Lopez, PA Posted on January 19, 2017 by Bob McGuireJanuary 19, 2017

Had some on and off nice weather/cold weather/snow showers/sunshine; no we need some nice, warm weather.  Temperature early Sunday morning was only 10 degrees, but did warm up during the day and the sun sure helped.  On a walk on Saturday, just up the road from our house, we watched as 22 turkeys came up from the creek and headed for the woods.  That’s the most we’ve seen.  Usually 12 or so is a lot, but they were sure out that day.  I hear the weather is to warm up in the 40’s and low 50’s during the week and especially on Saturday.

If anyone is interested in helping to remove the Christmas decorations from the monument area, we can use your help.  We’re meeting at the Pavilion on Saturday, the 22nd, at Noon.  Shouldn’t take too long and the more help, the better.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-9011.

There is no Civic meeting for the month of January.

Check out the Lopez Civic Association items for sale on Face Book.  Go to Face Book and click on “Search”.  Type in Lopez Civic Association and you will see the new, retro t-shirts, koozies, and hoodies.  Hoodies are especially nice for the colder weather.

Don’t think there’s a lot going on around town; haven’t seen many out and about.  Hopefully, with the warmer weather, more folks will get out.

Happy Birthday wishes to Jim Rouse, 21st.  Special birthday wishes to Alice Fedorchak from all her Sullivan county friends as she celebrates on the 21st.  Irene Pequignot, 22nd; and Mike Stavisky (Florida), 24th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Alex and Ginny Stavisky, 22nd; Al and Jeannie Kapler, 23rd.   Congratulations and have a super day.

Got the following e-mail to share:

While visiting their hometown of Evesham Township, NJ, Ted and Mary Lowden attended the annual awards banquet of the Evesham Township Fire Department. Ted has been a member of that organization which consists of about 140 members, both career and volunteer for 41 years. They respond to thousands of fire and EMS incidents each year in a densely populated suburban area.

Along with about 100 members in attendance, local government elected leaders and representatives from surrounding emergency service communities attended the affair. This year the catered affair took place at Paris Catering located in Berlin, NJ. At the conclusion of the awards dancing and cocktails help the members celebrate for several hours.

The awards banquet is held each year in January and serves a platform for celebrating the dedication and successes of its members for the prior year. This year in addition to awards to members in pf both the fire and EMS divisions for their individual commitments to successful achievement of emergency service training and education, a half dozen awards for saving lives for CPR were issued, a meritorious service award for child delivery and medal of valor for life saving were bestowed upon members.

Additional awards are bestowed upon the station responder of each of the five divisions within the FD with one of those then selected as the overall Department Responder of the Year. All awards are based upon merit and in cases as necessary an independent investigation of the fact related to the nomination of the award.

HINT:  “Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress.  Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose.  Place the pin in the seam of the slacks and static is gone.”

I guess that’s about it for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you plan to do.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

A friend sent a simple eye test for everyone to take.

It is very easy and painless.  Just try to fine the cardinal.

Brrrrrrr!!!!   It was a cold weekend.  Saturday the temperature was down to 4 degrees and only went up to 15 degrees during the day.  Sunday was 2 degrees and didn’t warm up much at all.  It was very windy and cold both days.  Warm-up is coming, but don’t really know when.   Heard some nasty weather may be coming our way Tuesday into Wednesday; have to wait and see.  We’ve been very lucky.  Did you see the news on TV and what the South and West got hit with.  Sad day for all those folks.

Sympathy from the community to the Kline family on the loss of Elaine on December 24th.  Funeral will be at the convenience of the family.  She will be missed.

Hope all of you who celebrated Orthodox Christmas over the weekend had a nice day.  Sorry I failed to mention this in last week’s news, but did want to mention it now.

Haven’t seen many people out and about so don’t know who’s at their cabins or where they are.  Probably hunkered down at home keeping warm and reading a good book.   I do see a few hunters every now and then coming from the woods; they never seem to have anything, but they got some exercise.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Crystal Pequignot, 12th; and Adel Bradshaw, 20th.  Hope you have a nice day.

B’s gang sends birthday wishes to Tyler Higley as he celebrates on the 13th.  Hope it’s great.

Happy Anniversary to Ted and Linda Beaver, 12th; and to Ted and Mary Lowden, 17th.  Have a good day.

HINT:  “To make easy deviled eggs, put cooked yolks in a zip lock bag.  Seal, mash until they are all broken up.  Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing and mixing thoroughly.  Cut the tip of the bag, squeeze mixture into the egg white.  Just throw the bag away when done……easy clean up.”  (I know some who have tried this and it does work, but I’m “old school” and still like to do it with the pastry blender and mix the ingredients in myself.)

Guess that’s the winter news for now.  If you get out, be sure to bundle up to prevent frost bite and walk briskly to and from where you are going.  Better days ahead…….I hope.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I will get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Woke up to trees coated with ice.  Rather attractive in the sunlight.

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and will have a great 2017 year.  Weather was pretty nice over the Holidays for travel.  Did have some snow and there was lots of toboggan riding on the hill across from us.  Looked like a good time.   Hopefully the weather will stay nice for a while, but guess we have to get ready for whatever comes our way.

Congratulations to Jason and Dorothy Bahr on the birth of their baby, Lillie Ann, who was born on December 23rd.  She weighed 6.7 lbs.  She has a sister, Khloie, and all are doing well.

Don and Irene (Kravitz) Risser recently spent a few days in town.  They visited with Mary Kravetz and they all had lunch at Jolly Trolley in Dushore with Annabelle Kravetz of Mildred.  Irene just returned from a trip that included five days in Rome, Italy.  Then she boarded a cruise ship westward bound across the Atlantic to Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  Port stops along the way included Florence, Italy; ports in Tuscany and Provence, France; Barcelona, Spain, the island of Majorca and the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  Please call 570-928-1099 to order yours.

Cory McDonald was here from Rhode Island to spend time over the Holidays with family and friends.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire, Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski; Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire all spent Christmas Eve with Mike and Lola Mattie in Forty Fort.  Also there was Georgia, Michael and Mcguire Martin; Casey Martin and friend, Ricky.  All had a great time together.

Brian McGuire and Nina Weslowski spent Christmas Day with her parents in Allentown.  The day after Christmas Bob, Jr. and Tyler, Hunlock Creek, spent the day with us, Brian, Nina and Marty Slocum from New Albany also stopped by.  Good time for all.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent the Holidays with her daughter, Irene Pequignot, Linden.  Shawn Pequignot family; Kevin Pequignot and daughter; and Shawn Laird and family also spent time with them.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Jim Craig, January 1st; Georgette Matychak, 3rd; Jeannie Kapler, Edith Tamburro and Alex Stavisky, 4th; Pete Tomasak and Francis Baines, 5th; Matt Weisbrod, 6th; Linda Santarelli, 7th; Craig Germany and John McDonald, Jr., 9th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  To loosen stubborn glue dried on scissors or a counter, cover with WD 40.  It can dissolve the adhesive components of even strong glue to make it easier to remove.

Spending Monday through Wednesday with Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning was her cousin, Michael Charnik and his girlfriend, Karen.  They are from New Jersey.  They all had an enjoyable walk around Lopez on Tuesday; it was the best day of the week…sunny, with a little wind, but nice.  They took a ride to Dushore to see the only red light in the County (they were very impressed that it was the only red light), then an enjoyable ride through the country side.  They said they would love to come back again.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  January 1, 1974 it was cloudy with late rain and 24 degrees.  I just looked at the thermometer on this January 1st day and it’s sunny and 39 degrees.  That’s great.

There will be no Civic meeting in the month of January.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; from what I hear it’s to be pretty nice.  Get out and do some sledding, if you can, or just take a walk and get some fresh air.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Greetings,

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and now wishing you a healthy, prosperous and Happy New Year.

As you know, there is no Sully the week between Christmas and January one so I will just put in a few tidbits.  Santa stopped at the house, but his bag was very small when he got here.  He could have been a little more generous as I was pretty good this past year.  Well maybe next year.

We had a few snow falls and I am not a lover of snow, but these two gals had a lot of fun on sleds and tubes sliding down the hill even when they wiped out.

Hope you all had a good week.  We did get some plowable snow and kids were able to go sledding.  On Friday, the 16, Bob saw a good sized flock of geese go over.  They must have finally gotten the message that it was time to head South.  Saturday was a nice day with temperature in the 40’s.  Early Sunday morning it started to pour and did that for quite some time.  Temperature was still in the 40’s.  Then, early afternoon, that cold front came through, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped to 32 degrees in no time.  Can you imagine what all that rain would have amounted to if it were snow?  Don’t even want to think about it.

Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, have returned home after spending some time in the “flat lands” of Marlton, NJ.

Not much news this week.  I guess folks are busy doing that last minute shopping, getting the tree up and decorated and doing all that good Christmas baking.  Hopefully, we’ll get a “little” snow so Santa can make his trip to see all the good little boys and girls.

Happy Birthday wishes to Kaeleigh McDonald who will turn 9 on the 23rd; and Ginny Stavisky’s birthday is the 31st.  Hope you both have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Anthony and Bethany Sneidar as they celebrate one year on the 28th; also to Ted and Evelyn Hubiak whose special day is the 29th.  Have a wonderful day.

HINT:  “Use a wet cotton ball or Q-Tip to pick up small shards of glass you can’t easily see.”  “To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll to your vacuum hose.  It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.”

Check out www.lopezcivicassociation.com and see the new “hoodies” that are available.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, it’s to be pretty nice.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading.

This is the last issue of the Sully.  I’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year.   See you in 2017.

Weather is getting a little more wintry, but that’s to be expected.
Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and many friends of Barbara Andrewlavage who passed away on Tues., the 6th.  Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday at St. Francis Church, with Rev. Rojas officiating.  Burial was in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez.

The Lopez Civic Association held their annual Christmas party at St. Vladimir’s Hall on Saturday.  This was done in memory of Barbara Andrewlavage, who had passed away on Tuesday.  It was felt that Barbara would want the party to go on.  For many year, she chaired this event.  Through the Civic Association, she would purchase special gifts for kids in their age category.  She also, with her own money, purchased and donated all the crafts the kids enjoyed and the “goodie” bags.  Santa stopped by to visit with the kids and hand out the bags.  Carols were sung and all enjoyed refreshments.   All we can say to Barb is “Merry Christmas and Thank You for your years of dedication to make the kids happy.”  Thank you to all that helped.

No Civic meeting in December.

Happy Birthday wishes to Carter Vermiere, 17th; V Rev Mother Christophora and Christian Santarelli, 19th; and Alyssa Pequignot, 20th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell.  Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe or spray it on the area and wipe.  Much better smell than bleach.”

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever it is you plan on doing.   Heard it’s to be quite cold by the weekend; we’ll take what we get.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 8, 2016 by Bob McGuireDecember 8, 2016

Weather is still pretty nice, except for the wind that doesn’t quit blowing.  The weekend was pretty good, with temperatures in the 40’s.  We’ll see if we get the snow that’s supposed to be coming.  I would rather not see it, but it is winter and we’ve been pretty lucky so far.  Lots of nice decorations around town for the Christmas Holidays.

Sympathy from the community to the family, relatives and friends of Donna Work who passed away on Saturday.  Funeral will be held on Friday from Dean Homer Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Basil’s Church, with her pastor, the Rev Richard Rojas, officiating.  Interment will be in the Parish cemetery.   She will be missed.

Retro hoodies are now available.  Check out www.lopezcivicassociation.com to see what they look like and prices.  They’ve been requested by many and will be a good addition to your wardrobe for the wintry weather.  Contact me at the info below if interested in ordering.  You can also contact Brian McGuire at 570-928-9838.

Remember:  No Civic meeting for the month of December.  Everyone is busy with Christmas and New Year’s, so we take some time off.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Mrs. Irene Huray spent some time over the Thanksgiving holiday with her daughter, Irene Pequignot, Linden.  Shawn Pequignot family; Jennifer (Pequignot) Laird family; and Kevin Pequignot and daughter, Alyssa, all had Thanksgiving with them.  Good time for all, with lots of left-overs for the following week.

Happy Birthday to Aaron Risser; 9th; Andrea (Matychak) Anderson, 12th; Dylan Amon, 13th; and Noah Brown, 14th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Hate foggy windshields?  Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car.  When the windows fog, rub with the eraser.  Works better than a cloth.”  (Have to try that.  I hate foggy windshields.)

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, even if we do get a little snow.  Kids and hunters will like it, even if some of us “older” folks don’t.   Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Does anyone remember the Cherry Township High School JUNIOR PROM memory dance booklet of May 14,1948???????? I have one.  If interested, I will put some of the pages on in the future.

Lopez, PA Posted on December 1, 2016 by Bob McGuireDecember 1, 2016

Hope you all had a very nice Thanksgiving.  The weather sure cooperated most places for those who were traveling.  Saturday we woke up to some snowy ground cover; didn’t last long.  Sunday we woke up again with snowy ground cover; didn’t last long.  Temperatures were up above 40 both days with some sunshine.  Last I heard, the week is to be pretty good, with a chance of rain.   I’ll take that over really cold, windy, snowy days.

Thanks to Dave, Ruth, Clair, Macrina, Bob and JoAnn for taking time out of their busy schedules on Friday to meet and decorate the monument area and pavilion for the Christmas season.  Weather was in their favor; ground wasn’t frozen so was easy to pound the rods in the ground.  We didn’t have to slosh through the snow back and forth.  All in all, a good day.  Good job, everyone.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, spent Thanksgiving with Bob, JoAnn and Brian McGuire.  Had a nice dinner at Brian’s and enjoyed the afternoon playing Win, Lose or Draw.   Was a fun time.

Cory McDonald came in from Rhode Island to spend some time over the Thanksgiving holiday with his family and friends.

First marking period Distinguished Honor Roll:  Kyler Burke; Aaron Kinsey; Jacob Williams; Trevor Kinsey.   Honor Roll:  Paige Burke; Noah Brown.  Congratulations to all of you.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Happy Birthday wishes to Elexus Dunkleberger, 6th of December; Tony Sneidar, Jr., Marino Santarelli, and Robyne McCobin, all on the 8th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

HINT:  “Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste.  Add garlic at the end of the recipe if you want a stronger taste.”   (Never knew that, but I don’t use garlic much anyway.)  “Leftover Snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert.  Simply chop them in a food processor.  Peel, core and slice a few apples.  Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy over the apples.  Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.  Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.”

Guess I’ll take a look in Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book.  November 27, 1973 – fog, rain and 44 degrees.  Our temperature today was 44+, no fog and no rain.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; make the most of it.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 24, 2016 by Bob McGuireNovember 24, 2016

Well, the big news this week is the weekend snow storm we had…..our first for the season.  Saturday started out perfect with temperatures in the 60’s.  Saturday evening it started to spritz down some sprinkles, then it changed to snow.  By Sunday morning, we had about 6 inches of heavy, wet snow.  Sam and Gaige Burke even went out about 10 p.m. Saturday evening and made a snowman in the yard.  Sunday was a raw day with cold wind and some flurries off and on.  Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald enjoyed tobogganing on the hill and Heather had fun with the four wheeler.  So, it wasn’t a complete wash-out for those who like to be out in the cold. Don’t know what the week will be for us, but heard it’s not to be too bad; temperatures in the upper 40’s.  That will be good for those traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Has anyone seen or heard any geese going South?  Someone mentioned quite a while ago they heard some.  I haven’t heard or seen any so don’t know if they’re around yet because of the nicer weather we had.  Now, I’m sure they’ll be heading to warmer climate.

Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, spent a few days at their home on Church Street.  Joe got to play horseshoes in Benton while he was here.  Guess they also had some snow plowing and shoveling to do too.

For those of who who missed the play, “A Fractured Election” on Friday or Saturday evening at the New Albany Fire Co. Social Hall, you missed a great show.  Those folks who put that on did an excellent job and kept the crowd laughing the whole time.  Can’t wait for what they’ll come up with for next year.

St. Vladimir’s Church is having an Ethnic dinner on Sunday, the 27th, Russian Hall, Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or Take out.  BYOB.   They also have pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

REMINDER:   There will be a work bee at the Monument to decorate for Christmas.  If you’re free on Saturday, the 25th, 11 a.m., come on up to the Pavilion and help.  Many hands make light work.

There will be no Civic meeting for the month of December so everyone can enjoy the Holiday season.

Hint:  “Looking for a “green” way to clean your faucets, sinks and stainless steel?  Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean.   Not only will it remove the tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won’t leave streaks and won’t harm your fingers while you clean.”

Good luck hunters as you go into the woods to “bag the big one” (either a deer or a bear).

Hope you all have a very nice Thanksgiving with loved ones during this special time.  Also, give thanks to those who won’t be home for the Holiday as they are serving our Country to keep us safe and free.  We thank them for their service.

