take more of this for sure.  Made it nice for folks to be out and about, taking walks, doing odd things in the yard and even doing some quad riding.  We’ll see what the week brings.  I did hear rain, sleet and snow again for Tuesday into Wednesday, with heavy rain again on Thursday.  Hope it’s wrong.

Joe and Diane (Charnik), along with Molly, Landenberg, and her cousin, Charlotte Grant, Bear, DE, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  Had a nice time with the weather being so cooperative.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire spent last Tuesday and Wednesday with Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, while his Dad, Jr., went on a work related trip to Philadelphia.  Had a nice time with him.   He was even our chef for dinner one night and did a good job.

Second marking period, Distinguished Honor Roll, includes Kyler Burke, Madison Burke, and Aaron Kinsey.   Honor Roll was Paige Burke, Jaeden Patson, Trevor Kinsey and Kassidy Brown.   Congratulations to all for a job well done.

B’s gang says congratulations to Matt Hetsko,  and Miguel “Slick” Rodriguez  for Honor Roll status also.  Uncle “B” says “good job” to Tyler McGuire for making High Honors at his school, Lake Lehman Junior-Senior High School.

Jordan Schnabel, Allentown, enjoyed a nice weekend with Nina Weslowski and Brian McGuire.  Weather was great for a good time outdoors.   All had fun.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes to Jacob Williams, 23rd; Bob McGuire, Jr., 26th; and John Borick, 29th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “For rural mail carriers, put a sheet of Bounce in your uniform pocket to keep yellow jackets away.  Also can be used when playing sports and working outside.  The insects just veer away from you.”

Check the Sully for up-coming events around the County and see if there is something you might like to attend or take part in.   The month of February is almost over; hopefully March will also fly by and Spring will be sprung and nice weather to stay.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  February 21, 1978 – Partly sunny, cold and FOUR degrees.  I sure liked our day much better.  Never know what Mother Nature has in store for us, from day to day or week to week.  Just have to go with what she sends us.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week.  Get outside and get some exercise while you can.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

February 17, 2016

Good Lord!!!!   The weekend was the worst one so far.  Had terrible winds, cold, some snow, more wind, more cold.   Was only four degrees on Saturday and was MINUS 10 degrees on Sunday.  Last I heard, the first three days of the week are not to be too good.  Hope that’s wrong.  We need a warm up.  It sure was cold for the Winterfest activities over the weekend, but I imagine there were many, many brave soles who attended, no matter the temperature.  Well, the Groundhog said early Spring, so I hope he’s right.  I certainly won’t mind.  Hope you all had a really nice Valentine’s Day, despite the cold.

TJ and Allison Lowden, Marlton, NJ, along with their new puppy, Wesson, spent the Holiday weekend at their home on Church Street.  Allison’s brother, Jeff Corbin and his girlfriend, Megan Thomas, Marlton, NJ, also were here with them.  This was Wesson’s first trip to Lopez.  He’ll get used to the cold pretty fast if he comes here often.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, spent a few days in NJ and came back with a new addition to the family.  They are now the proud owners of “Willy”, and he’s a cutie.

Mark your calendar.  The Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club’s 47th annual mineral and gem show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 19th and 20th.   This is held at the Athens Township Fire Hall in Sayre and has something for everyone.  There are educational displays, many different dealers, geode cutting, cabochon making, fluorescent programs by UVBOB, and food.  Hope to see you there.

HINT:  “When letting your pots and pans soak, throw in one or two Alka Seltzer tablets and the caked on residue from cooking will come off easily when you wash the pot or pan.”

HINT:  “Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into eight ounces of water to soothe your stomach and relieve diarrhea.  The taste may not be the greatest, but the antibacterial properties of the vinegar will end the unpleasantness of the bowel problems.”   (With flu bugs going around, this might be a good one to try when the “event” occurs.)

Happy Birthday wishes to Khloie Bahr who will be 4 years old on the 19th; Clair Johnson II, 20th; and Armond Spinosa, 22nd.  Hope you all have a fine day.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  February 14, 1979 – windy, cold and MINUS 14 degrees.   It’s about the same as ours was; all I know is that is was COLD!!!