Guess that’s all the news for this time.  Enjoy your week as best you can.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

As you can see, the Lopez Cotton Trees are in full bloom.  This crop of cotton produced about 6 inches.  YUK!!!!

Well, we sure can’t complain about the weather; it’s been great almost all week.  Other than a few frosty mornings and some really wicked wind, the days warmed up nicely. Last I heard, it’s to be nice right through Thanksgiving.  Let’s hope so.  Did you get to see the Super Moon??  It was awesome!!

Sympathy from the community to the family and friends of Jim Yarnall who passed away on Tuesday, the 8th.  Funeral was held on Saturday, the 12th, from Dean Homer Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Dyer officiating.   He will be missed; he was a friend to all.

Visiting last week with Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, were her girlfriends, from Marlton, NJ, Michele Utz and Karen Bookwalter and son, Casey.  They enjoyed quad riding and a trip to the Alpaca farm.  Was a great visit; weather was great and Mary wished they could have stayed longer.

Ted and Mary Lowden were also visited by the bear last week.  Mary said she’s now out of bird feeders and they lost one just a while ago.  I told her maybe she should not put any out until she knows they are in hibernation.

Did you get to see the play, “A Fractured Election”?  If not, you still have time.  Final performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the New Albany Social Hall.  Doors open one hour before the play.  Get out and support these guys who do a great job with this fund raiser.  They also have raffles, etc. to help with making some money.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

St. Vladimir’s Church is also hosting an Ethnic Dinner on Sunday, the 27th, Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or take out and BYOB.

Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek, visited on Sunday with Bob and JoAnn McGuire.  Had a nice time and tasty lunch with them while they were here.  Jr. brought up some of his homemade pumpkin/ cinnamon buns, complete with homemade cream cheese/pumpkin spice icing.  Delicious.

Happy Birthday wishes to send out to Alek Laird and Mike McDonald, 19th; Jaeden Patson, 20th; Jeff Olsen, 22nd; Serenity Laird and Reese Baton, 23rd; and Cassidy Brown, 30th.   Hope you all have a super day.

Happy Anniversary to TJ and Allison Lowden as they celebrate on the 17th.  Have a nice day.

HINT:  “Keep a few pieces of bread in your cookie jar to keep your cookies soft longer.  May have to put new ones in after a few days.”  (I do this and it does work.)   “To cut down on odors when cooking cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli, add a little vinegar to the water.”  (Now, this is one I’ll have to try; it does get pretty “stinky” when cooking.)

I guess the hunters are still out and about in the woods.  Haven’t heard of any lucky ones so far, so guess they’ll keep hunting until the season is over.

Thanksgiving is coming soon.  Hope you all have a blessed day with loved ones at this special time.  Give thanks also to those who are serving our country to keep us free and won’t make it home for the Holiday.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; should be a good one.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.  Keep the hints coming.

Been having some nice weather for a few days; other than the wind, that is.  Sun feels good, but the wind could go away.  Was over 50 degrees both Saturday and Sunday and last I heard it’s to be above normal, with no storms, right through the 19th.  Can you believe that?  We’ll see.

Halloween went very well at the Pavilion.  Had lots of kids all costumed up waiting to be judged, after having some snacks.  Thanks to Dave, Ruth and Clair for taking on the job of judging.  Winners were:  0-3 – Original – Henry Ritinski; Pretty – Hailey Mensch; Funny – Grayson Burke.  4-7 – Original – Gaige Burke; Pretty – Kyleigh McDonald; Funny – Miles Baton.  8-11 – Original – Angel Clark; Pretty – Ember Higley; Funny – Landyn Sperry.  12 – Up – Original – Alexis Musani; Pretty – Katherine Kapler; Funny – Eric Applegate.  Thanks to Brian McGuire for driving the truck with the hay wagon and taking the kids around town to visit the houses to get their treats.   Kids, as well as adults, enjoyed the ride and the town folk were happy to see them.  Thanks to Kathy Neufer and family for chairing the event this year.  Did a great job. Thanks to all who donated in any way to make this a fun time.  And, most of all, thanks to those who left their porch light on for the kids to stop by.

Spending the weekend with Ted and Mary Lowden, Maple Terrace, was her brother, Jack Eggers and his friend, Barbara Royko, Glassboro, NJ.  They enjoyed Jolly Trolley and World’s End.  It was a great weekend and Ted and Mary loved having them here.  Hope they visit again soon.

Sympathy from the community to Pat (Romania) Burd and family on the passing of Al Burd on the 26th of October.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

St. Vladimir’s Church is having an Ethnic Foods dinner on Sunday, November 27th, Noon to 5 p.m.  Eat in or take out and BYOB.

New Albany Volunteer Fire Co. play is coming up on Saturday, the 12th at 7 p.m. and Sunday, the 13th at 2 p.m.  It will also be done again on Friday, the 18th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, the 19th at 7 p.m.  It is called “A Fractured Election” and should be another good one.  If you get a chance, take a ride out to the Fire Hall in New Albany and support their endeavors.

Guess I forgot some birthdays last week.  Happy belated birthday to Doc Shoemaker on the 1st; Tim Bullis, 5th; Devon DeSanto and Tai Iwancio 6th; Terry Bullis, 7th; and Grayson Burke, 8th.  Hope you all had a nice day.

Birthday wishes now to “B” from all his gang as he celebrates on the 11th; Aiden Sperry, 13th; and Monica Black, 16th.  Have a really nice day.

Happy Anniversary to V Rev Gary and Georgette Matychak as they celebrate on the 10th.  Have a nice day and many more.

HINT:  “For left over salad, put a paper towel over the top instead of a lid.  This keeps the salad fresh and any cheese that’s used will not get soggy.”  “To get rid of musty basements smells, put charcoal in a flat one foot by two foot box and sprinkle with one pint of Epsom salts.  Scattering a few charcoal here and there also works.”

I think that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week.  I see, since the weather is nice, that a few are putting out their Christmas decorations.   Gotta get past Thanksgiving first.   Don’t know if any of the hunters are lucky; haven’t heard anything, but the season will be here for a while.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   I will get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Lopez, PA Posted on November 3, 2016 by Bob McGuireNovember 3, 2016

What a weekend.  Was miserable on Saturday with cold and wind.  Sunday was very rainy with thunder and lightning, but at least the temperature went up to 61 degrees, which is unusual, so won’t complain.   All week is to be pretty good, with temperatures in the upper 50’s.

Mary Kravetz recently was visited by her niece and husband, Mary Jane and Tom McDonald, Nesconset, Long Island, New York.  They went out for lunch at Big Wheels Meat House in Dushore.   Joining them for lunch were Annabelle Kravetz, Mildred; Debbie (Kravetz) McDonald, Muncy Valley; and Don and Irene (Kravitz) Risser, Millersville.  After lunch, the group had dessert and coffee at the home of Annabelle Kravetz.

Don’t forget the play, “A Fractured Election” is coming up on Nov. 12th and 13th and Nov. 18th and 19th at the New Albany Fire Hall.  These folks put on a fun play.  They also have other things at the Hall to take part in.   Attend this play and support the Fire Company.

NOTICE:  Remember to turn your clocks BACK one hour on Sunday, November 6th.

Mrs. Irene Huray recently spent some time with her daughter, Irene Pequignot and family, Linden.  They all helped her celebrate her birthday while she was there.

REMEMBER:  Election Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 8th.   Be sure you get out and vote.  It’s your privilege to do that.

Haven’t heard if any of the hunters have been successful with either deer hunting or turkey hunting.  I know Ted and Mary only have to go out their front door and they can have all the turkeys they want.  They also had the bear the other evening and he did a job on the bird feeder and burning barrel.  So, guess they haven’t hibernated yet; guess it’s too warm so they’ll stick around.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, spent a few days at her home on Church Street.

Hope everyone had a nice, safe Halloween.    Weather was nice for Saturday and was supposed to be good for Monday too.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “When you grate cheese to freeze, toss with a bit of cornstarch to keep it from sticking together.”   “A few drops of lemon juice added to simmering rice will keep the grains separated.”  (Have to try the rice one; mine is always a big blob.)

Guess that’s about the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; never know what it’s going to do next.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.   Get it to me by late Sunday afternoon and I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

hayBrian drove all the happy Halloweeners in the big hay wagon on a fun trip to all the homes that had their lights on to treat the kids.  Good job Brian.

Sure can’t say a whole lot of good about the weather for the weekend.  Was pretty miserable; so much wind, rain, and cold temperatures.   Sun is supposed to show herself this week and I hope she does.  Would feel pretty good.

Tom and Cynthia Arnone, Buffalo, NY, recently spent a few days with Roseanne Lukachik.  Was a nice time for all.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

St. Vladimir’s Church is having a Halupki dinner on Sunday, the 30th, Noon to 4 p.m. at the Church Hall.  Eat in or take out.

Halloween party, the 31st, Pavilion, 6 p.m., refreshments and prizes.  Have your porch light on if you’d like kids to stop by.

Bob and JoAnn McGuire went on a bus trip to Rochester, NY, on Saturday.  They were with some Che-Hanna Rock and Mineral Club members.  This was to attend the Rochester mineral club show, held at the Armory.  You talk about wind.  You think it’s windy here, go to Rochester; you could barely walk from one spot to another.  On the return trip, we stopped at Letchworth State Park in Castile, NY.  The falls were awesome, with double rainbows and the water was barreling over the falls.  Not much nice foliage; the wind and rain had knocked the leaves off the trees and there was no color.  But, it was a nice trip to the show and the Park and visiting with friends.

Just a reminder to get out and vote on November 8th.  It’s your right and your privilege, so just do it.

Don’t forget the New Albany Volunteer Fire Co. play is coming up November 12 and 13; 18 and 19.  Should be pretty good again this year.  Mark your calendar now and plan to attend.

Happy belated birthday to Maddie Pochatko who celebrated on the 24th.  Hope you had a good day.

HINT:  “Remedy for upset stomach:  2 cups water 1/4 tsp. baking soda, 2 tablespoons honey, 1/4 cup orange juice.  Mix all the ingredients in the blender.  Take 1 tablespoon every half hour or as tolerated.  Take right after vomiting, if possible.”

Guess that’s it.  Enjoy your week, it’s to be much more pleasant than what we’ve had, or so I hope.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at:  news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

WOW!!   I guess we’re getting some Indian summer and I like it.  The weekend was pretty nice after a few days of cool weather.   Supposed to get back up to the high 60’s, low 70’s for the week.   I can handle it.  We did have some pretty good frost a couple of days.   Don’t really like what’s coming later on; hopefully not as bad as “they” are predicting.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order call 570-928-1099.

Membership dues for 2017 are now being taken; see Molly Johnson to pay yours or to become a member.  Just costs a buck; can’t beat that.

Did you mark your calendar for the dates in November that the New Albany Volunteer Fire Company is presenting their play?  If not, you will miss out on a great time.  See the ad in last week’s Sully too.  Should be fun and it’s a nice fund raiser for the Fire Company.

We visited Bob, Jr. and Tyler McGuire, Hunlock Creek on Saturday.  Had a nice time.  We then went to Forty Fort to visit Bob’s sister, Lola and Mike Mattie.  She puts up an awesome Halloween display every year and this year was better than ever.

Halloween party coming up on the 31st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Refreshments and prizes.  If you’d like the “spooks” to stop by your house, please have your porch light on.

Happy Birthday to Aine Lee McDonald, 21st; Marty Whatley, 25th; Makayla Day, 27th; Lydia Spinosa, 28th; Leo McDonald and Misty Pequignot, 31st.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Annivesary to Kevin and Terry Bullis as they celebrate on the 20th;  Bruce and Helen (Maximiak) Amon on the 24th; Tom and Kristin (Anderson) Iwancio, 25th; and Marty and Dee Whatley, 27th.   Have a great day.

HINT:  “For chest congestion or a cold, put cider vinegar on a cloth and place the cloth on your chest for two hours.”  (Don’t know how many times you have to do this, but with cold season here or coming, give it a try.)  Here’s a nice air freshner:  Cut an orange in half; remove the pulp and fill the peel with salt.  Will provide a pleasant aromatic scent anywhere in your home.  (Thanks for the good tips, Carole.)

Guess that’s about it for now.  Enjoy your week; it’ll be super.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Fall is in the air for sure this past weekend.  Saturday was not too bad; did have some rain, but not like what was predicted.  Sunday was something else.  Was very cold and windy; sun peeked out for a short time in the afternoon, but not long and as the day wore on, the colder it got.  I guess that other Season isn’t too far behind.  I heard it’s to warm up the end of the week, but we’ll see.  Just like we were supposed to get three to four hours of steady rain on Saturday; didn’t get much at all.  Maybe some places did, but we didn’t.  Thoughts and prayers go out to all those that were affected by Hurricane Matthew; they sure have a lot of damage, no power and some have no home to go to.

Congratulations and good luck to Ann Marie of Winterland Winery as she has moved to her new location.  It is South of Dushore on Route 220, what used to be called Rock Run.  Stop in and see her, wish her well.  Lopez will miss her.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, October 18th, 6 p.m. probably at the Township Building since the weather is getting colder.

The Civic Halloween party will be held on Halloween night, the 31st, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Prizes and refreshments.   If you want the ghosts and goblins to stop by, please leave your porch light on.

Mark your calendars now.  The New Albany Volunteer Fire Company will have a play again this year.  “A Fractured Election” will take place on Saturday, November 12th at 7 p.m.; Sunday, November 13th at 2 p.m.; Friday, November 18th at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, November 19th at 7 p.m.  If you haven’t been to previous plays, you’ve missed a great time, so make a note and try to attend one of the performances.  They do a great job and there will be lots of laughs.  Doors open one hour before start of the play.

HINT:  “Salt can be used for cleaning oil spills in the garage.  Sprinkle salt on the spill and wait 15 minutes.  It makes cleaning much easier.”

Happy Birthday to Mickey Bednar, 13th; Bob Burke, 14th; Ken Smith and Karen Bednar, 17th ; and Marie Cikovic, 19th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Ted and Fay Puzo as they celebrate on the 14th.  Have a great day.

The turkeys are still around; probably be in hiding once the season starts and the hunters are out to get them.   Same with the deer; see only a couple now and then.  They are in hiding.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy this cool Fall weather.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Lopez, PA Posted on October 5, 2016 by Bob McGuireOctober 5, 2016

The weather sure is changing.  Temperatures have gone down.  We had some rain showers on Saturday and a few sprinkles on Sunday, but it was downright cool.  The leaves are changing color more every day.  We’ve had frost a couple of times and there will be more coming soon, I’m sure.  Where’s that Indian summer we usually get?  Guess that was a couple weeks ago.  Haven’t seen the humming birds recently and there have been a couple of reports of hearing geese fly over.  We’ve seen a lot of turkey in the yard across the street and a couple deer.   Speaking of deer, it’s archery season now, so stay away from the woods.  Some of these hunters can get kinda reckless at times and wouldn’t want anyone to get shot, thinking you are a deer.

Got the following to share:  “Don and Irene (Kravitz) Risser, Millersville, had their card group spend the weekend at their home on Route 487.  Kitty Glass, Millersville, and Bob Coley, Lancaster, enjoyed the stellar weather on Saturday and Sunday.  They played a lot of pinochle and did several other activities as well.  They had brunch at the Jolly Trolley, Dushore, on Saturday and enjoyed the painted toilet seat display.  On their drive home, they were lucky enough to see a large bear and her three cubs run across the road near Murraytown.  In the afternoon, they enjoyed a walk and found wild cranberries and a few beechnuts left on the beech trees.   Saturday evening, the group had dinner at The Fireplace Restaurant, near Tunkhannock.  A good time was had by all.

Irene Risser visited Mary Kravetz on Sunday afternoon.  That evening, she spent a couple of hours visiting with her school friend, Irene Kachmarsky.  They had fun going down memory lane.  They were members of the Sullivan County High School, class of 1966.  This year is the 50th anniversary of their high school graduation.

Jeffrey, Kristin (McDonald) and Hailey Mensch, Forksville, visited on Sunday with Mike, Heather, Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald.  They helped Kyleigh celebrate her 7th birthday.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Salt placed inside a cloth that has been moistened keeps snow and ice from sticking to your windshield.”  (With the frosty weather about here, have to try that.)

Happy Birthday wishes to Gwen Hontz and Dylon Pequignot, 7th; Irene Huray and Ryan Weisbrod, 8th; Sally Housekneckt, 12th.   Hope you all have a nice day.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  October 2, 1980 – light rain and 56 degrees.  Our weather was sprinkles, breezy and cool.   And, I don’t like what’s coming either.  I did hear there is a warm up for the end of the week.  That will be nice.