Well, guess that’s it from the Ice Box of PA.  Enjoy your week; might have to spend time indoors if it isn’t too good.  Curl up with a good book and a glass of wine.  I guess we’ll just have to live with what Mother Nature sends our way.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

February 10, 2016

Can’t complain about the nice weather we’ve been having.  Last Monday was 52 degrees, sunny and warm.  I hung the laundry out on the line and it dried.  That was awesome.  Hadn’t done that for months.   I hear we may be getting a “little” snow, but most of the storms are going to stay out along the coast.  New York, New Jersey, DC and Maryland can have it all.   We’ve been pretty lucky so far this year.

Due to the warm weather, there will be no toboggan slide in Eagles Mere this year.  That’s the sad part about the weather since this is a major fund raiser for the Eagles Mere Fire Company and they depend on the cold weather to make the slide.

Sympathy from the community to the family and friends of Steve Gulich, Sr., who passed away on January 31st.  Funeral was held on February 4th at St. Vladimir’s Church, with burial in the parish cemetery.  Rev. Dennis Hendershot presided.  Steve was a good member of the community and visited with anyone he’d see while walking to town every day to pick up his mail.  He will be missed by all who got to know him.

Visiting Mrs. Irene Huray on Saturday was her daughter, Irene Pequignot and her grandson, Kevin Pequignot.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order yours, call 570-928-1099.

Don’t forget……..Winterfest is coming up on the weekend.  Lots of things planned for the weekend, so take a ride to Camp Brule and enjoy the fun.   Take part in the Polar Bear plunge; check out the ice carving, the live auction, the human dog sled races, and many more things that will be going on.  I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Sunday is Valentine’s Day so enjoy the day with loved ones.   Do something special for someone, just because.

Happy Birthday wishes to Haley Latch, 15th;  and Allison Lowden and Tim Brown, 17th.
Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Use toothpaste to buff a CD/DVD.  Apply toothpaste to a cotton ball and wipe the disc.   Wash with water and you’ve got a brand new disc.”
There’s still time to get your Cold Spring donation in.  If you’d like to give to that project, mark your envelope “Cold Spring” and send to Lopez Civic Association, P.O. Box 100, Lopez, PA  18628.  All monies greatly appreciated.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  February 7, 1978 – Cloudy, cold, flurries and 10 degrees.  On that date, now, we had sun, little wind and 10 degrees early, but did warm up to 40 degrees later in the day.   I think one of these days we’ll get snow and cold and it will be here a while.  But…………maybe not.  Maybe we’ll get an early Spring.  There are conflicting reports that the groundhog saw his shadow, he didn’t see his shadow, so I’ll just wait and see what happens.

I’ve had people tell me they like the weather reports I give in my column.  They know how to dress and what to bring to the area if they’re coming for a weekend or a few days, so they enjoy that.

Guess that’s it for this time.  Enjoy your week, whatever you may do.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

February 3, 2016

I just can’t believe the nice weather we’ve been having.  The weekend was great.  Sunday was warmer than Saturday, with 28 degrees early in the morning and warming up to 54 degrees in the afternoon, with lots of sunshine and not much wind.   At 11 p.m. it was still above 40 degrees.  I did hear there “may” be a coastal storm coming on the 10th of February.  That’s close to Valentine’s Day when some folks say there is usually a storm at that time.  We’ll have to wait and see, but maybe it will miss us again.   Really can’t complain of the winter we’ve had so far.   Many people are noticing that some of their trees and bushes are budding.  Only hope they don’t get frozen and not bloom for the summer time to enjoy.

Irene Pequignot, Linden, visited her mother, Mrs. Irene Huray, on Sunday.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 928-1099.

Had a nice visit with Chris Cokos in Dushore one day last week.  He’s alive and well and has his wits about him and still has his great sense of humor.  Was nice to see him out and about.  Said to let everyone know he’s doing well.

No snow to go sledding, skiing, or snowmobiling, so I see lots riders out and about on their quads, enjoying the nice weather.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Alex Aharonian, 11th; Lisa Kellogg Williams, 13th; and Tommy Van Dyke and Krystal Vermiere, both on the 14th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  January 31, 1983 – cloudy and 32 degrees.  Not too bad, but I liked our day much better.

HINT:  “Bananas are the magical fruit because they heal many common problems on the skin.  By rubbing the peel on your skin, you can heal bruises and cuts, eliminate rashes, itching and warts.  If you have a common skin problem, it can be cured by this fruit.”  (See, bananas aren’t just for breakfast anymore.)

Well, I guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week.  Should be really nice to get out and take advantage of the good weather.  Rain may be here for Wednesday and then a cold front might be coming through.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.