That’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; might have to put some warmer clothes on, but that’s ok too.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  If you know of an event that will be taking place, and you’d like it in the paper, please let me know.   I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Weather is turning much cooler, with temperatures in the low 30’s over the weekend and some pretty windy conditions at times.  Have you noticed the leaves are starting to change color.  So, it’s coming…………..don’t like it, but can’t change Mother Nature’s mind and give us warm weather for a while yet.  Haven’t heard or seen any geese going over yet, but I’m sure it won’t be long.  I think the humming birds have already left.  The gardens and flower beds are winding down.  We do see many turkeys every day going back and forth and a few deer now and then.

Congratulations to Maranna Nitcznski who won the title of Outstanding Young Woman and to Danielle Reeser who was named third runner-up. Lauren Chase also was a contestant and did a fantastic job with her vocal of “Sound of Music”.   This event was held Saturday evening at the Towanda Jr./Sr. High School in Towanda.  Second year in a row with a winner from Sullivan County.

The month of October will soon be here and still a few things going on around the County.  Keep an eye on the Sully to see what, where and when; there may be something of interest to you.

Cory McDonald was in from Rhode Island to spend some time with family and friends.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, October 18th, 6 p.m. at the Township Building.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-9238.

Time to start thinking of your Halloween costume for the annual Civic Association party.  Will be on Halloween night, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion, with refreshments and prizes.  So, put your thinking cap on and see what you can come up with.

HINT:  “For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed.  Melt Andes mints in a double broiler and pour over warm brownies.  Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.”  (That sounds pretty good; better than those sweet icings.)

Happy Birthday wishes to Kurt Schroeder, 29th.  Have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Dustin and Samantha Burke who celebrate on the 28th.  Gaige and Grayson send happy wishes to you.

Birthdays in early October include Elizabeth Kapler, 1st; Joe Fanning, and Kyleigh McDonald, 2nd.  Have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary in October to Tony and Donna (Lansberry) Cikovic as they celebrate on the 2nd.  Hope it’s a good one.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  September 25, 1980 – 48 degrees with light rain.  Our weather, same day was no rain, cool temperatures with some sun and windy, 62 degrees.

Some of the Borick off-spring enjoyed the Fall weather down at “Tent City” over the weekend.  They all like Lopez in any kind of weather.

I think that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever your plans.  Bloomsburg Fair is in full swing this week, so take a trip down that way.  Of course, that’s why we’ll have rain toward the end of the week.  Almost every year there is rain sometime during the Fair.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

MARANNA NITCZNSKI WINS OUTSTANDING YOUNG WOMAN TITLE

Sullivan County’s Miss Maranna Nitcznski won the 2017 OYW title, held Saturday evening at Towanda Jr./Sr. High School.  She also won the award for Aerobics and Fitness.  Her Mixed Martial Arts demonstration was great.  Our Miss Danielle Reeser was named Third Runner-Up.  Her original monologue, “How I Learned How to Survive Sullivan County”, was so funny, cute and said it all.  The other winners were:  Fourth Runner-Up: Abigail Martin, Canton Jr./Sr. High School; Second Runner-Up: Ezoza Ismailova, Towanda Are Jr./Sr. High School; First Runner-Up: Adriana Romano, Sayre Area School District.   The other Sullivan County participant, Lauren Chase, did an excellent and enjoyable vocal performance of “Sound of Music”.  What a powerful voice she has.  All the girls did well and all really are winners.  The Sullivan County 2016 OYW winner and co host this year was Bridget Reed.

Saturday was not a bad day; kinda cool and cloudy.  Sunday was something else. Started out cloudy and cool; then we started to get the rain about 6 p.m.  It would rain hard, quit, rain hard again.  By midnight we had close to two inches and it was still pouring at that time.  Don’t know what the total amount turned out to be, but it sure is needed so what we get is good.  There was some thunder and lightning, but not a lot.  We were lucky as I did hear that Muncy got hit quite hard with a damaging storm.  Didn’t really get the news, so don’t know what the week’s weather will bring.  Guess we’ll have to take whatever we get.  Wednesday is the first day of Autumn and someone said we may get some Indian summer yet; don’t like what comes after that.

Got a call from Roseanne Lukachik who has a cat missing.  So, be on the look-out for a Manx cat called Kitty, male, about 8 pounds, black with white and yellow tint, white belly and chest, two white pads on front feet and back legs are all white.  If you see this cat, please call Roseanne at 570-928-9067.  I think he’ll even come to you if you call him.  Hopefully, he’ll turn up soon.

Tony and Patti Sneidar, Philadelphia, spent the weekend at their home on Church Street.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, please call 570-928-1099.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, visited on Sunday with his parents, Bob and JoAnn McGuire.  They brought lunch and it was enjoyed by all.

Hope many of you got to go to the Bow Hunters Festival at the Forksville Fairgrounds over the weekend.  There is usually a big turn-out, so hope it did well again this year.

Coming up on October 8th is the Fall Festival in Dushore; and October 8th and 9th is the 36th annual Sullivan County Fall Festival, held at the Fairgrounds.  Watch the Sully for details on these events.

Sister Helene, Sister Christine and Sophia, all from the Orthodox Monastery, Ellwood City, are spending some time at St. Nicholas House on Church Street.  They are enjoying their time and hope to visit some of the State Parks while they are here.

Happy Birthday to Bob Day and Jim Kauffman, 23rd; Annaliese Froese, 25th; Ted Beaver and Dinky Burke, 27th.  Hope you all have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Jon-Paul and Jen Matychak, 25th; and Chris and Michele Craig, 27th.  Have a good day.   Congratulations and many more.

B’s gang says “Happy Birthday” to Tom Finan as he celebrates on the 25th.  Have a super day.

HINT:  “Sprinkle salt on shelves as a repellent to keep ants away (safer than many bug killers)”.

Another use for salt:  “Create a paste that consists of salt, vinegar and flour and you have the perfect cleaner for brass, copper and pewter”.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  September 18, 1973, rain and 56 degrees.  Guess that about says it for the same date now; could have gotten a little warmer than 56 degrees later in the day.

Guess that’s it for this time.  Enjoy your week; even a little rain won’t hurt you, so get out.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.  Keep the hints coming; I do get a lot of comments on them and some and been tried and work; a few have not worked, but I guess that’s life, right.   Win some; lose some; goes with the flow.

We had another really nice weekend.  The rain was welcome on Saturday evening, along with the thunder and lightning.  I’m sure the gardens and flower beds enjoyed a good drink.  We got .22 inches.   I guess most of the week is to be warm again, with rain maybe toward the end of the week.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, the 20th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.   Membership dues now being taken by Molly Johnson.

Many of the Borick off-spring were here at “Tent City” to spend the weekend at their campers on Turrell Street.  Had an enjoyable time.  Awesome fireworks on Saturday evening by “Boom booms by B”.  Got to see them just before the rain came.   They were enjoyed by many.

Bow Hunters Festival is coming up this weekend, the 16th, 17th and 18th at the Forksville Fair Grounds.  Take a ride down and see what all happens there.  Lots to see and do.

Happy Birthday to Mya Evans, 20th; and Roland Dayton, 21st.  Hope you have a nice day.

There will still be things going on in the County during the month of October, so watch the Sully to find out what may interest you.

We had a wonderful weekend for the end of the summer things going on.  Oh wait, in October there will be things going on too. Keep a watch on the Sully to see what, when and where those things will be taking place. Labor Day weekend was really nice and many got to have picnics, go fishing, or just getting out and enjoying the nicer weather.  Do feel for those that were hit with Hurricane Hermine; some folks lost everything and many are still without power.  So, we were very lucky it stayed far enough away so we didn’t have problems.

I hope many of you got to go to the Sullivan County Fair in Forksville.  Was lots to see and do and the entertainment on the outside stage was great.  The Greenwood Boys did another excellent job of entertaining the many folks that sat and listened; some even got into the swing of things by clapping their hands, moving their feet and even singing along.  There was lots of great food to please your appetite.   The Fair concluded on Labor Day.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

TJ and Allison Lowden, along with “Wesson”, Marlton, NJ, spent the long weekend at their home on Church Street.  Joining them was Allison’s mother, Michelle Held; her brothers, Josh Held and Jeff Corbett; her sister, Ashley Held, and friend, Brian Klock, all from Marlton, NJ.  They all had a great time while they were here.  They also spent time with TJ’s parents, Ted and Mary Lowden, Lilac Lane.

TJ Lowden, Josh Held, Jeff Corbett, Brian Klock and Ted Lowden were good neighbors on Saturday when they all helped Mike McDonald cut, split and stack his winter supply of firewood.  Heather and the girls also did a good job helping.

Tony and Patti Sneidar, Philly, spent the Labor Day Holiday at their home on Church Street and had neighbors and friends visit while they were here.

Sympathy from the community to the family and friends of Roy Pirritano who passed away on August 25th, in Exton, where he lived.  A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 10th, at SS Phillip and James Parish, Exton.  He spent many summers and hunting seasons at his place on Dutch Mountain.  He will be missed.

Next Civic meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 20th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  If there is bad weather, it will be held in the Township Building.  Membership dues now being taken for 2017 by Molly Johnson.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Susan (Pirritano) Aharonian, 14th; JoAnn McDonald and Carmela Walosin, 19th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Ed and Kay Walton, Kingston and Lesterville, who celebrate on the 16th.  Hope you have a great day.  I’m sure your family has something nice planned for you.

Diane Fanning, Landenberg, and her cousin, Charlotte Grant, Bear, DE, are spending Tuesday to Thursday at the Fanning home on Church Street.  Weather should be good for them when they’re here.

HINT:  “Dawn dishwashing liquid makes great homemade bubbles.  Use 1/2 cup Ultra Dawn, 1/2 Gallon warm water and 1 TBSP glycerin (available at any drug store) OR White Karo syrup works also.  Stir gently.  Skim the foam off the top (too much foam breaks down the bubbles).  Dip bubble wand and get ready for some good, clean fun.”   (This is so easy.)

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  September 4, 1973 – Warm and 58 degrees.  Our September 4th weather was warm and a little higher than 58 degrees.   Evenings are cooling down so makes for good sleeping.  Weather is to be very warm again this week, into the weekend.  I’ll take it for sure.

Well, guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you may do.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Do you remember Concrete and years of swimming there??  It doesn’t look like you remember it now.  The big flood that took out the bridge also rearranged concrete dam that use to catch the logs for the saw mill.

August 31,  2016

Wasn’t a bad weekend, so hope you all enjoyed it.  I could take a few more weeks of this.  I’m so not ready for the cold weather that will be here before long.  Seems like the gardens are still doing pretty good with plenty of veggies to be picked and canned or frozen.  Will come in handy during the winter season.

Well, kids are back in school; don’t know if they really like the idea yet, but they will do fine, I’m sure.

Got the following e-mail to share:  On Thursday evening, Joe and Diane (Charnik) Fanning, along with Molly, Landenberg, and granddaughter, Haley Latch, St. Georges, DE, arrived at their home on Church Street for a week’s vacation.  On Thursday evening they were joined by Haley’s mother, Toni Latch, and friend, Angelo Gattinella.  On Friday, Joe, Haley, Toni and Angelo went on a five mile bike ride and had an enjoyable time.  Saturday, Toni, Haley and Angelo went to Ricketts Glen and took the three mile waterfall hike and saw approximately 10-12 waterfalls.  They really enjoyed the beautiful falls; it was followed up by renting kayaks and touring the lake.  Said they can’t wait until next year to do some more.  Toni and Angelo went home Sunday morning while the rest of the family stayed for the week.  Went to the movies on Monday and saw “Pete’s Dragon”; said it was an excellent film for everyone to see.  The weather was beautiful and all had a great time here.  Angelo even got to see his first bear while he was here.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

By the time you get your Sully, the Sullivan County Fair will be in full swing.  So, take a ride on down to the Forksville Fair Grounds and see what’s going on.  Something for everyone and fun for all.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Membership dues now being taken for 2017.  See Molly Johnson to pay your dues or become a member of the Civic Association.

Happy Belated Birthday to Macrina Potchatko who celebrated 16 years on August 23rd.  Hope you had a good day.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Kristin (McDonald) Mensch, September 5th; Miles Baton, 8th; and Alexia Vermiere, 13th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Shawn and Crystal Pequignot, 4th; Joe and Rose (McDonald) Sbardella, 5th; and Gus and Edith Tamburro and Jim and Barbara Craig, both on the 10th, as they celebrate 56 years.  Congratulations to all and have a great day.

B’s gang sends Happy Birthday greetings to “Roda” Stasiak, as she celebrates on the 6th.  (I know it will be a good one.)

HINT:  “Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower??  Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror; it will eliminate fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.”

Hope you all have a safe, happy Labor Day holiday.  guess that’s the last real summer vacation time.  There will still be Fall activities going on in the County, so keep a check on the Sully to see where and when.

Guess that’s it for now.  Enjoy your week; I did hear there may be a few showers, but it will be warm.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

honor roll webI am still looking for a photo of the Lopez Honor Roll that doesn’t have flowers, wreaths or people in front of it.  I would like to be able to read all of the names that were on it.

Lopez, PA Posted on August 24, 2016 by Bob McGuireAugust 25, 2016

Well, the heavens opened up on Sunday and Mother Nature provided us with some drenching rain.   The Civic picnic was held on Sunday afternoon, despite the pounding rain, and all enjoyed the  variety of food and visiting.   Last I heard, it’s to be nicer for the week, with rain maybe coming in on Friday.  The creeks sure rose and I’m bet the gardens were glad for some water.  There was a nice rainbow early Sunday evening.

School starts on Thursday, so hope good luck to all during this new school year.  Seems like summer just started and I know many are not ready to go back yet.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, visited on Sunday with us and Tyler is spending his last little vacation here before he starts school on Monday, the 29th.   They enjoyed the picnic on Sunday.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Lola Mattie, and daughter, Georgia and Michael  Martin, Forty Fort, visited her brother, Bob and JoAnn McGuire on Sunday and enjoyed the Civic picnic, even though it rained.

Don’t forget, Sullivan County Fair is coming up the end of the month, into Labor Day.  I’m sure there will be something you’d be interested in.  There are Fair books and brochures around the County, so pick one up and see what’s going to be taking place.  There is always good food, good entertainment and lots of displays and animals to see.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.   Membership dues for 2017 are being collected.  See Molly Johnson to pay yours and to become a member.  Costs one whole buck.

HINT:  “Use full strength white vinegar to clean wood cutting boards and butcher block countertops.  This is a great alternative to dishwasher detergent because that can weaken surfaces and wood fiber.  it disinfects against E-coli, salmonella and staphylococcus.”

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:
August 22, 1980 – mild and 56 degrees.  Same day, 2016 we have sunshine, warm, little breeze and 60 degrees at 8 a.m.  I’m sure it will warm up considerable as the day goes on.    Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; it’s to be a little less humid and more bearable, so get out and about.

Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Here is another photo of the 1923 REO Speedwagon.  A story has it that it went to the Allentown area????

Lopez, PA Posted on August 17, 2016 by draco66August 18, 2016

Another nice weekend.  Did get some much needed rain on Saturday and Sunday, but it didn’t last long so didn’t do a whole lot.  Rain predicted during the week, so maybe the gardens will get a good drink.

Don’t forget….Saturday, the 20th, is the flea market at the Pavilion, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Hope to see you there.  Spaces still available.   So, clean out your attic, garage or basement and see what you no longer need or want and get a table and make a few bucks.

Sunday, the 21st, is the Civic picnic, 2 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Bring a dish to pass and your table service.  This is for all those who helped to make Old Home Days such a success.  It’s also for anyone in the community who would like to come, even if you didn’t help Old Home Days.  It’s a community picnic and open to the community.  A good time to visit and get to know your neighbors.

Thanks to Lambert’s, Ron Gutosky and Ronnie Patson for making the hay ride the success it was during Old Home Days.  Much appreciated.  Thanks also to “Tent City” and others for their donations for the stupendous fireworks display on Saturday night of Old Home Days.   Had a lot of great comments on the awesome fireworks show.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  Call 570-928-1099 to order yours.

If you missed out on Lopez mugs at Old Home Day, we still have a few left.  We have available 2013 (EUB Church); 2014 (The Lock Up); 2015 (Jackson Hotel); and 2016 (Lopez Restaurant).   They sell fast, so if you’re interested, contact me at the info below.

There are also t-shirts, koozies, sweat shirts and license plates available, if anyone is interested.

Didn’t make it to Dushore Founder’s Day so don’t know how that was, but I’m sure it was another good time for everyone.   The Outhouse races are always a fun event to watch and see all the different makes and designs of the outhouse.

Happy Birthday wishes to Andrew Froese, 20th; Mary (Maximiek) Santiago, 21st; Karly Amon, 26th; and Gaige Burke, 29th.  Have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Jason and Heather Burke as they celebrate on the 26th.  Have a nice day.

HINT:  “Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going to the pool?  Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes; the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite.  Works great on wrinkles too.!!”  (OK, girls, give that a try and let me know how many cucumber slices you had to use.)

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  August 14, 1978 – clear, cool and 50 degrees.   August 14, 2016 we had hot, humid, a couple of storms and had to be at least 80 degrees.  His would have been a little more comfortable.

Bob and I had an enjoyable time at the Che-Hanna Rock & Mineral Club picnic, held on Sunday at Saterlee Creek Environmental Center in Litchfield.  A nice group of folks attended; lots of kids; all enjoyed the picnic, games and gold panning.  We had a couple of down pours, but that didn’t make anyone leave early; we were under cover of the pavilion.  Everyone looks forward to the summer picnics there again next year.

Here is an early school photo

shuman_turnpike

Alex and Ginny Stavisky, Palm Bay, FL, and daughter, Cindy Stavisky, Orlando, FL, enjoyed some vacation time in Lopez.  Visited with many friends and neighbors and enjoyed Old Home Day while they were here.

Bob McGuire, Jr. and son, Tyler, Hunlock Creek, visited with Bob and JoAnn McGuire on Saturday on their way home from vacation.  They went to Corning glass, where Tyler made an all glass tic-tac-toe board, with the x’s and o’s.  They also went on the US side to Niagara Falls, and a couple of other places of interest.  Had a good time on their trip.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week, even if it does rain, should be warm.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I can’t put your news in if I don’t hear from you, so please let me know what’s going on with your family.   Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

WOW!!!   A super weekend is over.  Old Home Days was such a great success on Saturday and Sunday.  The Civic Association would like to thank everyone that was involved in any way to make this event the spectacular  time it was.   I hope you got to visit with old friends and make some new friends.  There were some folks that said this was their first time coming and they did enjoy it and will probably be back again next year.  The weather couldn’t have been better and all seemed to go pretty smoothly both days.

The annual Lopez flea market will be held on Saturday, August 20th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pavilion.  So, check out that attic, garage and basement to see what you may want to sell and make a couple bucks.  Like they say, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.  So, I’m sure you may find something you’d like to sell and something else you’d like to buy.

The annual Civic Association picnic will be held on Sunday, August 21st at the Pavilion at 2 pm.   This is for EVERYONE who helped with Old Home Days, before, during and after.  Also, for anyone in the community who would like to come.  Bring a dish to pass and your table service.  Come and relax and not have to work.  Hope to see you there.

Happy Birthday wishes to Lisa (Beaver) Sperry, 14th; Dustin Burke, 15th; Kevin Pequignot, 16th; and TJ Lowden, 17th.  Have a nice day.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

HINT:  “Easy way to remove silk from corn on the cob is to take a soft bristle toothbrush and run it down the cob.  Silk comes off like a charm.”  (Thanks, Lisa, for this tip.  She said it works great.)

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  August 7, 1979 – fair and cold and 34 degrees.  (That temp must have been early morning.)   I sure like our weather on that date, 2016.  We had sunshine, breeze and had to have been at least 80 degrees.  Beautiful day.

Guess that’s the news for now.  My eyes are about closing; it’s almost midnight on Sunday, so better close; probably got too many mistakes already.  Glad that Rose catches all of them.  Have news, give me a call at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at  news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading and the compliments.  Keep the hints coming.

Lopez, PA Posted on August 3, 2016 by draco66August 3, 2016

Had quite a rain storm on Saturday, but the rain was needed.  Some places got way more than we did and a lot of damage was done.  Didn’t get anything on Sunday; was hot and humid; a few dark clouds, but nothing came of them here.   Heard there are to be scattered showers during the week.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Had a nice phone chat with Delmar McCauley, an Irishman from Lancaster area.  Wanted to tell me he likes reading my column and all of the Sully.   He is now 83 years old, but had been up in Sullivan County many times and went through Lopez.  Said reading the news brings back many good memories.  Mentioned the people are much friendlier here than where he is now.  He also said when he would come here, he went to the Grand Canyon, enjoyed Ricketts Glen and liked to eat at the Forksville restaurant.  He now lives on a big farm with his son and is still able to get up on the machinery and help out, thanks to his son making it easy for him.  Thanks for the comments, Delmar, and hope you continue to enjoy the paper.

Congratulations to Anthony and Bethany Sneidar on the birth of their first baby, a son, Dominic Anthony, born on July 24th.  Have fun with the new little one.  Tony and Patti Sneidar are so happy to have a grandson.  Hope to see the new parents and baby in Lopez sometime.

Old Home Days this weekend.  Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight.  Food, games, dunk tank, Bingo, DJ “B” from 9 p.m. to midnight.  Fireworks after dark.  Sunday from Noon to 6 p.m.  All kinds of food, games, dunk tank, Bingo. t-shirts, koozies.  Chicken dinner at Noon.  Hope to see you there to visit with old friends and maybe make some new friends.

“Tent City” is booming again this year.  The relatives in the Borick family gather every year around this time to spend a week, some maybe more, at the homestead on Turrell St.  Many friends also come.  They all enjoy Old Home Days and they have lots of activities going on while they are here.

Many things going on in Sullivan County, so check the Sully to see what, when and where.

Happy Birthday wishes to Stephen Mikolajczyk and Scherril Dayton, August 4th; Kyle Froese and Kathy Lebo, 9th; Randy Lebo, Jackie Craig and Mary Lowden, 10th; Kari Spinosa, 11th; Al Kapler, 12th; and Linda Beaver, 13th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Don’t forget the Flea Market coming up on Saturday, August 20th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Something for everyone.

Red Rock Job Corps will be having their next picnic at the Pavilion on Thursday, August 11th, 6 p.m.

HINT:  “For easy starting barbecue, place charcoal briquettes in an empty egg carton.  Close the lid and when ready to start the fire, ignite the carton.  You can also soak the carton with charcoal starter beforehand.”
(I think there are quite a few yet who still use charcoal.)

I guess that’s about all for this time.  Enjoy your week; it’s to be pretty warm even if we do get some showers.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

How about a step back in time?  Any one remember this??

Was really appreciated.  Thanks to Chef Marty who grilled the dogs and burgers; Angie for potato salad and cupcakes; and Jr. for pasta salad.  Was enjoyed by all.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  24 July 1980 – Fair, cool and 52 degrees.   Wow!!!   We got that beat by a long shot.  Was very hot, muggy, sunny, and must have hit 80 degrees.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week, whatever you may do; probably spend time in the pool or the creek (if we get any water).  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at www.news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.

Was a really hot and humid weekend.  Some places got buckets of rain, thunder and lightning.  We got some thunder, no rain at all.  Sure do need the rain for the gardens, creeks and getting wells filled.  Last I heard the week is to be warm again with no rain, other than Monday and Tuesday that have already passed.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Mountain Steak, the new eatery on Route 118, owned and operated by Stacey Olsen is now open seven days a week.  They now have a kids menu; you can eat in or outside at a picnic table.  If you’re down that way, stop in to check them out and enjoy a good meal.  It’s just at the bottom of Red Rock Mountain.   The website is www.mountainsteak.com.  Check it out.

Duane and Patty Johnson were at their cabin on Turreltown Road during the Fourth of July weekend.  They had a big Mama bear and her cub playing in the yard and they have been hanging around since.  Happy belated birthday to Patty, whose birthday was on the 9th.  Hope you had a good day.

Not a bad weekend; did have a little bit of rain, but much more is needed to get things perked up.  Someone told me the weeds are even wilting in the garden.

Ted Lowden, Maple Terrace, has returned home from his six week motorcycle trip to Alaska with his two friends.  Said it was an amazing experience.  Traveled over 1800 miles through many states and many different types of weather; they met a lot of really nice folks along the way.  Some places had no people, just long, long roads from one point to the next.  He said he’s glad to finally be home.   They kept everyone informed on Face Book of the whole journey; was quite interesting.

Next Civic meeting, Tuesday, July 19th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Clean up at the Pavilion on Wednesday, July 20th, 10 a.m.  Volunteers would be appreciated.   Any help will be good.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  Please call 570-928-1099 to order.

Congratulations to Trevor Kinsey for Honor Roll status.  Also, congratulations to Kyler and Paige Burke, Layton Shea, Madison Burke, Aaron Kinsey and Jacob Williams for Distinguished Honors.  Good job, kids, and keep up the good work next year.

Happy Birthday wishes to Matthew Santarelli and Barbara Craig, 17th; Adam Aharonian, 18th; and Evalyn Lansberry and Sr. Ella Mae McDonald, 20th.  Hope you all have a great day.

Adel Bradshaw, West Chester, enjoyed a few days at her home on Church Street.

Joe and Diane Fanning, Landenberg, are spending some time at their home on Church Street.  The weather looks favorable while they’re here.

HINT:  “Know your potatoes.  There are two types – mealy and waxy.  Mealy potatoes (russets) cook up fluffy and light; use for baking, mashing and frying.  Waxy potatoes (red, new) hold their shape when sliced, diced, fried, scalloped or boiled whole.”  (Never knew that and will have to try and see if it’s true.)

Next 4-H Model Rocketry club meeting will be on Monday, the 18th, 2 p.m. at the Extension Office in Dushore.

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  July 10, 1979: Cloudy, mild and 62 degrees.  Our weather, same date, 2016: Clouds and sun, breezy and mild and 75 degrees.

Guess that’s the news for this time.  Enjoy your week; I hear it’s to be nice and the following week nicer yet, so get out and about.  Have news, call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Was a fantastic weekend for the 4th holiday.  Weather was great for picnics and parties.  Little windy and cold early on Sat., but turned out nice later and Sunday was super.   Hope you all had a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday.

Congratulations and good luck to Stacey Olsen who has opened and “eatery” at the bottom of Red Rock Mountain on Route 118.  Check out her website at www.mountainsteak.com.  Stop in to say hello and get a good meal.  She had a grand opening on June 29th.  It’s called Mountain Steak and Wings.

Sullivan County 4-H Rocketry meeting will be on Tuesday, July 11th, 2 p.m. at the Extension Office in Dushore.  New members welcome.  Any questions, call Bob at 570-928-9238.

Next Civic meeting will be on Tuesday, July 19th, 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.  Clean up at the Pavilion to get ready for Old Home Days will be on Wednesday, July 20th, 10 a.m.  Any volunteers that can help, it would be appreciated.  Many hands make light work.

St. Vladimir’s Church has pierogies for sale.  To order, call 570-928-1099.

Flea market at the Pavilion is coming up soon.  Will be on Saturday, August 20th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., so check your attic, garage and basement and see what you may not want anymore.  Maybe you can sell your items and get some “spending” money.

Mrs. Irene Huray and Miss Sophie Bednar spent a week with Irene Pequignot.  They attended the wedding of Jennifer Pequignot and Shawn Laird and also the graduation of Alyssa Pequignot.

Last Tuesday evening, on our usual walk, Heather Kaeleigh and Kyleigh McDonald and I ran into a bear up the dirt road.  He looked at us, we looked at him.  He walked up the road and we turned around and went down the road.  Then, on Thursday afternoon, about 3 p.m., we had him/her come down the road from us, walk into our yard as if it lived there.  Bob got a couple pictures from the front porch.  It then went next door, between the houses, back over in our yard and then down the hill.  Tony Sneidar, Jr. got pictures and a video of the same bear on Maple Terrace, by the former Rosie Gardner home.  Be aware as they are coming around much earlier in the day.  With little kids playing outside, you never know what the bear may do.

Bob and I were invited to World’s End State Park on Saturday evening where he (UVBOB) presented the fluorescent mineral program to the campers.  There were 80+ folks who attended, with lots of kids this time.  Was a very good program and enjoyed by all.  Many questions were asked and we were told it was very educational and “cool” to see what ugly rocks can do when put under ultraviolet lamps.  Thanks to Jane Swift of World’s End for inviting us and the super job of publicity she did in getting the word out for all to go to the Visitor’s Center to take part in the program.

WEs

Tony and Patti Sneidar, Philly, spent a few days over the Holiday at their home on Church Street.

Quite a few of the Borick “off-spring” enjoyed some days at “Tent City” over 4th of July.

Old Home Day is coming up.  It will be on Saturday and Sunday, August 6th and 7th.  Watch for the ad in the Sully for details.  Come, visit with old friends and make some new friends.   There will be a spectacular fireworks display and if you’d like to help off-set that cost, please send your donation to Brian McGuire, 197 Main Street, Lopez, PA  19628.  Will be much appreciated.

Happy Birthday wishes to Loretta Weidner and Samantha Burke, 7th; Dan Stasiak, 11th; Quinn Vinetelli, 12th; Woody Woodford, 13th; David Black and Molly Johnson, 14th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

Happy Anniversary to Mike and Heather McDonald on 9 years of marriage and also to Kristin (McDonald) and Jeffrey Mensch on 1 year of marriage.  Congratulations and many more.

Happy Anniversary also to David and Lavonne Black, and Matt and Scherill Dayton, 14th.  Have a good day.

HINT:  “Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge?  Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge and, wow, the squeak is gone.”

Here’s another good hint:  “When you buy a container of frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes.  You can double its size.  You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount and also eat less sugar per serving.”

From Mr. Neubauer’s little brown book:  July 3, 1982 – Cloudy, rain and 42 degrees.   Wow!!  I sure like ours for today much better.  It’s warm, sunny and no rain.  I’ll take it.

Charlotte Grant and her family, from Bear, DE, spent a few days over the Fourth at the Charnik/Fanning home on Church Street.  All had a good time.

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; should be pretty nice, along with some showers that are needed for the gardens, flower beds, creeks and wells.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  I’ll be here next time and thanks for reading.

Was a gorgeous weekend.  Hope this nice weather continues. I know rain is needed as it’s very dry, but I’ll take the more summer like weather.

Mr. Bruin has been back in town lately.  Many have seen him around and when we came into town late Sunday evening, he crossed the road in front of us, going from Flat Street to the lane by the Post Office.  Was the “big guy”.  Talking to a neighbor, I guess he had been seen up near Cold Spring also.  He was just ambling along, no cares.  I think he was going to the creek for a drink.

We were gone over the weekend, so don’t know a whole lot that went on.  We went up to Guilderland, NY, to help my Dad celebrate his 98th birthday.  Many relatives and friends gathered for this special occasion.  The weather was perfect and everyone had a great time.

Still time to get your donation in to help defray the cost of fireworks for this year’s Old Home Day display on Saturday evening.  If you’d like to help, send your donation to Brian McGuire, 197 Main St., Lopez, PA  18628.  Will be much appreciated.

This past Tuesday and Wednesday, St. Vladimir’s Church hosted its first annual summer Bible program for children and teens. Each day our students enjoyed a Bible lesson and discussion, this year focusing on prayer and the fruit of the Holy Spirit; fun songs; meaningful arts and crafts related to prayer; interactive games; and, of course, a delicious lunch to nourish the body after nourishing the soul. We thank everyone who participated and helped make this first summer program a great success! All are welcome to come to our next program!

Last Saturday, the Lopez community enjoyed the fun picnic and yard sale hosted by St. Vladimir’s Church. Friends, neighbors, and even some out-of-towners stopped by for a complimentary hamburger and hotdog right off the grill and had a great time visiting with one another. While kids had fun playing a variety of outdoor games, like badminton, croquet, ladder golf, and the classic corn hole, many adults took advantage of the great deals found at the yard sale in the church hall. We had a perfect day for food, fun, and fellowship. Hope you can join us next time!

Hardly seems possible that the Fourth of July Holiday is coming up.  Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable time.

Happy Birthday wishes to Mary Kravitz, Don Springer and Stacy Olsen, all on the 2nd of July; Tina Yarnall, 3rd; Brandan McCobin, 4th.  Hope you all have a nice day.

B’s gang sends Birthday wishes to Chris Darrow, 2nd; and Bill Stasiak, 6th.  Have a good day.

Happy Anniversary to Kurt and Linda (Popso) Schroeder who celebrate on the 3rd.  Hope it’s great.

Hint:  “You can get woody seeds, such as moonflower, passionflower, morning glory and gourds off to a healthier start by lightly rubbing them between a couple sheets of fine sandpaper and soaking them overnight in a solution of 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and 1 pint of warm water.  Next morning, remove the seeds, rinse them off and plant them.”

Guess that’s the news for now.  Enjoy your week; it’s going to be a good one.  Have news call me at 570-928-9238; mail me; see me; or e-mail me at news@lopezpa.com.  I’ll get it in for you.  Thanks for reading and I’ll be here next time.
